The Purification-de-la-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie church was declared a historic monument on March 23, 1978 – exactly 300 years after the Seigniory’s first church was built, to the west of Repentigny, on the seigniorial estate. A wooden church was first erected on the current site in 1703, followed by a stone church dating from 1723; today’s church stands atop the remains of the second church. This is the oldest church in the Montreal diocese. Its cemetery, like those of churches on the Île d'Orléans and only a few other churches in Quebec, adjoins the church. A fire on October 12, 1984, damaged the interior, but most of the decorations were saved. Despite the damage caused by the fire, and in view of its long history, the Repentigny church remains one of the finest in the Montreal diocese.

The church is located on the Chemin du Roy (King’s Road), alongside the St. Lawrence River. Visitors can also stroll along the waterside in the Île Lebel park, across the way, and enjoy three historical walking tours. Two local windmills are still standing; one of them, the Grenier mill, is open to the public.

Set in the heart of Old Terrebonne, the Île-des-Moulins offers visitors a fascinating historical and cultural experience.

This is the second-largest historical restoration site in Quebec.

Classified as a recognized historic site in 1973, Île-des-Moulins is a major 19th-century pre-industrial complex. It is still a living, breathing place, with five restored buildings.

Through historical, cultural and recreational interpretation activities, the Île-des-Moulins relates the history of the Terrebonne region from three points of view: the transition from the seigniorial regime to municipal government, the operation of water-driven mills and their pre-industrial development. There are two permanent exhibitions (Récits d'une seigneurie and les Moulins de Terrebonne, le pouvoir de l'eau) open during the summer and, by reservation, all year long.

Round off your visit with guided tours, interactive theatre, interpretation activities, boat tours, mini-train tours, a walking path, a storytelling evening and theme evenings.

The Moulin Grenier (Grenier Mill) was built in 1820 by François Grenier. It was classified as a historic building in 1976. The mill is open to the public, and guides offer interactive tours from June 24 (St-Jean Baptiste) to Thanksgiving. One of its main attractions is the excellent condition of its original mechanism. The mill operated until the 1880s, but was almost abandoned in the late 1970s, when it was struck by a car. The city of Repentigny took it over and began restoration work, completed in September 2005. Contact us for the detailed schedule.

Rosalie Cadron-Jetté (1794-1864), mother of 11 children and foundress of the Misericordia Sisters, was born in this house, built around 1790. Here you can learn about the daily life of Rosalie Cadron and Jean-Marie Jetté with their first six children, around 1820, shortly before they left Lavaltrie. The period furniture, the vegetable and flower gardens, the cross standing by the road, the baker’s oven plus the old well and its mechanism, will take you back 200 years. An exhibition in one of the rooms tells about the life and work of this exceptional woman who devoted her life to the poor, the miserable and unmarried mothers. She has now been proposed for sainthood.

You’ll enjoy the exhibition and workshops on the domestic arts: weaving, quilting, arrow sashes, braided and hooked rugs, knitting, embroidery, etc. Home-made bread, games and amusements from the past, handicrafts and regional products.
