Spring Term, 5

March 2021 in Lockdown

News from Mrs. Peacey

COVID Update

Should your child receive a positive test at a weekend or during the holidays

please ring or text 07709987018 and leave a message.

This week we have celebrated

World Book Day

in all the classes both at home and at

school. A special well done for those of you who dressed up and joined your Google

Meets. There were so many inventive costumes from Verruca Salt to Stick Man from

Harry Potter to a pig. Next week we will give you the vouchers which can be used

online or in some supermarkets to get books. I know some of you also listened to the

audiobooks and took part in the activities to celebrate how important books are.

Thank you all again for all you have done in the past two

months, it seems strange to realise that exactly two months

ago; on 5th January, this lockdown started. We will very soon

be back into the swing of school again but please contact

your class teachers if you have any concerns. Mrs Brown will

be back in the office next week but please ring or email her

any queries that you may have.

Accompanying this newsletter is a letter with final

arrangements for returning to school next week, along with

details on how to obtain home testing kits. See you on

Monday…

The March Online Safety Newsletter is now available and accompanies this newsletter. Please take a

look as there is useful information especially with children accessing online games and social media.

Ready Steady Cook is an initiative run by Worcestershire Children First on behalf of Worcestershire

County Council – if you need support, especially through the school holidays with food or activity ideas take a look at their website https://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/readysteadyworcs

CLASS NEWS

On Monday we found out about St

David’s Day, listened to the story of ‘Elen

Benfelen a’r Tair Arth’ (that’s ‘Goldilocks and the

Three Bears’) read in welsh by the lovely Mrs

Clayton, investigated and made daffodils and

explored google earth to locate wales and many

other places as well.

Our theme this week has been farm animals and

we have enjoyed a range of stories which have

led us into map making, creative writing, ladybird

themed maths, weighing and measuring and all

sorts of creative activities from biscuit making

to rock chicks

.

However, the big excitement of the week was on Wednesday when we

had 30 members of Acorn reception and preschool together on

a google meet and we put some chicken eggs into the incubator in our

classroom. If we look after them carefully over the next three

weeks, and are very lucky, we hope to have some baby chicks in Acorn

class just before Easter.

On Thursday many of us chose to dress up

for World Book Day as well as creating our

own

gallery

of

dressed

potato

Our last week of home schooling has been a busy one and the children have worked extremely hard. We’re really proud of all their effort and enthusiasm. We also can’t wait to welcome them all back to school.

Our English lessons continue to be based on our class text, ‘Could a penguin ride a bike?’ This week, the children have gained a greater understanding of questions and statements, been verb detectives, joined sentences with conjunctions and written some very creative ideas.

In Maths, Year 1s have been counting in 2s in all sorts of different ways while Year 2s have explored line symmetry and 2D shapes.

In our Topic lessons, the children learned about the five oceans of the world and began their work on Antarctica. They’ve also been keeping a weather watch throughout the month of February and looked at the data to evaluate the different types of weather recorded and compare it with the observations they made in November.

Our Science lessons this half term are all about Animals and Humans, and this week the children explored the changes that take place as creatures grow up. They each chose one to focus on which was a great activity for all the animal lovers in our class!

As you know, Thursday was World Book Day, and we thought you might like to see

a few photos of the children dressed as their favourite characters. Can you see who

they all are?

Topic

We have continued with our Roman topic and incorporated some of this into our English work too. The children had to think of an alternative ending to the Romulus and Remus story. Many came up with a cooperative solution whereby the brothers worked together and settled their differences or built roads, tunnel or a bridge to join two separate cities together. Some however, were unable to reconcile their differences and met a gruesome ending!

The success of Julius Caesar was the main focus for topic this week, the children wrote interview questions for this historical leader and wrote the answers he would have given too. We were very impressed with how much they learnt about him.

In art we asked the children to follow a drawing tutorial to enable them to create a Roman soldier. They were fantastic as you can see from this wonderful selection. We will continue to draw some more on or return to school as we need to create a Roman Century of 100 soldiers for a classroom display!
