~~ February 21, 2021 ~ First Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners:

I hope that Lent has gotten

off to a good start for everyone. We

come to this First Sunday of Lent

having lived through a year that was unimaginable on

the First Sunday of Lent last year. This pandemic

brought so much pain, and suffering, and loss to so

many. We realize how much we are not in control.

Our lives can change in an instant. The only thing

that does not change is God and His love for us. All

that is going on in our world, in our country, and in

our own lives is calling us to turn to God with all our

heart and to place all our trust in Him. Lent is calling

us to do the same.

We hear in our first reading today of the story

of Noah and the Ark, that God was so displeased with

the evil that corrupted the heart of man and woman

that He sent the waters of the flood as a cleansing and

purifying remedy. After the destruction caused by the

flood, God gave humanity another chance, a new

beginning. He made a covenant with Noah, that never

again would the waters of a flood devastate the earth

because of man’s sin. The sign of this covenant was

the rainbow, a beautiful arch in the sky which

appeared to join Heaven and Earth together.

All this points toward the New and Eternal

Covenant where Heaven and Earth is truly joined

together - God and man - in the Person of our Lord

Jesus Christ. This New and Eternal Covenant was

sealed on the Cross with the blood of Christ as He

destroyed the power of sin and death, a victory that is

extended to us by our Baptism. The Death and

Resurrection of Jesus has transformed the destructive

waters of the flood into the cleansing and life-giving

waters of Baptism which washes away sin and brings

new life to the sinner.

God will always give us another chance

when we approach Him with a sincere and contrite

heart, especially in the Sacrament of Penance. We all

know that our relationship with God is not what it

should be, that we still have a long way to go to being

the person God wants us to be. We are given this

blessed time of Lent to begin again, to turn back to

God with all our heart.

The whole point of Lent is to become holier,

to become more like Jesus. This is the best thing we

can do not only for ourselves, but for our children, for

our families, for our country, and for our world. May

this Holy Season of Lent be a moment of Grace for all

of us. May God bless us all.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Matthew J. Furey

Lenten Fast & Abstinence

During this season of Lent, the Church urges the faithful to reflect a spirit of penance in their daily lives through preforming acts of Fast & Abstinence and intensifying our prayer and acts of charity. Good Friday is a day of Fast and Abstinence FASTING: Requires that only one full meal a day be taken. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength, but these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from the 18th to the 59th birthday. ABSTINENCE: Forbids the eating of meat. Abstinence obliges from the 14th birthday and continues to oblige throughout life.

Every Friday of Lent is a day of Abstinence.

Bereavement Group A Journey from Grief to Healing

If there is anything that this past year has made clear, it is the fact that our world is in need of missionary disciples. This discipleship begins with a Catholic education and is nurtured through a lifetime of formation and conversion. Our Catholic schools, as well as the Adult Faith Formation and Catechetical offices of the Archdiocese of New York, are committed to this work of evangelization and Christ-centered education. Visit www.cardinalsappeal.org to learn more or make a gift!

To date our parish has received $26,550.00 in pledges/gifts toward our goal of 171,000.00 for the 2021 Cardinal’s Appeal, from 97 families. For this Appeal to be truly successful, we need the support from all of our families. The Appeal is a vital source of funding for the programs & ministries that sustain the parishes across our

Archdiocese. Thank you for your kind support.

The RCIA is the process by which our Parish Community assists men and women to respond to God’s call, to become fully initiated into the Church through the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Communion Those interested should contact the parish office for details @ 845-473-4222. Or just come on Wednesday, at 7:00pm to the church.
