W ELCOME TO ONLINE WORSHIP

Thank you for joining us online today. May the Word of God that you hear strengthen your faith and increase your desire to serve the Lord!

The world may be in a state of panic, but the Church of Jesus is a place of refuge where we know God’s peace. We gather today to hear God’s Word and to rejoice in his message of comfort and forgiveness, of life and salvation. We are honored that you are joining us for our online worship.

• This service folder will enable you to follow along and participate in the service wherever you are. You are also welcome to use your personal hymnal and Bible at home.

• You may wish to sing along with the hymns or simply reflect upon the text—this is the beauty of our hymns with a strong, Christ-centered message!

If there is any other way in which we can assist you, please let us know.

For the latest information about our schedule of services, please visit elctempe.org.

P ENTECOST 17 — S EPTEMBER 19, 2021

Life in the shadow of Jesus’ cross

Jesus never promised it would be easy to be his disciple. Instead of promising earthly wealth, Jesus invites us to follow a Master who had no place to lay his head. Jesus calls blessed those who are poor in spirit, mournful, insulted and persecuted for his sake. This is not what the world is looking for, but Jesus promises something greater than the world can even imagine.

We are blessed to live in the shadow of Jesus’ cross. Everyone experiences times of darkness, but we who follow Jesus know that he never leaves us. We enter the shadows knowing that we are bound for eternal light. We are eternal optimists because of our Savior.

We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child.

But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever.

You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

Amen.

Isaiah 50:4-10

4 The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.

5 The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back.

6 I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.

7 Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.

8 He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me!

9 It is the Sovereign LORD who helps me. Who is he that will condemn me?

They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.

Isaiah prophesies the coming of Jesus, who will endure disgrace to save God's people.

Colossians 3:1-25

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Set your heart on things above, not on earthly things.

(7)

18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.

Please stand.

Mark 8:27-35

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”

29 "But what about you?" he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered,

“You are the Christ.”

30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise be to you, O Christ.

Be seated.

The goal of the world is ease and comfort. Jesus calls us to carry the hard cross of discipleship and sacrifice.

What God Ordains Is Always Good

Christian worship 429, arr. Dan Forrest The cantors sing stanza 4 and the last line of stanza 5.

Cantors:

What God ordains is always good. Though I the cup am drinking Which savors now of bitterness, I take it without shrinking.

For after grief God grants relief, My heart with comfort filling And all my sorrow stilling.

All: What God ordains is always good; This truth remains unshaken.

Though sorrow, need, or death be mine, I shall not be forsaken.

I fear no harm for with his arm He will embrace and shield me;

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Many of our worshipers have been giving online or have been mailing their church offerings or dropping them off at the church office. If you would like to give your offering in person today, you may come up now and place it in the offering plate at the front of church. The offering plate is in the front of the church, instead of near the church entrance because our offerings are part of our worship and are an important part of the service. We also want our offerings to be more secure at the front of the church. You may continue giving online, or you may drop off your offering at the church office during regular hours or mail your offering to church at: 715 W Southern Avenue, Tempe AZ 85282. Thank you for your generous offerings to support the ministry of the gospel at Emmanuel!

Sunday morning helpers

Starting on October 10, we would like to offer more opportunities for people to serve on Sunday. Please pray and think about offering your time to serving on Sunday morning. Here are some opportunities to serve:

Parking lot attendants. These are individuals who can wave and smile.

They might also direct people driving through our parking lot. We are looking to have two people stationed at the entrance to our parking lot and two people in our parking lot.

Gate greeters. These are individuals who can smile and greet people.

They would be stationed at the two entrances to our church courtyard.

They are friendly people who are willing to direct people who ask for help.

Welcome table greeters. These are friendly individuals who are ready to supply information to guests and members. Brochures and connection cards are available at the welcome table.

Bakers, cooks, buyers of refreshments. We are looking to increase our refreshments for all ages. To do that, we are in need of people who like to bake, cook, prepare, or buy refreshments and snacks. Having

refreshments and snacks is a great way for people to hang out and talk.

This is an important part of our welcoming atmosphere.

Refreshment hosts. These are individuals who will man the refreshment table. They will make sure that supplies are available and that garbage cans are not overflowing.

Setup. We are looking for people who are the early risers. These individuals will arrive in plenty of time to set up tables, refreshments, etc.

Takedown. We are looking for people who can stay after all our Sunday services and take tables down. These individuals would also help with clean up and locking doors.

If you would like to serve in one or more of these important positions, please sign up by going to elctempe.org/serve.

Thank you in advance for your willingness to volunteer. Many friendly and helpful people are needed to create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere on our Emmanuel campus.

Ushers needed

Are you able to serve as an usher? Please consider signing up for one of the upcoming Sundays. We hope to fill up our roster for the rest of the year. Simply, select the service time which works best for you: Sundays at 8:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. or Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Please sign up at elctempe.org/usher. The December signup will be updated soon with Christmas, New Years and Advent services.

Sign up for dates that work for you, we understand that it is not possible to usher every Sunday in a month. Once you sign up, Signup Genius will send you a reminder email when you are scheduled. One usher per service will work but it would be great if we could have two ushers per service. So fathers, consider having your son help as your co-usher.

The usher duties are quite easy:

• Arrive 10 minutes before the service and set out bulletins on the entry tables.

Ask the pastor, prior to service, if there are any special requests.

• Smile and greet and welcome people as the arrive.

• Count the number of people in attendance in the service and record in binder.

• Collect offerings from collection plates at the end of service and deposit in office. Pick up any items/bulletins left behind in pews.

• Optional-Release/dismiss people at the end of service.

If you have any questions or would like more information about ushering, please feel free to contact Steve Sallquist at sallquist1@gmail.com or (480) 580-4489.

Our Emmanuel Lutheran School A-team girl volleyball team had their first game on Tuesday.

It’s not the same, is it?

COVID-19 changed everything for our congregation. We learned how to worship online from home. We used virtual ways to stay connected to each other—to maintain our sense of Christian community. We also adapted how we serve each other and our neighbors while remaining socially distanced. But it’s just not the same, is it?

When we look at the blessings from the pandemic, one of the biggest is that we were reminded in so many ways of the joy we experience when God’s people gather. There is just no replacement for it.

Now it’s time to celebrate! Let’s celebrate being able to gather together again.

Let’s celebrate the joy we experience as a family of believers when we worship together, fellowship with each other, serve together, and take the Lord’s supper side by side.

On Sunday, October 10, we are going to celebrate as a church family and praise God on a very special celebration Sunday, as we re-gather after time apart. Psalm 26:8 says, “I love the house where you live, O LORD, the place where your glory dwells.” This is why we gather.

During this service, we will have a special focus on why God’s people gather.

Our choirs will beautify our services. We will have fellowship time between our services on Sunday.

Please plan to join us on October 10. Invite your family and friends. It is a joy to remember that God’s people gather.
