Installing Foglight for SQL Server
Foglight for SQL Server is Quest Software's powerful diagnostic and problem resolution tool for Microsoft SQL Server databases. This Foglight cartridge delivers a global view that provides a visual instance health check, and enables a drill-down style diagnostic workflow to investigate the performance of monitored SQL Server instances and databases.
Before starting the installation of Foglight for SQL Server, ensure that the following conditions are met:
• Use a supported system and platform
Foglight for SQL Server's system requirements and supported platforms are identical to those of the Foglight Management Server. For details, see the Foglight System Requirements and Platform Support Guide.
• Use a Foglight license that allows installing cartridges
Ensure that the Foglight license used allows cartridge installation, otherwise the installation wizard cannot proceed beyond the Management Server License screen.
As Foglight for SQL Server runs on Foglight Management Server, Foglight Management Server must be installed prior to installing this cartridge. The following requirements are relevant only if you plan to install a new Foglight Management Server:
• A clean computer (without a pre-installed Foglight Management Server or Foglight Agent Manager).
• Available ports, as follows: • Cluster mcast port 45566 • HA JNDI RMI port 1101 • HA JNDI JNP port 1100
• HA JRMP invoker port 4447 • HA pooled invoker port 4446 • HA JNDI UDPGroup port 1102 • HTTP port 8080
• HTTPS SSL port 8443 • JNDI RMI port 1098 • JNDI JNP port 1099 • JRMP invoker port 4444 • ORB (IIOP) 3528
• ORB (IIOP) SSL port 3529 • Sufficient disk space.
• A user with sufficient permissions (administrator privileges). For details, see Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide.
• Use an available external database.
If you plan to install the Foglight Management Server on a database other than the one embedded in the installation package, ensure that the specified database is up and running.
Note For further information about Foglight for SQL Server, please see SupportLink, Quest Support’s website, under https://support.quest.com.

Troubleshooting
Error Message Solution
No installation file was provided. Please specify the location of the Foglight Management Server installation file.
The Foglight Management Server installation file field is blank. Enter the exact location of the installation file in this field, either by clicking
Browse or by typing the path manually.
The installation cannot find the Foglight Management Server installation file in the specified path.
The path specified for the installation file is incorrect.
Specify the path that contains the Foglight Management Server installation file.
The installation cannot find the Foglight Management Server Installation file in the path specified. Please specify a file and not a directory.
The path entered in the Foglight Management Server installation file field does not include the specific name of the installation file.
Enter the exact file name of the installation file, either by clicking Browse or by typing the path manually. Verify that you entered the full path, including the file name (for example:
c:\temp\Foglight-5-5-5-install-windows-ia32.exe) and not only the directory (for
example: c:\temp).
The installation requires ZZ MB of free space while only XX MB is available.
Please free at least YY MB of space.
The directory specified for installing the Foglight Management Server does not contain enough free space. This message indicates that instead of the amount of free space required for the installation (represented by ZZ MB in the Error Message column), only a smaller amount (represented by XX MB) is available.
To proceed with the installation, free up the amount of space indicated in the error message (represented by YY MB) and retry the installation operation.

Glossary
Automatic Discovery
Automatic Discovery, carried out via a database discovery wizard, is a one-time, intuitive method for adding and discovering all of the database instances within a user-specified range, and then configuring these instances to be monitored.
Automatic Discovery is enabled in the Foglight for SQL Server and Foglight for Oracle cartridges, whose installation packages include also the Automatic Discovery cartridge.
Cartridge
Cartridges extend the functionality of Foglight and are installed on the Foglight Management Server. A cartridge contains one or more components, such as agents for deployment, communication capabilities, and modifications to the way that data is transformed or handled, as well as rules, reports, and views.
Foglight Agent Manager
The Foglight Agent Manager manages certain types of agents installed on monitored hosts. It provides a centralized communications link between the Foglight Management Server and these agents and manages the agents’ life cycles. The Foglight Agent Manager also provides a number of support services such as deployment, upgrade, and the ability to configure agents.
For further details, see the Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide.
Foglight Client
The Foglight Client manages certain types of agents installed on monitored hosts. It provides a centralized communications link between the Foglight Management Server and these agents and manages the agents’ life cycles. The Foglight Client also provides a number of support services such as installation, upgrade, and the ability to configure agents.
For further details, see the Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide.
Foglight Management Server
The Foglight Management Server is the central component of Foglight. The Management Server receives information from agents and makes it available in the browser interface.
The Foglight database stores all system, application, and performance data. Over time, it becomes an invaluable source of historical information for planning future system capacity requirements and for doing point-in-time analysis. The information in the database can also be made available for use in external systems.
The Management Server performs continuous internal monitoring on itself and other Foglight components, as well as on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and the database.
