The architects of La Salle are trained to assume the responsibility of designing and building architecture linked to the world of the profession. The subjects and working methods are defined based on the search for an architect that is educationally balanced, a lover of the profession, service-minded and with the ability to respond to the needs of the time using the most advanced knowledge and technologies. La Salle promotes a personalized student-teacher relationship that helps the student to approach the professional reality; thus, projects are developed from the beginning stages through execution.

This training in architecture allows the student to contribute to the improvement of living spaces. It is based both on the development and construction of new projects as well as on the conservation of the current physical reality of the environment.

Instructor profile: renowned architects and teachers bring the world of architecture to the student.

Beginning in September 2013, students may pursue the degree in Architecture in English.

for professional and social recognition of the unique characteristics of La Salle-trained architects based on the specific and differentiating teaching methods of our school. The perfection of the works of La Salle-trained architects is the consequence of an architect accustomed to the complete development of projects. Students work on the different aspects affecting determination of architectural form: composition, construction, structure, planning, adaptation to the environment, sustainability, economics, etc.

the core curriculum with Building engineering. The Undergraduate degree in Building Engineering is the first of its kind in Catalonia and one of the first in Spain to have been evaluated favorably in accordance with the new European Higher Education Area (Bologna). At La Salle, Architects and Building Engineers study the first course together and work as a team; likewise, throughout the rest of their studies, Architects and Building Engineers continue to work together just as they will in their professional careers.

the non-departmental faculty of Architecture La Salle, the only one of its kind in the country, allows students to take the multidisciplinary “Project Development Workshop”. In this course we carry out Executive Projects with teachers from all subject areas. This workshop reflects the interrelation of degrees, characteristic of our school. It consists of the development of the final project of the prior year throughout the following year, to create a finished project of professional-level quality. In this way the Final Project of the Degree is presented as the natural development of the culminating exercise of the final year.

the application of new technologies. The La Salle School of Architecture was created out of the School of Engineering, with its 100 years of history and contacts with technologies companies. This technological aspect is key. The architect should be able to dominate technologies and apply them to design, representation and calculations. For this reason, Architecture studies incorporate technological tools and innovation in order to adapt to the current needs of society and integrate technology as a differentiating factor in their work.

engineering

La Salle’s degree in Building

Engineering is the first of its kind in Catalonia and one of the first in Spain to be evaluated favorably in accordance with the new European Higher Education Area (Bologna). This degree replaces the degree in Technical Architecture in all universities. Training is based on learning about construction and management of sites and projects.

It prepares students to work in all building processes, from the study of its viability and promotion to execution and subsequent service life. The curriculum stresses comprehensive management of the building process, in which graduates of the Building Engineering program must be the protagonists. Students can study the first course in English, Spanish or Catalan.

Why study

Building

architecture

“I am very grateful to La Salle for the dedication and expertise I have acquired from their Architecture program. It has been some years of a lot of effort and sacrifice to become an architect. Before starting architecture I graduated from Industrial engineering, specializing in building and structures, and I worked for two years in a technical control organism. I saw that I liked architecture and that it could be complementary to my studies, so I decided to try it. I never would have thought that I could absorb so much. Nevertheless, the effort has paid off. During these five years I have

“The quality of the

experience has been

experienced a well-defined educational system with a very clear objective: extract the best qualities from each student into order to make good architects. In order to pass a subject, students must prove that they have acquired all knowledge from prior subjects. This is only achieved by working hard and practicing day after day. Additionally, in order to help students find their first job, La Salle has a Job Bank that includes many architectural firms. This is highly appreciated because most students find work by the time they finish their degree.”

For example, if at the beginning I thought that the volume and quality of work was too demanding, after a time, I was able to take on and even surpass what was expected of me until the point that I acquired skills I never could have imagined possible. The curriculum and teaching staff guarantee quality, but the best thing I took from this university is the personal relationship with teachers. I know I can count on them whenever I need them for any professional consultation.

In short, if I was motivated in the beginning by the human factor, my expectations have been more than overcome. I have learned to value the profession and my eyes have been opened to the wide range of career options. “

“I decided to study at La Salle because they don’t treat you like a number. This I valued positively, given that I had to invest the majority of my time to my studies, for a long period of years. I am currently working on the Final Project for the Building Engineering degree and I can give an opinion of what I value as negative and positive aspects of the program.

Everything that seemed negative at the beginning, in the end, has provided me many benefits and satisfactions.

practice the profession.

La Salle has maintained an ongoing commitment to pedagogical

innovation. An example of this commitment is the Guide to the assessment of skills in the field of Engineering and Architecture, published in 2009 by the Agency for the Quality of the Catalan University System (AQU), coordinated by La Salle. This guide describes a methodology to be applied to architecture studies, a model of student-centered learning proposed by the European Higher Education Area and its educational concepts: skills, competencies, learning outcomes, etc.

Since it’s founding, the School of Architecture La Salle has developed a learner-centered methodology that is apparent in its innovative teaching methods. Here are some of them:

Methodology

SDr representation Systems

The Representation Systems course is an open and participative space that relates diverse subjects based on the integration of information and communication technologies: the theory of art and architecture, aesthetics and composition, graphic design and visual communication, visual studies and representation. The interrelation among diverse disciplines creates a place for knowledge that transcends the limits of the individual. The collaborative learning environment of SDR: NETWORKING (designed and specially developed by

the search group ARC) is an essential component of this educational model. The innovative character of the teaching

methodology developed around the SDR course has been recognized with the distinction Vicens Vives, granted in 2010 by the Generalitat de Cataluña for its use of information and communication technology in order to surpass the borders between disciplines and subjects in higher education. Projects Workshop

This workshop trains architects to be capable of developing a project from its conception to conclusion and

therefore, to be prepared to enter and improve society.

ARC is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to the design, development and application of information and communication technologies (IT) in aspects of architecture: teaching, projects and research. The group was founded in 1999 and in 2009, it was officially recognized as a research group by AGAUR (Generalitat de Catalunya).

(12)

conferences

Conferences are scheduled in which architects,

photographers and personalities in culture at large express their thoughts. The inaugural class of the academic year 2010-2011 was in charge of internationally renowned architect, Rafael Moneo (Pritzker Architecture Prize 1996). At this conference, the architect gave a summary of his professional history and presented the book “Rafael Moneo. Notes on 21 works. “

At the La Salle School of Architecture we propose the question: what role should the university play in the international

education of its students. In this regard, we believe that besides strictly academic training, students must be offered a broad cultural view of the world to awaken in them new concerns. We want our school to be a living institution that enriches the global education of our students through:

cultural

activities

days

During Architecture Days, different lecturers participate to delve deeper into a current theme. The school has always attempted to be a center of debate and analysis of architectural proposals submitted to cities; for this reason, in 2010 with the collaboration of the Barcelona City Council, different solutions to reforming Barcelona’s Avenida Diagonal were presented, discussed and subjected to debate.

travelling eXhiBitions

The school welcomes annually several exhibitions with the collaboration of institutions like Colegio de Arquitectos de Cataluña, el Colegio de Aparejadores Técnicos de Cataluña, la Fundación Caja de Arquitectos and other schools of architecture both in Spain and abroad.

student activities eXpositions

Exhibitions held within the school itself, so that students are aware of the activities taking place in other courses and can share their experiences.

patio of flowers

The school participates annually in the exhibition “Tiempo de Flores” (Flower Time), organized annually by Gerona City Council, to create a real proposal for one of the patios of the city. An internal competition is held in which teams of students make proposals. Each proposal is then submitted to a vote and the winner gets to develop their idea. In this way, students participate in a real project and work together as a team.

puBlications

Publications of books by the school’s teachers as well as of work carried out by our students.

trips

Trips are organized to different countries so that students have to opportunity to value architecture “in situ”, attending workshops with other universities or visiting developing projects in places like New York, Los Angeles, Madrid, Lyon, Oslo, etc.

“Studying these years at La Salle has taught me values that have helped me grow both professionally and as a person. As a professional, and thanks to the knowledge acquired at university, I have participated actively in public and private projects, always offering an overall “La Salle brand” quality, a brand that has helped me to position myself in my career. Currently, I am part of ACXT Architects: a multinational company for which I lead and manage various teams while trying to apply what La Salle has taught me: to communicate, convey, delegate, enhance skills and improve attitudes and, of course, to “share” experiences and knowledge. “

“From my studies at La Salle, I especially appreciate the opportunity to have direct communication with the teachers, as well as the ability to deepen my knowledge of constructive and material reality in order to be able to interpret it in the act of project planning. Currently, I share a professional studio with Bertha Barrio, together with whom I have recently been awarded the 1st Prize at the European 10 in Teruel. “

At La Salle, we encourage the development of social skills and management through non-academic projects and activities that make up a valuable educational program and contribute to group relationships in an atmosphere outside the classroom. The campus is a dynamic and living environment shared by architecture, building engineering and business management students. Students participate together in cultural activities, sports, and other leisure activities and find support for their initiatives through student associations and through the services and activities offered by La Salle, like the business Incubator, the Job Bank, fitness center, clubs, festivals of La Salle, etc.

Through the Job Bank, during their studies, students access paid internships within companies and receive support creating their résumés, career advice, etc. More than sixty percent of students are hired on a permanent basis by the company for which they worked as interns. Upon completion of studies, the Job Banks provides career advice and facilitates job offers that arrive directly to La Salle students.
