Degree requirements 2010–2015
Bachelor’s degree programme in lighting and sound design
Core missionThe core mission of the degree programme is to produce graduates equipped to pursue careers as lighting and sound designers in arts and culture. Theatre, dance, opera, music, circus, media and other areas of the
performing arts and cultural industries will require ever more lighting and sound designers capable of artistic expression and teamwork. The degree programme expands students’ thinking about the aesthetics of lighting or sound, offers tools for implementation, analysis and argumentation, and supports student growth as designers interacting with the wider community. The degree programme also provides useful professional knowledge and skills for museum and exhibition work as well as event production.
Competencies and objectives
The objective is to train Bachelors of Arts in Theatre and Drama with a wide range of skills in lighting and sound design. Graduates from the Bachelor’s degree programme in lighting and sound design are familiar with the traditions, current practice and concepts of their field as well as with the artistic design process, can use the means and tools of expression in their field, and can contribute actively to the work of a multi-professional artistic design group. The programme supports students’ ability to produce artistic content and their willingness to carry out practical work.
The degree programme also develops students’ communication, documentation and information retrieval skills, and their ability to assess their own and others’ work as well as to give and receive feedback. The programme helps students develop their own work, learn the skills needed to organise work and to lead groups, and act ethically in their own work environment. Qualified lighting and sound designers are capable of adopting the latest technologies and work methods while maintaining a critical perspective. Lighting and sound designers can find employment in theatres, businesses or independent ensembles or can work as freelancers or independent designers, regardless of their form of expression.
Bachelor and Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama
The degree programme in lighting and sound design is two-tiered. The first degree is the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Drama; the second, the Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama. The general rule is that
undergraduate students are entitled to and plan to complete the Master’s degree. They must, however, complete the Bachelor’s degree before beginning their Master’s studies.
The Bachelor’s degree programme in lighting and sound design provides the basic knowledge and skills for lighting or sound design in the performing arts. The degree of Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Drama consists of 180 credits and can be completed in three years. The degree programme includes 23 credits of theoretical studies, 40 credits of basic studies, intermediate studies (83 credits in the specialist option in lighting design; 84 credits in the specialist option in sound design), elective studies (17 credits in the specialist option in lighting design; 16 credits in the specialist option in sound design) and 17 credits of general studies, including language and communication studies and the module in study and professional skills required in all Theatre Academy degree programmes. The final project in the Bachelor’s degree programme is a six-credit portfolio, examined by the professor of the specialist option.
The Master’s degree programme emphasises the importance of finding one’s own artistic voice. Master’s studies provide the knowledge and skills needed to analyse one’s own artistic identity, to work as a lighting or
2
sound designer in international productions, and to pursue postgraduate studies. The degree of Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama consists of 120 credits and can be completed in two years. The Master’s degree
programme includes 120 credits of advanced studies, of which the final project accounts for 30 credits. Advanced studies include 66 credits of compulsory studies (68 credits for students admitted directly to the Master’s degree programme), 20 credits of optional studies and 34 credits of independently completed studies (32 credits for students admitted directly to the Master’s degree programme).
Specialist options of lighting and sound design
During the first year of Bachelor’s studies, students in the degree programme of lighting and sound design explore both lighting and sound design. In the second year, they specialise in either lighting or sound design. Personal study plan
During the first year of studies, students in the degree programme of lighting and sound design must devise a personal study plan for their Bachelor’s studies. By the end of the third year or before beginning Master’s degree studies, students must devise a similar plan for their Master’s studies. The personal study plan (PSP, or HOPS in Finnish) describes the courses and artistic productions to be included in the student’s degree
programme as well as a timetable for the completion of studies. The personal study plan must be submitted to the lecturer of the specialist option (Bachelor’s students) or the professor of the specialist option (Master’s students) for approval. The plan is revised annually during a personal supervision session. According to the degree regulations of the Theatre Academy, students with no approved personal study plan cannot participate in teaching or complete studies.
Content of studies
First-year students explore various areas of the performing arts, the basics of narration, the analysis of space and time, the characteristics of lighting and sound as well as their use in the performing arts. The basic assumption is that new students may have no previous professional experience or qualifications. Particularly important during the second year of studies is learning the process of preparing a theatre
performance and, above all, working as a member of an artistic group. Students develop their teamwork skills and learn to use various instruments of lighting and sound design to convey their ideas and views to the rest of the artistic group.
The main content of the third year of studies is the Bachelor’s project, which comprises a portfolio and a production involving the realisation of an entire work together with students from other Theatre Academy departments.
During the fourth and fifth year of studies, Master’s students can make individual choices, experiment and specialise. Advanced studies include 20 credits of elective studies and 34 credits of other independently
completed studies, such as assistant work, practical training and individually chosen artistic projects. The aim of Master’s studies is to support students in finding their own artistic identity.
Structure of studies
Teaching in the degree programme in lighting and sound design is mainly offered in periods. Thursdays are reserved for theoretical studies, department meetings and joint teaching by Theatre Academy departments. The key tool for studies is a learning diary which each student must keep for all courses, productions and other study-related work. Studies will not be registered until the learning diary has been examined.
3
Bachelor’s studies (i.e., the first three years) are pursued according to a pre-determined timetable, whereas Master’s studies (i.e., the fourth and fifth year) proceed according to each student’s personal study plan and timetable. The academic year is divided into four periods.
Studies include several courses completed together with students of choreography, dramaturgy and directing at the Theatre Academy as well as with students of scenography at the Aalto University (formerly the University of Art and Design Helsinki).
The field of lighting and sound design is very international in character. Audiovisual expression enables the teaching of art and research that traverses language boundaries. Some of the studies in lighting and sound design are conducted in languages other than Finnish.
Many skill areas in lighting and sound design are learned through practical studies. Such areas include proficiency in the design methods and basic tools of light and sound, dramatic thinking, teamwork skills, the ability to analyse different components of a performance as well as the performance as a whole, and innovative and creative skills. For several courses, the method of completion is participation in teaching. In addition, the significance of supervised, independent work increases in teaching after the first year.
Grading of studies
Studies in the degree programme in lighting and sound design are assessed on a numerical scale (1 = passing, 2 = satisfactory, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent) or, in some cases, on a pass/fail basis.

SOUND DESIGNDuring the first year of studies, students explore both lighting and sound design. The student investigates various areas of the performing arts, the basics of narration, the expression of time and space, the properties of light and sound as well as their use in the performing arts. The basic assumption is that new students
embarking on studies in theatre arts may have no previous professional experience or qualifications.
The Aesthetics of sound modules, longer in duration and requiring independent study, begin during the first year with the Exercises in sound course. In later years of study, the modules become more focused on the individual needs of the students.
In the second year of study, students specialise in either lighting or sound design. The core content of the studies is learning the process of preparing a theatrical performance and, above all, working as a member of an artistic group. Students develop their teamwork skills and learn to use a variety of sound design tools to convey their ideas and vision to the rest of the group.
The central topic of the third year of studies is performing with sound.
The main content of the studies is the Bachelor’s project, which comprises a portfolio and a production involving the realisation of an entire work together with students from other Theatre Academy departments, and the Aesthetics of sound III module, during which students investigate and analyse in depth the various fields of sound expression.
The first three years of studies for the Bachelor’s degree are pursued according to a pre-determined timetable. The fourth and fifth years of studies for the Master’s degree proceed according to each student’s personal study plan and timetable.
During the fourth and fifth years of study, Master’s students of sound design can make individual choices, experiment and specialise. The Aesthetics of sound IV module focuses on providing an in-depth understanding of sound art and broadening the student’s own auditory thinking. The Aesthetics of sound V module comprises a research and implementation period defined by the student.

Degree requirements 2010–2015
Master’s degree programme in lighting and sound design
Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama, lighting or sound designThe two-year Master’s programme (120 cr) in theatre and drama is based on the previously completed Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Drama (180 cr) degree or equivalent studies, qualifications, skills or professional
experience.
The core mission of the degree programme is to produce professional lighting or sound designers capable of both artistic expression and teamwork in both the national and international field of performing arts. The degree programme deepens and widens the students’ thinking of lighting and sound aesthetics, provides tools for analysis and argumentation, and supports the growth of the student as an artist interacting with his or her surroundings.
After completing the Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama degree at the Department of Lighting and Sound Design at the Theatre Academy, the lighting or sound design graduate is an independent artist, capable of working as a creative and innovative member of an artistic team. The Master’s degree graduate can also further develop his or her chosen field both as a component of a variety of different types of art (theatre, dance, opera, circus, music, performance art, etc.) and as independent lighting or sound art. The lighting or sound designer is well-versed in the tradition of the relevant art and understands the necessary technologies and design processes. The graduate can utilise complex theatrical equipment to realise artistic goals, and can learn new technologies and work methods while retaining a critical approach. The lighting or sound designer can find employment in theatres or independent groups, or work as a freelancer or independent designer, regardless of the chosen form of expression.
Personal study plan
During the first year of studies, students in the degree programme of lighting and sound design must devise a personal study plan for their Master’s degree studies. The personal study plan (PSP, HOPS in Finnish) describes the courses and artistic productions to be included in the student’s degree programme as well as a timetable for the completion of studies. The relevant professor approves the personal study plan, which is monitored
annually during a personal supervision session. According to the degree regulations of the Theatre Academy, students with no approved personal study plan cannot participate in teaching or complete studies.
Content of studies
During Master’s degree studies, students can make individual choices, experiment and specialise more intensely than during Bachelor’s degree studies. The Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama degree comprises 120 credits, and can be completed in two years. The Master’s degree programme includes 120 credits of advanced studies, of which the final project contributes 30 credits. Advanced studies include 66 credits of compulsory studies (68 credits for students admitted directly to the Master’s degree programme), 20 credits of elective studies and 34 credits of independently completed studies (32 credits for students admitted direcly to the Master’s degree programme).
Independent studies include assistant work, practical training and individually chosen artistic projects. The Master’s degree programme provides the necessary qualifications for postgraduate studies.
26
Structure of studiesTeaching in the degree programme in lighting and sound design is mainly organised as intensive courses. The key tool for studies is the learning diary, which each student is expected to maintain for courses, productions and other study-related work. Studies will not be registered until the learning diary has been examined. Master’s degree studies proceed according to the student’s personal study plan and timetable. The academic year is divided into four periods.
Studies include several courses completed together with students of choreography, dramaturgy and directing at the Theatre Academy as well as with students of scenography at the Aalto University of Art and Design
(formerly the University of Art and Design Helsinki). The field of lighting and sound design is very international in character. Audiovisual expression enables the creation of art and research that traverses language
boundaries. Some of the studies in lighting and sound design are conducted in languages other than Finnish. Many skill areas in lighting and sound design are learned through practical studies. Such areas include
proficiency in the design methods and basic tools of light and sound, dramatic thinking, teamwork skills, the ability to analyse different components of a performance as well as the performance as a whole, and innovative and creative skills. For several courses, the method of completion is participation in teaching.
Grading of studies
Studies in the degree programme in light and sound design are assessed on a numerical scale (1 = passing, 2 = satisfactory, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent) or, in some cases, on a pass/fail basis.
