GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER

NEW MEMBERS

PRELATE

Election Day is near so I hope anyone interested in running for the Board of Officers of our lodge has contacted John Mullin, Nominating Committee Chair, or one of the current Board members.

The deadline for nominations is April 12 and Election Day is April 26. Please check the lodge bulletin board for the nominees and information about voting. Then come to the lodge on Election Day (April 26) and make your vote count.

This message is my last one as Governor so I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to some very special people. My term as Governor has been enjoyable and smooth because of our administrator, Don O’Connor, and club manager, Billy Moriority. Our lodge continues to improve and these two play an important role in making Dale City Moose Lodge a great place.

Thanks to each of the Board Members who have provided guidance over the past year. I want to extend a special note of appreciation to Marcel Bedard for his numerous community service efforts this year. We are on pace for another year of Superior rating from Moose International because of Marcel’s efforts.

This year we have completed many improvements to our lodge. We have updated the televisions and sound system. We installed a fence and added a new entryway. Thanks to Mike Penn who assisted in many of these projects. I am looking forward to supporting the new Board of Officers as we continue to improve our lodge.

Bob Skinner Governor

Elections are to be held on April 26 from noon until 6:00 p.m. Be sure to come in and vote.

We were awarded a Superior rating for our Community Service during the third quarters. Thanks to Marcel Bedard, our Community Service Chairman.

Check you calendar and come in for all that’s happening.

Don O’Connor Administrator

Chris Sarna passed away on February 29, 2012, after a long fight with cancer. Chris was a long-time member of the WOTM 1584. Chris was the loving wife of Richard Sarna and a wonderful mother and grandmother. Chris will bemissed by all her friends at the Moose. Our prayers are with the family.

We also mourn the loss of B. Wayne Knick who also passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with his prayers.

February was not a great month for the lodge as we lost a very valuable friend, co-worker and Board member. Chris Sarna lost her battle with lymphoma and lung disease on February 29 . She will be truly missed as her smile always made a big impact toth all the lives she touched along with her great attitude about life. She was a great inspiration and, as many of you know, the memories of her will carry on in the lodge forever. WE MISS AND LOVE YOU, CHRIS.

Thank you to all the ladies for coming out and voting in our election for the new Board of Officers in March. The new Board of Officers will be posted within the lodge during the month of April.

Our annual Easter Party is coming up and we are asking for donations of cooked and colored eggs to be used in the festivities. Please have your eggs at the lodge no later than April 5. I would like to invite all the ladies and gentlemen to come our for the installation of the new 2012-2013 Board of Officers on April 29. Come help us welcome the new board.

Ladies, thank you for all you do and I look forward to another great year here at Dale City Moose lodge.

SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

April Health Column by Rayma Skinner

Spring is here and much of the cold and flu season is gone. Those disease-causing germs and viruses are still around so it is important to keep a strong immune system to remain healthy and fight illness all year. One way to support your immune system is through the foods your eat. The following foods can support and strengthen your immune system.

Elderberry. Elderberry is an old folk remedy that scientists are studying. An extract from these berries appears to block flu viruses in test tube studies. The fruit itself is rich in antioxidants and also may have the ability to flight inflammation.

Button Mushrooms. Mushrooms are rich in the mineral selenium and antioxidants. Low levels of selenium have been linked to increased risk of developing more severe flu. The B vitamins riboflavin and niacin, found in mushrooms, play a role in a healthy immune system. Animal studies have shown mushrooms to have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-tumor effects.

Acai Berry. To acai berry’s dark color signals that it is high in antioxidants called anthocyanins. These berries are not linked to specific disease- or illness-fighting ability but the antioxidants help your body fight aging and disease.

Acai berries can be found in juice or smoothie form, dried and mixed with granola, or covered in chocolate.

Oysters. Aphrodisiac? Immune Boosters? Maybe they are both thanks to the zinc that is found in oysters.

Low zinc levels have been associated with male infertility. Zinc appears to have some antiviral effect and is important to several immune system tasks including healing wounds.

Watermelon. Hydrating and refreshing, ripe watermelon also has plenty of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant.

Known to help strengthen the immune system so it can fight infection, glutathione is found in the red pulpy flesh near the rind.

Cabbage. Cabbage also contains glutathione. It is easy and inexpensive to find. Try adding cabbage of any variety to soups and stews to boost your antioxidant intake.

Almonds. A handful of almonds makes a great snack and can support your immune system from the effects of stress. A ¼ cup serving provides nearly 50% of the daily recommended amount of Vitamin E, an immune system booster. Almonds also have riboflavin and niacin that help you bounce back from the effects of stress.

Grapefruit. Grapefruits have a lot of vitamin C and are packed with flavonoids. Flavoniods are natural chemical compounds that increase immune system activation. If you take statins for high cholesterol, do not eat grapefruit and eat oranges or tangerines instead.

Wheat Germ. Wheat germ is the part of a wheat seed that feeds a baby wheat plant. It is full of nutrients: zinc, antioxidants, and B vitamins. Wheat germ also offers a good mix of fiber, protein, and some good fat. Substitute wheat germ for part of a regular flour called for in baked goods and other recipes.

Low-Fat Yogurt. A daily cup may reduce your chances of getting a cold. Look for labels listing “live and active cultures.” Some researchers believe they may stimulate your immune system to fight disease. Also look for vitamin D. Recent studies have found a link between low vitamin D levels and an increased risk of cold and flu.

Garlic. Garlic offers several antioxidants that battle immune system invaders. Among garlic’s targets are H.

Pylori, the bacteria associated with some ulcers and stomach cancer. Peel, chop, and let sit 15 to 20 minutes before cooking to activate immune-boosting enzymes.

Spinach. Spinach is nutrient-rich and is known as a super food. It has folate, which helps your body produce new cells and repair DNA. It boasts fiber, antioxidants, such as vitamin C, and more. Eat spinach raw or lightly cooked to get the most benefit.

Tea. Both green and back tea are loaded with disease-fighting polyphenols and flavanoids. These antioxidants seek out cell-damaging free radicals and destroy them. Caffeinated and decaf work equally well. You can steep several green tea bags in chicken broth and use the broth for a soup with an Asian flavor. Finely chopped black tea can be used as part of a coating for chicken breasts, port chops, or other meats.

Sweet Potato. Like carrots, sweet potatoes have the antioxidant beta-carotene, which cleans up damaging radicals. Sweet potatoes also have vitamin A, which is linked to slowing the aging process and may reduce the risk of some cancers.

Broccoli. Broccoli is an immune-boosting basic. One study reporting a chemical in broccoli helped stimulate the immune systems of mice. It has Vitamins A and C and glutathione.
