Pronunciation
For English students, from middle school to adult
Most non-native speakers have trouble with certain sounds of English because they do not have those sounds in the their own language. For example:

For example, when you’re covering the FOOD unit in your class, use the FOOD unit here to improve pronunciation.
Vocabulary will also be improved because the answer words
are topic words such as: brunch, buffet, crispy, vegetarian.
•
Is it easy to improve pronunciation?
No. It’s hard. Very hard. And every year it gets harder.
Pronunciation is not an intellectual activity. It is a muscular activity that requires repetitive practice.
•
How repetitive? Each activity requires each student to ask about 70 questions which require precise pronunciation: Did you say bat or beat?
•
Each activity takes about 30 minutes. The games gradually get more
difficult, but students improve so the time remains about the same.
All human learning can be summed up in three words: watch, try, repeat.
Here’s your co-teacher for pronunciation
WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR?
EFL students, from middle school to adult.
Virtually all non-native speakers have trouble with certain sounds of English, primarily because they do not have those sounds in their native languages. Therefore, they have no habit discerning nor producing these sounds. These are some of the main sounds that EFL students have trouble with.
WHAT IS IT?
16 Battleship type, information-gap, pair activities for the 16 most common ESL textbook topics. Thus, you can have a pronunciation focus with whatever unit or topic you are covering.
The usual coordinates for a battleship game are A, B, C, and 1, 2, 3. These are easy to distinguish and pronounce. These COORDINATE WORDS feature the most difficult sounds for Koreans to distinguish and pronounce, such as:
light, right, night, white, and beat, bat, bet, bit.
The ANSWER WORDS are vocabulary from the ESL topic, for example, FOOD: appetizer, bland, brunch, buffet,
crispy, waitress, vegetarian.
HOW LONG?
The activities can take from 20 to 40 minutes. Body language is encouraged. This fundamental task is to communicate. Pairs that finish first check their answers and then talk about the topic.
After everyone has finished, pronounce all the words coordinate words again. “Next week, we’ll do it again, with a new topic, with new partners.”
WHY?
Because French people speak English with a French accent. Chinese speak English with a Chinese accent. For their whole life their mouth muscles have been used differently. Pronunciation is about muscles and muscles require EXTENSIVE practice. Here is extensive practice – directly related to the topic being covered.

STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS
In the first activity, FAMILY, instead of 1, 2, 3 and A, B, C (which are easy to pronounce), you will use words that sound alike, such as: light, right, white, night; ban pan, fan, van; seat, sat, set, sit
Me: Is there a letter in RIGHT and FAN?
You: Wait. Did you say LIGHT, like in the sun?
Me: No. RIGHT, like in correct.
You: OK, got it. Wait, did you say PAN, like to cook, or FAN like the wind?
Me: FAN, like electric fan.
You: OK, I got it. No, there is no letter there.
There will be confusion.
Clearing up that confusion will require real communication, and improve your pronunciation and listening.

4. So, you take turns asking 4 questions.
Is there a letter at 1 and A? No. Is there a letter at 1 and B? No. Is there a letter at 4 and C? Yes, a U. AUNCLE! No. Du-uh.
Is there a letter at 4 and D? Yes, N. AUNT!
Students sit in pairs, facing each other.
1. Pronounce the pronunciation practice at the top. (Or play the audio) 2. Pronounce the coordinate words. Or play.
3. Go over the instructions. After the first week, this is not needed.
4. Student A is looking for FOOD words to fill his blanks at the bottom of his sheet. Student B has those words at the top of her sheet.
5. Student B is looking for her words, which are at the top of A’s sheet. 6. Yell: ACTION!
Each students asks 4 questions, then it’s their partners turn. It goes like this:
A student asks: Is there a letter at near and berry ? B says, Did you say VERY or BERRY?
BERRY, like the fruit. B answers, No. Is there a letter at rear and berry? B answers, No. Is there a letter at we’re and berry? B answers, No.
OK. Is there a letter at we’re” and very? B says, Yes, there’s a ‘C.’ My turn.
B student says: Is there a letter at ray and berry? A answers, No.
Is there a letter at ray and very? A answers Yes, there’s a E. Is there a letter at ray and ferry, like the boat? A answers Yes, there’s a T.
B guesses: EAT! A says, That’s not how you spell EAT!
Bummer. Is there a letter at ray and Perry? A says, Yes, there’s an ‘H’. My turn. And so on until they finish.
Details
1. Whenever students guess wrong, they scratch out the block so they don’t ask about block again. 2. Students can guess, this speeds things up. For example, most could guess after knowing: “APPETIZ” 3. The top of each sheet tells students how many horizontal and vertical words they are looking for. 4. Encourage students to pronounce clearly, and to give examples if necessary:
Berry, like the fruit. Ferry, like a boat. Ray like an X-ray. Near, like close by.
5. There will be confusion. For example, a student might confuse ray with way, and: a) give wrong answers for the whole row, or b) write the answers in the wrong row. Clearing up this confusion is fun, and builds pronunciation and communication skills.
6. After pair group finishes, have them check their answers, then talk about the topic. 7. After everybody finishes, pronounce the coordinate words again. Twice.
Outcome
Each game has about 70 answer vocabulary. After finishing, each student has pronounced about 140 words that sound alike, and tried to comprehend 140 words.
That is repetitive practice. They are better.

3. Always use the words on the left first, then the words on the top, for example 1 and A, 2 and B.
4. You ask 4 questions, then your partner asks 4 questions.
5. Guess whenever you want, but if you guess wrong, you lose a turn.
6. It will go something like this:
LEE: Is there a letter at RIGHT and FAN? KIM: Did you say VAN or FAN?
LEE: FAN, like to move the wind.
KIM: Wait. Did you say RIGHT or NIGHT? LEE: I said RIGHT, like in correct
KIM: No.
LEE: Fine! Is there a letter at LAY and FAN?
7. If you find a square with a letter in it, ask about the square above or below it, or to the right or left. The more letters you know, the easier it will be to guess. 8. The better you get at pronouncing, the
faster the game goes. Cool. 9. After you finish, talk about your
personality. Your parents. Last weekend, next weekend. Talk about whatever.
HANDY PHRASES: Again please. Louder please. Your turn. My turn. Whose turn? Du-uh. That’s not how you spell NIECE!
