Simplicity in God, the Gospel, and the Good Life

Hello, friends! It is great to be once again back with you in the Kettle Moraine. I wish to express my

gratitude to the many who have already expressed a "Welcome back!" to me. I am grateful to God for the gift this next year that will be for my life and for my priestly formation, and I thank all of you in advance for the ways you will help to form me after the Lord's heart.

Today's Gospel speaks of the call to simplicity. How striking it is that the Lord Jesus calls his disciples, then

and now, to simplicity! It can be tempting to think that the more complicated something is, the better it is. Actually, Jesus says the opposite! "He instructed them to take nothing for journey but a walking stick - no food, no sack, no money in their belts, wear sandals but not a second tunic." Nothing. Did you catch that? The disciples are to take with them only what is

absolutely necessary to accomplish the mission entrusted to them: to preach repentance, to drive out demons, to anoint with oil, and to cure the sick.

Why, though does Jesus instruct to this radical simplicity? Isn't he asking the disciples to do some pretty complicated things?

Jesus teaches us to be simple because by being simple we are able to better glorify the Lord. Too much stuff - materially and otherwise - can get in the way of what God is calling us to do with our lives. This can be hard for us Americans in the 21st Century to accept. We love our stuff. But the truth is, our stuff burdens us and at the same time we can never get enough. The Lord invites us to simplicity because in being simple we are happier.

But before we get too focused on material simplicity, I think it's interesting to draw out another fascinating truth. God, himself, is the simplest being. He has been described by many of the saints in the Catholic tradition to be totally simple! I won't bore you with the philosophy and theology behind that statement, but as it is, we can gather another take away from today's Gospel. Included within the Lord's instruction and invitation to live simply is the path to imitate God.

Not all of us are called to the radical, evangelical poverty like that asked of a friar or sister. We can have more than one tunic, some food, and some money. But there is an invitation to all of us to ask ourselves - even outside of the Lenten season - what material things or activities I am involved with are getting in the way of accomplishing the mission God has entrusted specifically to me? As one of my religious sister friends recently told me, "Poverty is one of the greatest gifts of religious life!

All of my trust is in Jesus, and all of my focus is on his mission."

Zachary Galante

Morning Offering O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen.

St. Michael Fall Festival Big Ticket Raffle—There will be packets of tickets available for pick up this weekend at St.

Michael. Tickets will also be available at both St. Michael & Holy Trinity Parish Offices. We are asking each family to sell 30 tickets and for every $25 in tickets sales, you will receive 3 complimentary tickets.

The Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is celebrated by the Catholic Church on July 16. It is on this day in about 1386 that Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock. She gave him a Brown

Scapular saying, “Take, beloved son this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment, will not suffer everlasting fire.” The scapular symbolizes Mary’s protection and reminds those wearing it of the call to prayer and penance. It stands for a commitment to follow Jesus and imitate Mary as the perfect model of all disciples of Christ.
