Types of Coders
•
Hospital services coders
– Inpatient coders
– Outpatient coders
• Includes ambulatory surgery, clinics, ancillary departments (e.g., lab, pathology, radiology, emergency department)
– Assign codes for the facility portion of the payment
– Usually employed by the hospital
– Per the AHA, there are about 5700 registered hospitals in the U.S. (based on 2011 data)
Types of Coders
•
Professional services coders
– Assign codes for the physician/professional portion of the payment
– Usually employed by the physician practice, not the hospital
• But don’t forget, hospitals may want to include the physician practices in negotiating education for ICD-10!!!
– Per the Federation of State Medical Boards, there are approximately 850,000 physicians in the U.S. (based on 2010 data)
Two Principal Types of Coding Systems
•
Diagnosis Coding System
– Used to Report Why the Patient Received Health Care Services
• ICD-9-CM Volumes 1-2
•
Procedure Coding Systems
– Used to Describe What Services/Items the Patient Received

What To Look For In Education
•
CEUs available for all major credentialing bodies
(AHIMA, AAPC, ACDIS, CME, ANCC) – Number of
credits vary
– Extremely valuable if organization supports coding credential maintenance for employees
– If maintenance is the responsibility of the employee, it will be viewed as an added perk paid for by their organization
•
Instructors who are not sub-contracted out
– Make sure you know who will teach your class
•
Look for a proven track record of providing quality

Professionals
• Fear of learning a new coding system (ICD-9 has been used since 1979) – Many contemplate retiring!
• Productivity losses – not as much “memory coding”
• Integration of computer assisted coding (CAC)
– A computer software application that analyzes health care
documents and produces appropriate medical codes for specific phrases and terms within the document
– Can be used to assign ICD-9, CPT and ICD-10 codes
– Coders “audit” the output of the CAC to determine accuracy
– Advantages over manual coding
• Increased productivity and efficiency in coding
• Consistent application of coding rules
• However, the cost of the software and the increased potential for errors are potentially detrimental
Challenges Facing Coding Professionals
with ICD-10
•
Increased need for understanding HOW procedures are
performed due to added details in the ICD-10-PCS codes
•
Some coders lack formal training in coding and
anatomy/physiology because they were trained “OJT” (on
the job).
•
Dual coding – Many will have to code in both 9 and
ICD-10 for 6+ months prior to ICD-ICD-10 implementation date
•
Ensuring documentation supports the detail provided in
Why Choose HCPro?

Why Choose HCPro?
•
CEUs available for all major credentialing bodies
(AHIMA, AAPC, ACDIS, CME, ANCC) – Number of
credits vary
– Extremely valuable if your organization supports coding credential maintenance for employees saves $$
– If maintenance is the responsibility of the employees, it will be viewed as an added perk paid for by their
organization
– Not all companies may be approved by both AHIMA and AAPC (especially if they plan to present canned
materials from AHIMA “Train the Trainer programs)
– We also provide continuing education through Justcoding.com
Why Choose HCPro?
• Convenience - we come to you!
– No travel costs for attendees
– Planned on dates you choose

• Don’t forget travel costs! (+$1500-2000/pp - 5 day class)
– The more people you have to train the more cost effective it can become!
• Consistent message in coding training across all departments
Educational Content
•
Our educational content is developed as “rules-based”
learning
– Using recognized source authorities such as the Official
Guidelines for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Coding Guidelines
– Modules are created in an intensive learning format to maximize comprehension of complex topics.
• Traditionally, the modules are arranged with broader concepts and then progressively narrow to more specific ones
– For example, ICD-10-CM as a systemSpecific conventions applicable to the whole manual Coding issues specific to the each chapter within the manual.
Educational Content
•
We “teach then test” in a step by step manner
– Coding is an activity therefore learning is not truly experienced without doing the activity
– Each module teaches a set of concepts
• During the modules there are various examples to code as a group so that everyone stays engaged
• At the end of each module we also ask questions related to those concepts to measure comprehension (completed individually)
• Increasing in complexity throughout the course
– Example: Correctly assign CM codes, then ICD-10-PCS, then both (outpatient and inpatient)
Educational Content
•
How can we make it specific to our organization rather
than general training?
– All of our ICD-10 boot camps are really generalized training (but in varying intensities/length)
• Generalized – not specific to any one organization
• Customized – elements added that are solely directed or structured around one organization
Educational Content
•
Customization Suggestions
– How can you customize for us?
• CCBC-ICD-10 CM only: 2 day live class
– Custom ½ day add-on that uses the facility’s records for a mini- “lab” coding ICD-10-CM. Need about 50 records.
• CCBC-ICD-10 CM/PCS: 4.5 day live class
– Custom ½ day add-on that uses the facility’s inpatient records for a mini- “lab” coding ICD-10-CM/PCS. Need about 5-7
