according to your abundant mercy blot out our sins.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love and Forgiveness

(responsive)

Leader: Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn?

Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us.

Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.

The old life has gone; a new life has begun.

Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

People: Amen

*We Give God Glory

Reading from God's Word – John 6:24-35

(NRSV)

24 So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Song I Know

David Evans

Renae Baker, soloist

I've heard people say the world can be explained by atoms colliding And then some insist if God really does exist, well, he must be hiding

I say let the doubters doubt 'cause God, I've found you out Every time I count the stars in the sky, I know

Or watch a single cloud sail lazily by, I know Who else could make the grand canyon oh so grand

Or fill a seashore up with tiny grains of sand

Or make the feeling that I get from holding your hand? I know, I know.

I've heard people sneer if God is really here he's an underachiever Well, this is what I've found, if they take a look around they'll be a believer

For you are here in everything, even in this song we sing

(5)

Every time I catch the sunrise at dawn, I know Or see an ugly duckling change to a swan, I know

Who else could help the bald eagle fly so high Or let my spirits soar when eating apple pie

Or make a better world with just a butterfly, I know, I know Every time I see a tree standing tall, I know

Or when maple leaves change color in fall, I know I have so many questions to ask of you You answer everyone in everything you do

In the sky, in the sea, in the rain, in the snow, in the light Yes, I know, in the stars, now I know,

In the sky, in the sea, in the rain, in the snow, in the light Yes, I know, in my heart, now I know.

Reading from God's Word – Ephesians 4:1-16 (NRSV)

1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

7 But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it is said,

“When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;

he gave gifts to his people.”

9 (When it says, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also

descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all

things.) 11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. 14 We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15 But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

WELCOME and thank you for your part in this service of worship. If you are a visitor here at the Presbyterian Church of Upper Montclair (PCUM), you are especially welcome. May you sense in this place the presence and the love of God in Christ. You and your fellow worshipers are warmly invited to gather outside the church on the East Lawn to greet one another after the service.

PCUM WELCOMES PAMELA OSBORNE as today’s preacher and worship leader. Pam is preparing to enter her third (and final!) year of the Master of Divinity program at Union

Theological Seminary in New York City. After a career in social work, and the chance to volunteer her way through her daughter’s school journey, she is pursuing a lifelong sense of call towards ordained ministry. Pam is a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Montclair where she has served as an elder and deacon alongside many other roles. She is a candidate for ordination in the Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey. Pam lives in Verona with her husband, Scott, and is enjoying having her daughter home this summer from her first year of college in Boston.

PCUM’S COVIDGUIDELINES:With the maximum number of PCUM worshipers' health and well-being in mind, the Session has adopted a comprehensive, cautious set of protocols to govern this transition. After this initial period, if infection rates keep dropping and vaccination rates continue to rise, the Session will move to ease restrictions further. For this first phase back, here are several of the most important protocols/restrictions to keep in mind:

* Registration (online and--if seats are available, in-person) and check-in will be required. Those registering will be asked to provide the names of each person who will be worshiping as part of their group. Links to register for Sunday in-person worship can be found on the church website at www.pcum.org or in church emails.

* All worshipers, either individuals or groups (families), will sit in pre-assigned, safely- distanced seats. Ushers will guide you to your assigned seats. Please follow ushers'

instructions at all times. * The maximum number of persons allowed in the sanctuary at one time will be 120.

* Masks will be required for all worshipers (who are not leading worship) whether speaking or singing, at all times while in the building. This is the start of a new phase in our community’s recovery to “normal,” and each of us has their own level of comfort as to how quickly we get there.

Again, it is the first step, one we're all taking together. In order to maximize the number of PCUM worshipers who will feel welcome in this initial phase, PCUM's leaders have chosen to err on the side of caution by requiring masks at this time. In addition, all or most children and younger teens in our church family have not yet been vaccinated. Thank you for respecting and adhering to this requirement.

* All worship leaders are fully vaccinated and distanced from worshipers.

*In this initial phase, there will be no Sunday School classes or other Sunday educational programming. A safely-distanced children's sermon will be offered during worship. Weather and logistics permitting, in the last 20 minutes of each service, church leaders plan to invite children outside to the East lawn for music and activities.

* In order to maintain social distancing, movement within the sanctuary will be restricted.

* Worshipers are respectfully asked and strongly encouraged to ARRIVE EARLY (at least 10 minutes early) during this initial transition phase. This will allow time for you and other worshipers to be checked-in and seated--and allow the service to start on time. Late-comers will be seated only at a specific, pre-determined moment, well after the service has started.

* A Sunday offering will be received. Offering plates will be stationed near the entrance to the sanctuary so that worshipers may make their offerings as they arrive or depart.

* The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper (Communion) will be celebrated using pre-made, sealed Communion elements, which will be distributed to all worshipers as they arrive.

* Worship services will continue to be live-streamed on PCUM's YouTube channel.

Please continue to pray for God's blessing for this church's ministry and a safe, healthy return to indoor worship. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Pastor Greg Horn at

greghorn@pcum.org.
