Dear Parents and Girls

“Make every day a Mandela Day”

Nelson Mandela’s 98th birthday would have

been on Monday 18th July, and the world

will spend the day remembering the legendary leader.

The message behind Mandela Day is simple – each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the

better. Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918

and died Dec. 5, 2013 PhO T O : R E U T E R S

If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build the country of our dreams. Mandela Day is a global call to action. Its objective is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and in so doing, to build a global movement for good. Nelson Mandela followed three rules throughout his life, which he did at great personal sacrifice:

1. Free yourself. 2. Free others. 3. Serve every day.

Mandela Day is dynamic and ever-changing: it belongs to everyone and can take place anywhere, at any time. We urge everyone to find inspiration for their contribution in the legacy of Nelson Mandela and to serve their fellow humans every day.

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that determines the significance of the life we lead." - on the 90th birthday of Walter Sisulu, May 18, 2002

It therefore seems fitting that we launched Community Hours SA at our assembly on Thursday to encourage our girls to get involved in community projects and make a difference in the lives of others. This organisation recommends numerous establishments that have been vetted by Community Hours SA where the girls can do community service. Once pupils have completed a project, they will log their hours with Community Hours SA, who will then provide the school with a verified log sheet per pupil. The girls did receive a letter earlier in the week with more detailed information. This year, we will start by registering the Grade 9s. HRS will also pay the membership fees per child.

Part of our ethos at Holy Rosary is to serve others, and what better way to do so, by making ‘every day a Mandela Day’.

We started our Mandela Day celebrations, by having our Grade 8 Dance Competition during our assembly. This competition is a Life Orientation and Physical Education requirement but we chose to showcase and celebrate the talents of our youth close to Mandela Day.

We are also honouring Mandela Day, by having a Civvies Day today. The proceeds

will go to PETS (Pet Empowerment in Townships). The Debutantes will be packing

food parcels at Sandton Convention Centre for Stop Hunger. In addition, on Monday 18th July, Holy Rosary will be having a Blood Donor Drive from 10am

until 2.30pm. Our target is 67 pints of blood, so we encourage as many girls, parents and extended families to please help us achieve our target. What a wonderful way to celebrate Mandela Day – by helping to save a life.

“Your playing small does not serve the world. Who are you not to be great?”

Nelson Mandela God bless and I wish you all a wonderful week ahead.

Sports Quote for the Week:

“You are all champions in your own way. That doesn’t mean you have to be number 1 or the best. Just do your best. If you aren’t first, then make those people ahead of you break records by pushing them with your personal best.”

CANCELLATION OF DEBS’ FAMILY QUIZ NIGHT

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have to cancel the Debs’ Family Quiz Night that was scheduled for the 21st July 2016. Apologies for any disappointment and

inconvenience caused.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION

On behalf of the beneficiaries, we would like to thank everyone concerned at Holy Rosary School for the most welcome and generous donation of R2 501.00 which was deposited directly into the CHOC account on the 1st June, 2016.

At CHOC we aim to provide the best possible support for children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders, and their families. Beginning as a parent support group in 1979, CHOC has developed into a nationwide organisation with a head office and six divisions, and 13 housing facilities. Our holistic approach includes psychosocial support in the hospital wards, from diagnosis onwards, and practical support ranging from accommodation to transport and recreation. We also support paediatric oncology staff, fund the upgrade of treatment facilities and ensure hospital wards are child-friendly. Our early warning signs programme promotes early detection.

Your generosity in supporting the work that CHOC does is sincerely appreciated. Kind regards,

Brenda Steyn Office Coordinator

Romans 8:18-19 states, " I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared to all the glory that is going to be revealed on us."

In our lives, we are always going to face many different obstacles. Some obstacles may seem bigger than others. Some days we may feel like giving up. But from the above verse, it is clear that God has so many great things in store for us ! He has a plan for each and every single one of us. God had a plan for each of us before we were even born into this beautiful world! The difficulty comes in trusting in God and carrying on.

This week, when you feel hopeless and possibly lost, stop for a second and speak to God. Speak to him in any way you wish, say an Our Father or even a Hail Mary, God is there to listen!

We need to keep our faith strong and trust in God! "And so let go my soul, and trust in him".

I hope everyone has a fantastic week!
