2012 Season In Review

The 2012 season began with 10 straight road games for the Indiana State baseball team, with trips to Hammond, Louisiana, for three games with Southeastern Louisiana, Huntsville, Alabama, for four games in a tournament hosted by Alabama A&M, and Richmond, Kentucky, for a three-game set with Eastern Kentucky. Indiana State went 6-4 in their opening road swing as junior Robby Ort paced the team early in the season, going 20-for-40 (.500) at the plate with five doubles, three home runs and 15 runs batted in through ISU’s first 10 games.

Indiana State’s 11-10 win over Eastern Kentucky sparked a 13-game win streak for the team, a span that stretched from March 4-23. The Sycamores swept their six-game homestand at Bob Warn Field, in- cluding a 10-0 victory over Eastern Illinois and a 13-8 win over in-state rival Indiana. Freshman Kyle Rupe turned in 10 strikeouts over seven shutout innings against EIU, before ISU scored in seven of their eight innings at the plate against the Hoosiers. Indiana State completed the homestand sweep by winning three games over Tennessee Martin and one game with SIU Edwardsville.

Saint Patrick’s Day Weekend sent ISU to San Antonio, Texas, as the Sycamores took part in Notre Dame’s annu- al tournament in the Lone Star State. Clutch pitching and hitting led ISU to a four-game sweep of the tournament.

Indiana State defeated Kansas, 2-1, in the opening game of the tournament, before senior Kyle Burnam delivered a walkoff win in game two as ISU topped Houston Baptist, 4-3. ISU and Notre Dame battled for the tournament title over the next two days, with the Sycamores winning 6-4 in 10 innings on Saint Patrick’s Day before taking home the tournament trophy with a 6-1 victory on Sunday. Redshirt junior Koby Kraemer hit a two-out, two-run triple in the 10th inning on Saint Patrick’s Day to defeat the Fighting Irish before Rupe allowed just three hits over 6.2 innings on Sunday to Notre Dame as ISU finished off the tournament sweep. ISU’s 12th consecutive win came on the road at Missouri, as the Sycamores pounded out 18 hits and 15 runs in a 15-1 win in Columbia, Mo.

ISU carried their 12-game winning streak into Missouri Valley Conference play, opening the league season with a three-game set at in-state rival Evansville. Junior Dakota Bacus led ISU to a win on Friday night, striking out a season-high 13 batters while tossing nine shutout innings on the mound. Indiana State’s winning streak would come to an end on Saturday as the Purple Aces rallied for a 3-2 win with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but ISU took the series on Sunday behind six shutout innings from junior Ryan Torgerson as the Sycamores won 6-0.

The Sycamores moved to 5-0 in midweek action the following week, picking up a 21-1 win over Illinois Springfield in Terre Haute before defeating in-state foe Ball State, 14-3, in Muncie, Ind. Freshman Landon Curry provided the power for ISU against Ball State, hitting a grand slam in front of his high school teammates from Norwell High School during the

contest. Indiana State played their first home conference series the following weekend, taking two out of three games from Illinois State as the Syca- mores improved to 23-6 on the season.

April, as ISU played five extra-inning games out of nine total contests from April 3-17. Indiana State earned an 8-7 win in Chicago over UIC on April 3, as 10 ISU relievers combined to pitch in the 12-inning game.

ISU hit the road to Omaha, Neb., for three games with Creighton, earn- ing a 6-3 win over Friday and a 2-0 win on Saturday in 12 innings. ISU was no-hit for nine complete innings by Creighton’s Erik Mattingly, but senior Lucas Hileman kept the game scoreless by throwing out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior Jon Hedges sup- plied the offense, knocking a two-run single with two outs in the 12th inning to give ISU their only runs of the game. For just the second time in the season, ISU lost back-to-back games, falling in the series finale to the Bluejays, 8-0, before the Indiana Hoosiers picked up a walkoff win in Bloomington during the midweek, 8-7.

It was back to extra-inning affairs after that, as ISU played a pair of 11-inning games at Bradley to open the series. ISU won 5-4 in game one before Bradley won 5-4 in game two. The Sycamores made quick work of the Braves on Sunday to earn their fourth straight MVC series win, plating 12 runs in the first three innings en route to a 14-3 victory.

The extra-inning games went to another level on April 17 against Valparaiso, as the Sycamores and Crusaders played 16 innings over four and a half hours in Terre Haute. ISU tied a NCAA record during the game by leaving 24 runners on base, while Valparaiso was not far behind, leaving 17 for the game. The Sycamores won 2-1 in the bottom of the 16th inning, as senior Jeff Miera’s bunt down the third base line was thrown into right field, allowing Burnam to score the game-winning run.

Arguably Indiana State’s biggest series win of the season came the following weekend, as the Sycamores took two out of three games from Dallas Baptist in Terre Haute. DBU took game one of the series, but ISU came back with wins on Saturday (6-3) and Sunday (7-5) to move to 31-10 on the year. Indiana State finished off April with a midweek win over Illinois and a series win over Nebraska Omaha. ISU’s series win over Nebraska Omaha fea- tured a walkoff two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning by senior Ryan Walterhouse and a walkoff bunt single by Curry.

Indiana State made it five-for-five in conference series wins to start May, taking two out of three games from Wichita State in Terre Haute. Junior Jeremy Lucas gave ISU a walkoff

win in the bottom of the 10th inning on Friday night, leading the Syca- mores to a 1-0 win with a single to left field just inside the third base bag. Indiana State claimed the series on Saturday, rallying with four runs in the eighth inning, with three coming on a three-run home run by Ort in ISU’s 6-3 win.

After a midweek win at SIU Edwardsville, the Sycamores picked up their first MVC series sweep since 2009, taking three games on the road at Southern Illinois. The series sweep put ISU in position to win the regular season at home the following weekend against second-place Missouri State and moved ISU over the 40-win plateau for just the ninth time in school history. The Sycamores also turned a triple play on Sunday against the Salukis, their first since the 2008 season.

Before their key series with Missouri State, ISU closed out the noncon- ference season with a road game at nationally-ranked Purdue. Both In- diana State and Purdue had midweek games cancelled with Butler and

agreed to a game in West Lafayette. Rupe put ISU in position for a key nonconference win, allowing just two hits in 6.2 scoreless innings as ISU led 1-0 heading to the ninth. The Boilermakers rallied in the ninth to tie the game, getting a two-out solo home run before winning the game in the 10th inning. Indiana State finished the year 10-2 in midweek games, with their only losses coming in walkoff fashion on the road.

Indiana State needed just one win in the three-game series with Missouri State over the next weekend and took no time in claiming the title, defeating MSU’s Nick Petree on Thursday by a score of 6-3. Petree had entered the game without allowing an earned run during the conference season, but the Sycamores getting a RBI-single in the first inning from Lucas before Curry hit a two-run double in the second frame. The 6-3 win gave ISU their first outright regular season championship in school history and their first overall since 1985. Indiana State’s regular season title was their fourth in program history, joining the 1982, 1983 and 1985 teams.

The Sycamores closed out the regular season with their first four-game losing streak since April 15-19, 2011, dropping the final two games of their series to Missouri State before being eliminated from the State Farm MVC Tournament by Creighton and Evansville.

Junior Jeremy Lucas was named the Joe Carter MVC Player of the Year prior to the tournament, the first student- athlete in program history to be named the league’s MVP. Junior Dakota Bacus earned the MVC Newcomer of the Year award, while head coach Rick Heller was named the Dan Callahan MVC Coach of the Year. Eight Syca- mores were named to the All-Conference teams, highlighted by Lucas, Bacus and junior Robby Ort on the First Team.

On Selection Monday, the Sycamores earned an at-large bid to the Eugene Regional, their first trip to the post- season since 1995 and eighth overall in school history. The at-large bid was just the second for the Indiana State baseball program.

Indiana State opened the Eugene Regional with a 9-5 loss to Cal State Fullerton before facing Austin Peay in an elimination game. Manaea struck out nine batters in the elimination game with the Governors, but APSU was able to scratch across a two-out run in the fourth inning for the game’s only run.

Indiana State clinched the regular season championship on Thursday, May 17, winning the opening game of their series with Missouri State, 6-3. The regular season title is the fourth in program history, joining the 1982, 1983 and 1985 teams. The championship was the first outright title for ISU, as the 1982 and 1983 teams won the East Division, while the 1985 squad tied with Wichita State. The postseason appearance was the eighth in school history for the Sycamores and their first since winning the MVC Tournament in 1995. ISU also broke the 40-win barrier this past season, their first since 1992 and tallied their most overall wins since 1991.

Heller was named the Dan Callahan MVC Coach of the Year following the season, while junior catcher Jeremy Lucas (Joe Carter MVC Player of the Year) and junior pitcher Dakota Bacus (MVC Newcomer of the Year) also earned specialty awards. Lucas became the first player in Indiana State baseball history to be named the conference’s Player of the Year. Eight members of the 2012 team were named All-MVC, led by Lucas, Dakota and junior outfielder Robby Ort earning First Team status. Following the season, Bacus (9th round, Oakland), Lucas (12th round, Cleveland) and senior Brandon Dorsett (Free Agent, Toronto) all signed contracts to begin their professional careers.

In 2011, ISU made their deepest run in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament since 2002 and claimed their third consecutive winning season. The Sycamores finished 29-28 in 2011, going 8-13 in confer- ence play before making a run to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament. ISU entered the tournament as the sixth seed and eliminated the third-seeded Illinois State Redbirds before pushing the second-seeded Wichita State Shockers to an elimination game for a spot in the championship game. Heller recorded his 600th career win against Central Arkansas on a day when senior Jason

Van Skike threw the first nine-inning no-hitter at Indiana State since 1949.

The 2011 Sycamores were one of the top defensive teams in the country, placing 20th in fielding percentage and only making 11 fielding errors during MVC play. The Sycamores also placed 42nd in the country in hits allowed per nine innings. Sophomores Robby Ort and Jeremy Lucas both earned All-MVC selections. Four members of the pitching staff signed professional contracts following the season, with Colin Rea, Blake Drake, Jason Van Skike and Brett Merkley all moving on to continue their baseball careers.

Heller led the Sycamores to a 35-19 record in his first sea- son at the helm in 2010, the most wins for any first-year head coach in ISU baseball history. Indiana State finished in third place in the MVC standings and was one of two teams within the conference to receive votes in national polls during the season. Jacob Petricka was selected in the second round of the MLB draft, the 63rd overall pick by the Chicago White Sox. Ryan Strausborger was selected by the 16th round by Texas Rangers while Joe Rodriguez and Ben Ferrell also signed professional contracts in 2010.

Strausborger won the prestigious Rawlings Gold Award for his defensive ability in centerfield. Nine members of the 2010 squad were named All-MVC, led by Jacob Petricka and Ryan Strausborger on the First Team. As a team the

Head coach Heller became the 28th head baseball coach in Indiana State history when he was hired on August 14, 2009, with his previous 22 years split between a 12-year run at Upper Iowa University and 10 years at the University of Northern Iowa.

During his tenure at UNI, Heller’s teams won 270 games, including one Missouri Valley Conference championship and NCAA Regional berth. While building the Panthers into an annual contender, Heller coached three MVC Most Valuable Players, one MVC Pitcher of the Year and helped put 22 players into professional baseball.

Heller’s team won the Iowa Conference and advanced to the NCAA Regional’s again in 1995. His team finished 19th in the national rankings and he won his third Coach of the Year honor. He repeated Coach of the Year honors again in 1996 when the Peacocks won the Iowa Conference and Central Regional to advance to the NCAA Division III Col- lege World Series. His team finished the year ranked sixth nationally and he was named NCAA Division III Central Region Coach of the Year. That 39-12 team also set a school record for wins.
