Backing Up and Restoring Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 2
This document explains how to backup your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 database and restore it from a file-level backup to the same machine. This enables reverting the database to a specific date and time.
Tip
In order to recover from a total loss or to restore the Exchange Server database to a different machine, perform a bare-metal backup and restore. For information, refer to the appliance's User Guide.

If your CTERA Agent is connected to a CTERA appliance, use the following procedures to backup and restore your Exchange Server database.
Backing Up Microsoft Exchange Server
To back up Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 database
1 Right-click on the CTERA Agent tray icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar, and then click Settings.
If you are prompted for a username-password authentication, enter your credentials. The CTERA Agent Manager opens displaying the Control Panel tab.
2 Click the File-level backup tab.

The File-level backup tab appears.
3 In the Applications to Back Up field, click . The Select Applications window opens.

4 Click on the + icons to expand the All applications node, then select the Microsoft
Exchange Writer check box.
Tip
If Microsoft Exchange Writer does not appear in the list of applications, verify that the Exchange Writer is operating correctly, by doing the following:
1. Open the command prompt (by clicking Start > Run and then entering "cmd.exe"). 2. Execute the following command: vssadmin list writers
3. Verify that the state of the writer named "Microsoft Exchange Writer" is "Stable" and there are no errors reported for it.
If the vssadmin command does not list "Microsoft Exchange Writer", refer to the following article to start the Exchange writer service:

5 Click OK.
6 Click Save.
7 Click the Control Panel tab. The Control Panel tab appears.
8 Click Go.
The Microsoft Exchange Server is backed up.
Restoring Microsoft Exchange Server
Tip
This procedure is supported when restoring to the same instance.
Tip
This procedure explains how to restore the entire mailbox datastore.

To restore Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 database
1 Dismount the Exchange Server 2003 datastore you want to restore, by doing the following:
a Open Exchange 2003 System Manager, by clicking Start > All Programs > Microsoft

The Exchange System Manager window opens.
b In the left pane, click on the + icons to expand the nodes and locate the Exchange datastore you want to restore.
c Right-click on the datastore, and then click Dismount Store. A confirmation message appears.

A progress bar appears, and the datastore is dismounted.
2 Open My Computer, navigate to the relevant datastore directory, and either delete all of its content or copy its content to a different location.
By default, datastores are located at C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\datastore-name,
where datastore-name is the name of the datastore.
3 Restore data from the CTERA Agent, by doing the following:
a Right-click on the CTERA Agent tray icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar, and then click Restore.

b Next to the file-level-backup from which you would like to restore the datastore, click

The Restore Files from Backup dialog box opens.
c Specify the datastore path by selecting the relevant check boxes in the left pane.
d Click Next.
The Restore In Progress screen appears with a progress bar.
e Once the restoration is complete, click Finish.
4 Re-mount the datastore, by doing the following:
a Open Exchange 2003 System Manager, by clicking Start > All Programs > Microsoft
Exchange > System Manager.

b In the left pane, click on the + icons to expand the nodes and locate the Exchange datastore you want to restore.
c Right-click on the datastore, and then click Mount Store. A progress bar appears, and the datastore is mounted.
When mounting is complete, a success message appears.

If your CTERA Agent is connected to the CTERA Portal, use the following procedures to backup and restore your Exchange Server database.
Backing Up Microsoft Exchange Server
To back up Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 database
1 Right-click on the CTERA Agent tray icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar, and then click Settings.
If you are prompted for a username-password authentication, enter your credentials. The CTERA Agent Web interface opens in your Web browser, displaying the Control Panel page.
2 In the navigation pane, click Backup Applications.

The Backup Applications page appears.
3 Click on the + icons to expand the All applications node, then select the Microsoft
Exchange Writer check box.
4 Click Save.
5 In the navigation pane, click Control Panel. The Control Panel page appears.

A progress bar appears, and the Microsoft Exchange Server is backed up.

The Restore Files dialog box appears.
d Choose Overwrite the destination file.
e Click Next.
The Wizard Completed screen appears.
f Click Finish.

You can monitor the restoration process from the CTERA Cloud Agent's Web Interface.

Exchange > System Manager.
