The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

ENCOUNTERING the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, LIVING as His missionary disciples and

SHARING His fullness of life in the spirit of St. Thérèse

(2)

Today we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, body and soul, into heaven. While this tenet of our faith was not formally defined until 1950, by Pope Pius XII, it was held from the earliest days of the Church.

How appropriate that Mary, preserved from sin from the moment of her conception in order that she might be prepared to carry the Lord Jesus in her womb, should likewise be spared from bodily corruption.

Her intense love of God and faithfulness to his will for her stand as inspiration to all of us. More closely united to Jesus than any other human being, Mary shows us the path we are called to follow. As her soul proclaimed the greatness of the Lord, we are reminded to praise the God who has done great things for us.

Mary’s assumption hints at what we have to look forward to. Although our bodies will undergo corruption, we will, like Mary, someday be taken into God’s presence, glorified body and immortal soul together. Although we will not rise from the dead three days after our death like Jesus, we will rise, as St. Paul tells us, “when he comes to hand over the kingdom to God our Father. Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under his feet.”

Although there are not many things about heaven that we know for sure, one thing we do know is that our Blessed Mother is there, at the side of her son Jesus, interceding for us, her children.

ASSUMPTION OF MARY

Although the dogma of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY’S ASSUMPTION into heaven only was declared in 1950, the roots of this splendid truth run deep in Scripture and Christendom.

We hold that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the end of her life, was assumed body and soul into heaven.

Notice, carefully, that her entire person is elevated into God’s Presence where she lives forever interceding for us together with all the saints. In fact, the common Christian Creed professes as much.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the resurrection of the body…

Ah – Ha! The “…resurrection of the body!” The Assumption of Mary simply declares that Mary already has experienced what we hold to be true for us all one day: the resurrection of the body.

Mary, the Immaculate Conception, the sinless Mother of God and our Mother, who perfectly responds to God’s Will from the moment of conception throughout the whole of her life, is assumed into heaven at the end of her life, body and soul. This means that alongside her Son Jesus, there is another glorified human body already in heaven.

FATHER CHRIS HUDGIN, OSFS Ǧ ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

By contemplating Mary in heavenly glory, we understand that the earth is not our definitive homeland. It is for us, like Mary, to live today with our sights set squarely on eternity so to come to share in the same glory.

Hold fast to faith, not losing inner peace amid the thousands of daily difficulties.

Our Lady taken up into Heaven shines brilliantly, dispersing the sad shadows of suffering and violence that threaten us this side of heaven.

We may be sure of this: from heaven, Mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern, dispels the gloom in moments of darkness and distress, reassures us with her motherly hand, always seeking to lead us ever closer to Christ Jesus the Lord.

ENGAGING DISCIPLES

Please allow me to divert my usual reflection style this week for a bit more personal sharing. Some of you have heard by now (word has a way of traveling….) that I have moved recently. I am

continuing my ministry here at Little Flower with just a bit longer commute. This last spring, our Congregation made the decision to move our National Novitiate house from

Covington, KY, to the Toledo area. Upon the purchase of a house in Monclova, I was asked to live there with our novices. This past month has been spent making our house a home with all the details that entails.

This past Saturday, I had the wonderful joy and privilege to travel to Chardon, OH, where our province center is now located for the Reception into the Novitiate for one of the young women with whom I am living. Sister Kaitlin Marie received her religious name, our congregational crucifix, and a copy of our Constitutions (Rule of Life) and now begins her two-year period of time as a novice. Sister Laura Marie also lives with us and is nearing the completion of her novitiate and anticipating making her First Profession of Vows in the coming months.

I ask your prayers for these two Sisters especially and for all young men and women who are discerning God’s call in their lives. Each of us bears the responsibility to support our young Church by our prayers and lived witness of faithful love in our own lives. It is one thing to pray for holy vocations and another to live in such a way that we grow vocations in our families and parish.

P.S. I will be gone from Aug. 15-22 to make my annual retreat. Be assured of my prayers for each of you and your families.

FAITH FORMATION

FORMED: This week we celebrate the Feast of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. The Bible and the Virgin Mary, Episode 11, is packed with all kinds of great material. It examines the dogma of the Assumption of Mary, as well as the many facets of the identity of the woman in the Apostle John’s vision in Revelation 12. It also explores how John’s vision in Revelation is the dramatic fulfillment of the promise God made back in the Garden of Eden: the “first gospel.”
