Companies that do not want to build a wealth of database management can leave the hard work to others and rent a hosted service. However, while the service may be hosted, advanced database knowledge and continual upkeep is required to help ensure data flows and scales appropriately.

Managed

Growth may lead to the managed option being cheaper than DIY or hosted. If the company moves onto another continent, they may need to duplicate the servers and expertise, and work on replicating the data. The work may be more expensive than handing over the data cluster to a specialist management company. We have entered an era where high-speed Internet access is universal, milliseconds matter, and nearly all software

developers work in a connected state while actively developing. Why can’t databases follow suit?

This provides an opportunity to leverage the cloud for things that historically would have been done locally. By moving the data and management to the cloud, it is easier for users to work across multiple data sources and scale in ways that were previously challenging. Leveraging the cloud helps enable users to scale at a moments notice, help ensure higher durability and handle updates and maintenance without the need to purchase more hardware or hire more staff.
