The church gives us Matthew’s story of the transϐigura-tion on this Second Sunday of Lent. We are reminded of our faith, which proclaims resurrection from the dead. The Lenten season will culminate with the Triduum and then Easter Sunday. The transϐiguration gives the disciples and us a foretaste of the kingdom, and a reminder of Jesus’ divine glory. Moses and Elijah represent the Law and the Prophets. These two majestic ϐigures in Israelite history each received a revelation from God on Mount Horeb (Sinai). Together they stand as pillars of Judaism, which Jesus himself fulϐills. Peter, as spokesperson for the group, expresses a desire to build three tents, if you wish. This nod to Jesus is a Matthean addition, absent in Mark. By placing this conditional phrase on the lips of Peter, his boldness is subtly subdued. Before Peter can ϐinish, the divine presence is made manifest in the cloud and the heavenly voice. The disciples hear the words that accompanied Jesus at his own baptism: This is my
beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Only now,
the imperative phrase listen to him is added. The disciples react with fear, falling prostrate and worshiping. Only by the touch of Jesus are they raised up again, to ϐind that they are alone with him. The vision is no more. This remarkable event surely emboldened the disciples in their faith, while it also seized them with fear. This mountaintop experience meant even more after the resurrection when the words of Jesus became clear. The gospel today reminds us of our ultimate end, which is to be with Jesus in the heavenly realm. With such knowledge, cares of the world may wash away. Even a desire to commemorate such an event, as Peter desired to build three tents, are as nothing when compared to the experience itself. We have a foreshadowing of eternal glory. Let us continue to follow Jesus down the mountain, learning from him the entire way, knowing that the ultimate resurrection requires undergoing death itself.

CHANGE
Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transϐigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transϐigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Season Begins Wednesday, February 26 & Ends Easter Sunday
During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to practice self-control through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reϐlection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).Lenten Activities, Important Dates & Reminders

Divine Mercy Sunday
The Second Sunday of Easter, April 19th, 2020, is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday or Feast of Mercy. This year in observance, we will celebrate by gathering at 2:30 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church for the veneration of the image of Divine Mercy. At the three o'clock hour of Great Mercy, we will sing the Divine Mercy Chaplet accompanied by vocalist and pianist. In preparation and to ϐittingly observe the Feast of Mercy, we are encouraged to follow the seven guidelines given to us through a message to St. Faustina on Feb. 22, 1931, by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In addition to the guidelines is a nine day novena of prayer which will be independently recited beginning on Good Friday till the following Saturday, leading us to the Feast of Mercy. Our Merciful Savior has given us new channels for the outpouring of His grace. More information on the Feast of Mercy, the Novena, the Chaplet, the image, the three o'clock hour of Great Mercy, and the seven guidelines will be posted in our church bulletin in these next few weeks leading up to Divine Mercy Sunday.
