Welcome to our club

You’ve joined at an exciting time for Wells Tennis Club. We have a strong coaching development plan, are working on improved facilities for a move in the next few years and are building our calendar for match play, competition days, open sessions and social events.

The Committee and members are pleased to welcome you to Wells Tennis Club and hope that you enjoy your tennis and membership of the Club. The Committee are here to help the Club develop and improve so please don’t hesitate to contact us with your ideas and comments at any time.

As a member you can now use any of the five courts, subject to coaching or special

bookings, join in any club sessions to help you improve and represent the club in matches for winter and summer leagues. Additionally you’ll benefit from free balls (replaced every week), members’ discount for all coaching and cardio tennis sessions,

social events and entry for the Wimbledon ballot (once you have your British Tennis membership number). Young players can either drop in for coaching on a Saturday or sign-up for after-school lessons at a reduced rate.

Wells Tennis Club is part of national, regional and local networks for the sport. We are members of the Lawn Tennis Association and this means that all our members can gain British Tennis Membership that open up grant and ticketing opportunities for us.

We aim to provide a welcoming, safe and inclusive club and our safeguarding policy and procedures are reviewed and accredited regularly.

I hope you find everything you need in this handbook to get started with your

membership. Keep an eye on our website for news and events. You can follow the club on twitter @wellstennisclub and on Facebook. I look forward to seeing you on court. Kind Regards

Competition and matches

If you’d like to develop your competition skills and represent the club do sign up for teams in the clubhouse or speak to one of the captains. At Wells we take part in the North Somerset summer and winter leagues. We’re pleased to have won the men’s league twice in recent years, and members have represented Somerset County teams in junior, adult and senior age groups. Summer

Four men’s teams which play on Monday evenings from 6.30pm for 10 weeks. Four ladies teams which play on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm for 10 weeks.

There are four players in each team to play doubles only. Each pair plays the best of three sets against each opposing pair. If games are 6-6 then a tie-break is played in all sets.

Winter

Matches by arrangement (usually Sundays) for mixed teams who each play 10 matches.

The team is made up of four players, two men and two ladies and the match consists of a mixed and ladies/mens doubles.

Juniors

Children and teenagers can have fun on court through learning and competition at Wells Tennis Club. As well as coaching opportunities after school, on Saturdays and during the school holidays the club is developing more opportunities for competition events.

Our annual open day and participation in the Great British Tennis Weekend is a great way to introduce family and friends to the club with activities for all ages. All new junior members will receive a club t-shirt.

At our club, we want to provide a safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment for all our members. We are committed to working in accordance with statutory responsibilities, government guidance and comply with the best practice and requirements set by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). We aim to ensure that all children and adults have a positive and enjoyable tennis experience. If a child is under 13 years old, a parent or carer must be supervising them whilst they are at the club, unless they take part in arranged coaching sessions. If you are not able to supervise your children, arrangements need to be made by the parent/carer, e.g. designating a specific adult to act in loco parentis.

Our safeguarding policy is published on our website.
