2015 PROGRAMME
July 15
th, 2015
.
We look at views of some recent shows, including perhaps our best ever SAROC Fair, and the Victorian Country Challenge,( held this year at Cobden), an association of 11 orchid clubs in Western Victoria which take turns to stage a competitive show each year in turn in July. They have some marvellous orchids rarely seen in SA as their climate is cooler, and 20-30 from SA are regular and welcome visitors each year.
BIRTHDAYS for July 2015

PRESIDENT’S REPORT.
.
The busiest and perhaps the most rewarding time of the year is at hand for orchid growers, with many of our plants preparing to bloom, and the prospect of seeing many new orchids at the numerous shows which are presented by orchid clubs. We urge members to not only involve yourself with our shows, but get around to visit other Clubs’ shows, too.
We have been invited by the Cymbidium Club to stage a non competitive display of orchids (all genera) attheir National Cymbidium Show at Noarlunga Leisure Centre, David Witton Drive, Noarlunga Centre on 22nd and 23rd August. Setup on Friday 21st Aug. More details when our official invitation arrives. This will be a great show of top class cymbidiums, both local and interstate, and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to display and promote the diversity of all the other sorts of orchids which can be grown here. Bookings for the Sept. 24th cabaret at Westport Primary School will be taken this meeting. $25 per head. Only 30 seats are available and payment should be made when you book. If you want to go but can’t get to this month’s meeting, you should ring treasurer Garry Simcock on Tel 8390 2212 to reserve a seat.
Trevor Jacob President.
LAST MEETING
We are indebted to Steve Howard, who came along at short notice to deliver a very interesting and informative talk about how Steve grows his Australian native orchids.
Practical advice from a successful local grower is very valuable to allow us to consider modifying our own cultural practices for better results, and Steve delivered a number of hints about how he has achieved better results as his expertise has developed. Thank you for a most interesting, entertaining and helpful talk, Steve..
THIS MEETING
th
and interstate , present their plants for display, with emphasis on our SAROC Fair, and with some information about how the judges arrive at their conclusions. The orchids in the displays are judged under the AOC Rules, so we all have some idea about how the individual plants are selected, but display judging is different. This talk may give you some ideas for improving your own displays at our Mid-year show, when we all have the opportunity to mount our own individual exhibits. Included, too, are some views of the recent Victorian Country Challenge, which a number of our members attend regularly. This year’s show was at Cobden, in South-western Victoria.
SOCIAL OUTINGS.
Alan Davies has arranged 3 tables of 10 at the Ethelton Players Cabaret at Westport Primary School (UBD Ref. L13, Map 91) at 53 West St Semaphore Park’
The date is Thursday 24th Sept. at 6.45 for 7pm start. The comedy acts are interspersed with a 3 course home style meal and the cost is $25 per head. Bar facilities are available.
Bookings with paymentwill be taken by our treasurer, Garry Simcock this meeting.
This proved a really enjoyable evening out last year, and most who attended then have indicated they’d like to come along again this time.
Seats are strictly limited, so make your plans early.
SUPPER ROSTER
.
Last month, Barbara Semmens was assisted by Rod McRedmond in passing out the tea and coffee at the end of the meeting. Just shows that boys can be good at more than one job, like flying for the Flying Doctor Service, as well as not spilling the tea. You’ve trained him well, Judy. Thank you, Barbara and Rod.
This month, Pauline and Garry Simcock have offered to assist. Thank you!

MIDYEAR SHOW.
Last year proved the benefit of additional classes for each judging Division, dividing the Oncidiinae class into three, Oncidium hybrids, Oncidiinae hybrids, (intergenerics) and Oncidiinae species. The same too, with the Zygopetalinae class to now have Zygopetalum hybrids, Zygopetalinae hybrids, and Zygopetalinae species separately. These classes will feature again this year in all our three shows.

SALES TABLE. We hope we have many orchids (hopefully in bloom) available for sale, but like last year, other items can be put up for sale, too, including biscuits, cakes etc. These items must have the list of ingredients included on the package...Other types of plants are welcomed for sale, too.
Don’t forget to get your sales sheet lists from our treasurer, Garry Simcock this meeting (preferably), or before you place your goodies on the Sales Table. The Society retains 20% of the price you put on your items.
Doors will be open at 7.30 am on Saturday to set up the show, and judging is hoped to commence by 10am. Show opens at 12noon for the public, but arrangements have been made for the sales area to be available before then. Sunday hours will be 10am to 4 pm.
Assistance with manning the kitchen/refreshments will be needed during the weekend, and any donations of scones or
cream will be gratefully accepted. A roster will circulated this meeting.
GOLD, GOLD, GOLD.
To commemorate the inaugural meeting of our Society in October 1965 at the TPI Hall, South Tce. Adelaide, when attendees decided to form a new suburban orchid Society, the Best Gold orchid, selected from the MidYear., Winter, and Spring Shows will receive a special prize at our 50th anniversary meeting in October.
Selection will be made by the judging panel, and will be selected on the “best Gold coloured orchid” – shape is inconsequential, as colour is the main criterion. The prize will be presented at the October meeting.
Last month’s FLOWER DISPLAY.
We hoped to have the promised new lighting in operation last month, but it’s still in the pipeline. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for this meeting. Garry Simcock has some supplementary lighting available if it is required.
Sarka Laznicka showed her cym Katydid again last month, this time with two lovely long pendant spikes in bright green.. Flowers can last a long time during the cooler months. Ben Knobben’s Cym Jessie Blakiston x Lunar Blaze has been a very successful cross for him, flowering two very fine seedlings. 5 spikes of mid pink blooms in a 20cm pot caught the eye of members and judges alike
CymJessie Blakiston x Lunar Blaze `Prolific’. Jessie Blakiston has proven to be a very good parent of smaller sized blooms.
Cym Peggy Foo is producing wide petalled progeny, just like the parent plant, and Ben must be very pleased with this result as well..
CymPeggy Foo x Tom Thumb.
It was the Laeliinae, however , which had the most impact , with this beautifully grown plant of Blc George King `Serendipity’ perhaps the best example of this lovely salmon coloured orchid I’ve seen, for its owners M & M Page in First Div.
BlcGeorge King `Serendipity’
John Seidel brought along the speciesC. coccinea,a fine cultural effort for this not easily grown orchid.
`It was the cover flower which really caught my eye. The breeders have produced many miniature cattleyas with outstanding
