President’s Message
July 2021
Greetings, EWI of San Antonio:
I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the more mild than usual temperatures here in Texas. I find it hard to believe that 2021 is more than halfway gone. Where does the time go?
July is our annual “Non-Meeting” month and this will take place this Thursday, the 15th. We hope you plan to do something else that brings you happiness on our meeting night. Please consider paying the meeting fee even though we are not meeting in person. The fees collected go toward LCAM scholarships we award to two representatives each year. Speaking of LCAM scholarships, congratulations to Patty Moreno, representing Joeris General Contractors and Amanda Avendano, representing Enterprise Holdings. Amanda and Patty will both be attending LCAM in September. We are proud they will be representing EWI of San Antonio, along with several other representatives of our Chapter.
We were so thrilled to see so many in attendance at the Petroleum Club in June. That night felt like “old times” and it was wonderful to feel so normal. We were pleased to honor Joyce Carothers, sustaining member, with a Lifetime Membership status. Joyce joined EWI of San Antonio in 1981 and served as Chapter President in 1986. On a personal level, I learned so much from Joyce about the foundation of EWI and I will be grateful for the knowledge she shared with me for the rest of my life.
Please continue to keep our sister Patty Russett, representing San Antonio Area Foundation, in your thoughts and prayers as she continues to heal from chemo treatments and prepares for surgery. We are looking forward to Patty returning to us stronger and healthier than ever after she completes this journey.
The relationships we build in EWI are so special. We are fortunate to have one another. Our Chapter is gaining momentum and getting stronger. This all happens because of you and your commitment to the pillars of EWI.
With love and gratitude,
Lori Reed

Can you believe we’re in the middle of the summer? We’ve already had a month of pool days, vaca on plans, and lazy, later evenings. Before you know it, the school year and cooler weather will be back upon us. And that’s the truth with most of life. It rushes past us. Ask anyone who is over 40 years old and they will tell you, the older you get the shorter the years become. Yet while me slips away from us, it’s important to not let our health slip away with it.
There’s no doubt life operates at a much faster pace than ever before. Perhaps much of that is technology driven. But we speed through the days going from one ac vity or event to the next. Days rush into weeks and weeks turn into months. Before we know it, years have gone by. And while we’ve been rushing around just “ge ng by”, it’s easy to let our self care slip. Our inten ons are good. We’ll start that exercise rou ne tomorrow or begin ea ng healthier next week. But soon enough, tomorrow becomes yesterday. Plus, think about this for a moment. Do we even have true “health care” in our country? It’s much more sick care oriented and offers treatment a er the fact, a er we’ve eaten poorly for years or skipped the exercise because there wasn’t me. Self care is the true health care because it focuses on preventa ve measures we take to reach our senior years with the best possible quality of life.
So what’s self care? It centers around 4 core areas of good preventa ve health prac ces. Those areas include sleep, hydra on, physical ac vity, and good nutri on. If you’re already thinking you don’t have
me to devote to these things or you simply can’t get a good night’s sleep because there’s too much to do, I’m going to cau on you. Find a way now. Otherwise it’s more likely you’ll be looking at heath dependence versus independence in older age.
We all know a good night’s rest is considered 7‐9 hours of sleep nightly. But what we know and what we do are more o en two different things. Yet understanding why it’s so important can be a mo va ng factor. Here are just a few of the many benefits to proper rest. It keeps your heart healthy.
It may reduce the risk of cancer by regula ng your melatonin levels. It reduces your stress and inflamma on, improves your memory, and reduces your risk of depression. Not to men on, our bodies repair and heal when we are at rest. So in essence, adequate sleep is an ‐aging.
Hydra on is easy to overlook. The rule of thumb to remember is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Drinking caffeinated beverages increases the daily amount needed. The effects of dehydra on definitely contribute to numerous poor health issues. Think of a raisin. It’s basically a dehydrated grape, right? No one wants to look like a raisin in old age. Hydra ng will keep you looking and feeling younger.

Member Firm News:
In terms of physical ac vity, we’ve all heard the phrase move it or lose it. But it’s true. If we don’t keep moving our body, our body will quit moving for us. Good physical fitness habits combine cardiovascular and strength training. Recommenda ons include 75 minutes of vigorous physical ac vity weekly and strength training ac vity at least 2 days each week. Consider the fact that there are 80 year olds in wheel chairs and 80 year olds running marathons. Of course, other extenua ng factors can contribute to health challenges in life. But in general, the more you move, the more likely you will be experiencing health independence and running across the finish line of life.
Finally, let’s talk nutri on. This is tough! I won’t lie. There are some really temp ng bad foods you can eat. It’s hard when we are surrounded by over‐processed, undernourished food choices. A couple simple phrases helped me to clean up my ea ng habits years ago. The first is, “you can’t outrun your fork”. This was eye‐opening for me. As a runner, I always thought if you exercised enough, you got a free pass to eat whatever you wanted. But food is fuel for our bodies. Every fruit & vegetable, for instance, performs a specific func on. So deple ng your body of proper nutri on is like pu ng sand in the gas tank of a high performance vehicle. You’re going to ruin it.
The other phrase that made an impact is “everything you eat is either building your body up, or break‐
ing it down”. There are no neutral foods. I promise, it becomes easier to make healthier choices when you literally look at food differently. Plus, you can actually help your body crave healthier foods. That’s what Juice Plus+ did for our family. When we started over 14 years ago, my younger daughter ate corn and grapes. Those were her only fruit & vegetable intake. Today, she is a vegetarian. The point is, you can develop a taste for healthy foods. I’m happy to share informa on with anyone who wants to take preventa ve measures for their health. You can contact me at [email protected]. The bo om line is, when you prac ce good self care, you’ll feel so much be er for years to come. As a result, health independence will be something you can celebrate!

The Number One New York Times Best Seller!

Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love.
From the New York Times best-selling author of Beach Read comes a sparkling new novel that will leave you with the warm, hazy afterglow usually reserved for the best vacations.
Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart - she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown - but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glori- ous week of vacation together.
Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven't spoken since.
Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together - lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.
Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?
