Welcome to

commencement

The key that you are wearing on your tassel today represents the many doors that your education at Lynn will open for you.

During your time here, you were among the first college students in the nation to experience boundless classrooms with iPad-powered learning. You gained a global mindset with peers from 100 countries. And for many of you, that global experience extended well beyond campus as you studied in programs around the world. Some of you earned national championship trophies. Some of you graduated at warp speed through Lynn's accelerated degree programs. Some of you have already connected with your future employers through the career center.

And all of you are now part of a proud tradition of Lynn University graduates who leave here with the intellectual flexibility to achieve your potential and build a better world. Wear your tassel key proudly, graduate. We hope this memento will help you, our newest alumni, remember your home, your friends and your life-affirming experiences at Lynn University.

Congratulations, class of 2018.

Ron D. Cordes

After building AssetMark Investment Services into a leading firm with some $30 billion of assets under management, Ron Cordes and his partners sold the company to Genworth Financial for $230 million in 2006. That year, with $10 million from the proceeds, Cordes and wife Marty created the family foundation they'd always dreamed of. Daughter Stephanie joined them in 2014.

Their portfolio supports social entrepreneurs, backing microfinance and other poverty alleviation initiatives as well as efforts that empower women and girls in developing nations.

"I went from trying to build the best business in the world to building the best businesses for the world," Cordes told Forbes.

As a financial manager, Cordes found he could get solid returns and make a greater impact than with a traditional philanthropic fund by also making impact investments in social causes.

"As an entrepreneur, I liked the idea that I could help build, and invest in, companies that solved problems," he has said. The foundation now has investments in over 50 countries, including Haiti, Nicaragua, Uganda, Rwanda and India. Cordes said he learned that humility, empathy and listening are critical when supporting communities in cultivating effective solutions.

In 2011, Cordes helped create the donor-advised fund platform lmpactAssets, which has $350 million of assets. His foundation owns a significant interest in the $400 million microfinance-based fund manager MicroVest. He is on their boards as well as those of Fair Trade USA and Lynn University's Social Impact Lab.

The lab's director, Jerry Hildebrand, has been a member of the Cordes Foundation's board since its beginning, and for the past decade the foundation has worked closely with Hildebrand on several university-based initiatives.

"I am passionate about helping students find their purpose in the world," said Cordes. "We just committed to help fund the summer Ambassador Corps program at the Social Impact Lab, and we're looking for other ways to support the lab's work."

A resident of New York City, Cordes holds a B.S. in business administration and management from the University of California, Berkeley, and co-authored

The Art of Investing and Portfolio Management. He was an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005.

Michael G. Grondin completed his requirements for a Master of Business

Administration degree, with a specialization in finance valuation and investment management, in December 2017. Today, he proudly marches

with and addresses his fellow members of the class of 2018.

Soon after starting his master's program in fall 2016, he took a job at Statewide Windows and Doors, Incorporated. He has since risen quickly

at the fast-growing startup-from permit expediter to permit coordinator,

then a department shift to finance manager. Recently he was promoted to director of operations, where he manages an array of organizational

functions, including sales, marketing. finance, permitting, inspections and general administrative work.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, Grondin was 3 when his family moved to

Boynton Beach, Florida. Though a lifelong fan of Florida's sun and beaches, Grondin, 29, travels as often as he can. A sojourn to Thailand and Japan in

2016 is a highlight he'd like to reprise, with the addition of China. Always strong in mathematics, Grondin first became fascinated by finance at Palm Beach State College, where he earned his A.A. degree

and bachelor's degree in business administration at the Lake Worth campus. Already working full time, Grondin knew he wanted to stay local for graduate studies. He says he chose Lynn for its more intimate class sizes and unique program offerings.

Grondin excelled, earning straight l\s before receiving his degree last

December with a 4.0 grade-point average.

Business professors like Dr. Ralph Norcia and Dr. Jose Lopez made a

big impact, as did working on team projects with a variety of international classmates. "I got to experience how people from different cultures learn,"

said Grondin, who often recommends Lynn to his colleagues and friends.

'The classroom and teaching atmosphere was just great."

He insists his degree has aided his career advancement and that the

tools he gained at Lynn in a variety of business disciplines are enabling him "to strategically solve complex problems in real-life situations at work."

Ultimately, Grondin plans to pursue a Ph.D. in his field and teach at the

college level, maybe even back at Lynn. "I love learning," he said, "and

Traditions

2018 class gift

Every year, graduating students leave their legacy at Lynn

by donating to the class gift. The class of 2018 joins this

proud tradition and honors those who have supported them by contributing to the Alumni Pay It Forward Endowed Scholarship.

This scholarship is awarded to deserving incoming freshmen in need of financial assistance so they can one day fulfill their

potential. The university is grateful to the class of 2018 for "paying

it forward" and to the Student Philanthropy Team for fostering philanthropy among students and encouraging graduating

students to uphold the class gift tradition.

Academic

regalia

The academic robes and hoods worn by the faculty and

students lend color to the pageantry of commencement.

This regalia dates back to the medieval ages, when it served

a functional as well as an ornamental role, separating the learned men from other groups and offering warmth and protection. In America in the late 19th century, representatives of colleges and universities held a conference to bring order and system

to the custom of academic dress. Since then, there have been

periodic conferences to revise or reconfirm existing practices.

Undergraduates wear the black robes with the white collars.

Holders of the master's degree wear hoods, which are lined with the colors of the college conferring the degree and trimmed with the color representing the subject in which the degree was

earned. The doctoral robe is adorned with velvet and is also

worn with the hood suitably ornamented.

Holders of degrees from foreign universities or religious orders wear the entire academic costume as decreed by the conferring institution.

The gonfalons

The gonfalons, a tradition that originated in the civic rituals of 12th century Italy, are a part of Lynn University's academic

ceremonial protocol.

Lynn University designed the gonfalons in accordance with the standards established for all colleges and universities, and each bears the college's unique symbolic color. The university seal is presented on each gonfalon to embody the common bonds that unite faculty and students as members of one academic community.

The vice president for academic affairs, in consultation with the

academic deans, selects the faculty members honored to serve

as gonfalon bearers.

Special awards

The Dean's Award for Excellence in Graduate Education

Each college and the Conservatory of Music give this award to the graduate who displays outstanding potential for scholarship and

leadership in his or her respective field.

The ceremon

i

al academic mace

The academic mace dates back to the 14th century, when royalty,

magistrates, and church or university officials carried maces in official

processions. The design of the ceremonial academic mace incorporates

elements from royal scepters and battle maces, representing both leadership and strength.

During the commencement ceremony, the mace indicates the authority

of the university president to award degrees. The chief marshal carries

the mace.

The Lynn University mace consists of a three-foot-tall wood scepter

with a bronze cast of the Lynn University seal on the top. It was

designed in 2002 by Graphic Design Professor Emeritus Ernest

Ranspach, who presented it to then-Lynn University President

Donald E. Ross in honor of 30 years of leadership and service.

The Evening Undergraduate D

vision Award

Lynn University presents this award to the degree candidate who has maintained the highest grade-point average. Students having

transfer hours from other institutions are eligible for the award as
