Alumni, spouses and guests will enjoy this beautiful boutique hotel nestled in the heart of historic Delray Beach and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is minutes from the beach, steps from tropical gardens and 20 minutes from Palm Beach Airport. There are 140 rooms, so make a week-end adventure of the reunion. The Jackson School of Nursing alumni held a Tea Party and Alumni Reunion on Friday May 15, 2009 in DTC 270. Attendees reminisced and shared their best Jackson School of Nursing stories as they mingled and caught up with each other about their lives. The festivities included delicious hors d’oevres, an auction and door prizes. One attendee from the class of 1948 won one of the grand prizes and this could not have been more fitting. JHS employees who are part of the current Board and pictured above are: Debbie Turbert, RN, MSN; Jane Mass, Sr. VP of JHS Nursing; Nancy

Roberts, RN, MSN and Gardenia Justo, RN, BSN, CE.

3 Ira Clement Clark, under whose leadership Jackson Memorial Hospital grew into

one of the nation’s premier public medical centers died February 7, 2009.

JHS staff paid him tribute as the hospital’s first black president; Clark became one of the most visible and powerful minority executives in South Florida. His single-minded determination to improve Jackson’s services and expand its reach made Clark a hero to many who worked with and for him — and to legions of patients who couldn’t afford decent healthcare.

JACKSON NURSES

COLLABORATE WITH

TAIWAN

In March of this year Ileana Sanz, MSN, ACNP, BC and Salma Hernandez, ACNP, BC were invited by the Dean of the University of Taipei to be ambassadors for the school of nursing in Taipei, Taiwan. They were invited to be guest speakers at one of the largest nursing universities in the world. They were able to share their vast knowledge of Surgical Intensive Care and trauma experiences with over 700 nursing students, nurses, and nurse practitioners. They also participated in developing their new Nurse Practitioner national board exam. The nurse practitioners and nurses from Taipei visited Jackson Health System in 2008 and the nurse practitioners will be returning in September of 2009.

JACKSON GETS

RECOGNITION FROM THE

SOUTH FLORIDA HOSPITAL

NEWS!!

Established in 1992, the world-renowned Ryder Trauma Center is the only certified Level 1 trauma center in south Florida, and one of only three freestanding facilities in the United States designed from the ground up as a trauma center. Each year, the Center treats more than 4,000 patients, including over 200 burn patients, making it one of the busiest trauma centers in the nation. The Center is also a worldwide leader in the treatment and research of trauma, and serves as a role model for other communities. Since 2001, the Center has been used to train all Army medical field personnel before they are deployed to areas of conflict, and nearly 1,000 medical personnel have gone through the program. Center staff also work to prevent trauma through buckle-up seatbelt campaigns, Learn Not to Burn programs and gun safety sessions. Other programs in which the Center participates include the Stop the Violence school program; the ENCARE (Emergency Nurses Cancel Alcohol Related Episodes) designated driver program; the Walk Safe program and Think First Miami, a national brain and spinal cord injury prevention program.

CELEBRATING NURSE WEEK AT JACKSON!

Over 20 professional posters were displayed in the DTC Lobby for Nurse Week this year. The majority of the posters came from Unit Practice Councils highlighting projects they undertook during the past year
