Traceability
Material and process traceability are maintained for each Heavy Weight Drill Pipe component. For the tool joints, the mill material certifications are confirmed by incoming testing and each tool joint blank is given a numbered heat code. This code is traceable through the manufacturing process. The heavy weight drill pipe tube is given a perma-nent identification number.
Cold Rolling
Drill pipe undergoes repeated, severe tensile stresses during a drilling operation. These cyclic stresses are particularly focused on the thread roots and can cause pipe failure. Grant Prideco helps alleviate this problem by compressing (cold rolling) the thread roots on every piece of heavy weight drill pipe. Because the threads are in a compressed state to begin with, the endurance limit to bending forces is increased, thereby decreasing fatigue.
Mechanical properties for tool joint materials are tabulated on page 18 of this catalog.

rant Prideco Heavy Weight Drill Pipe is manufactured bywelding extra-long tool joints to heavy wall tubes.
Standard heavy weight tool joints are manufactured from AISI 4142H-4145H modified drill collar material.
The heavy weight pipe body is manufactured from AISI 1340
material. Extra-long tool joints are designed to provide increased space for connection rework.

hick-walled pipe, called HeavyWeight Drill Pipe (HWDP), was developed to provided a gradual transition from the heavy drill collars to the relatively lightweight drill pipe. This inter-mediate-weight pipe has a wall thickness of approximately 1”, and helps prevent stress concentration at the top of the drill collar. It also allows you to drill at higher rpms, reducing torque and differential pressure sticking.
HWDP is intended primarily for directional drilling. Because it bends easily, it simplifies directional control and minimizes connection fatigue problems common to high-angle or horizontal drilling. The reduced number of pipe failures and increased drill-stem ser-vice also make HWDP appropriate for some straight-hole applications. Various combinations of HWDP, drill collars, and standard drill string can be created to meet the challenge of severe drilling conditions. 24” 26” 24” tool Joint od d B Upset diameter nominal Size a c Wear Section Upset diameter B elevator Upset diameter 180 180 31’

rant Prideco developed Tri-Spiral™Heavy Weight Drill Pipe for applications where standard heavy weight drill pipe can fail–extended reach or horizontal drilling. The severe bending stresses and hole-wall con-tact are reduced by three spiral upsets that are equally spaced between tool joints. The upset design helps reduce buckling and differential sticking, as well as torque and drag. Spiraling the upsets also helps move the cuttings off the low side of the hole for better hole cleaning. Tri-Spiral™ Heavy Weight Drill Pipe features more weight per joint and better hole cleaning characteristics than standard heavy weight drill pipe, providing optimum performance in severe drilling conditions.

piral-WateTM drill pipe, spiraled heavy-walldrill pipe, is designed to handle maximum stress to save time and reduce drilling costs-especially in tough drilling environments.
Intermediate drill string members are constantly subjected to some of the most severe tasks in drill-ing today. The critical transition zone between stiff, heavy drill collars (under compression) and the light, more flexible drill pipe (in tension) can be too much for conventional heavy-wall drill pipe to han-dle.
Spiral-WateTM drill pipe’s unique patented spiral
design reduces differential sticking problems, mini-mizes wear and improves circulation. Precision tool joint alignment cuts down on excessive tool joint wear for longer service life and reduced fatigue.

environments. XD™-90 HWDP is available in both Standard and Spiral HWDP.
XD™-90 HWDP provides higher strength and a tempered martensite microstructure for enhanced resistance to crack initiation and crack propagation compared to conventional HWDP. XD™-90 HWDP incorporates a proprie-tary chemistry and a rigidly controlled quench and temper heat treatment process. XD™-90 HWDP has a mini-mum yield strength of 90,000 psi compared to standard welded HWDP with a minimini-mum yield strength of 55,000 psi. With a NACE threshold stress of 85% of yield strength, XD-90™ HWDP is resistant to sulfide stress cracking. Its high fracture toughness makes XD™-90 HWDP ideal for the most demanding drilling conditions, including applications with high bending loads and corrosive environments.

™HW-95
™Heavy Weight drill Pipe
HW-95™ high strength heavy weight drill pipe grade is a proprietary grade offered by Grant Prideco for target applications requiring the use of HWDP high in the hole where elevated tensile and torsional loading is expected. HW-95™ HWDP features a high yield strength (95 ksi minimum), a 73% increase in yield strength over standard HWDP products, resulting in superior tensile and torsional strength properties. HW-95™ HWDP was specifically designed such that ten-sile and torsional capacities are equal to or greater than nearly all types of standard API drill pipes tubes. As a result of the increased strength, HW-95™ HWDP is a perfect fit for applications such as short radius, horizontal, and extended reach drilling (ERD) projects where use of HWDP above the kick-off point is required for applying bit weight and additional buckling stability.
