INSIDE THE GUIDE: Hiring Tips, Compensation Data, and Employment Survey Results
THE EMPLOYMENT FORECAST THROUGH 2022
According to the United States Department
of Labor Statistics, employment is projected
to increase 10.8%, or 15.6 million, during
the 2012-2022 decade. During this time,
50.6 million total job openings are
expected. Employment growth has topped
200,000 for most months in 2014 and is
expected to exceed 200,000 a month
into 2015.
Much of the growth is within the skilled trades. In fact, job openings in manufacturing,
production, installation, maintenance, and repair are projected to exceed the supply of
skilled workers by three-to-one by 2021. With this, employers will need to use creative
recruitment tactics to attract top performers.

NINE STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL HIRE
People are a company’s greatest asset.
With this, a strong hiring strategy is key. One
company known for consistently hiring the
best of the best is Google. How do they do
it? According to the book “How Google
Works,” they consult a list of nine “rules” to
ensure each new hire is a good fit.
To put this proven strategy to work within
your organization, find people who:
1.
Are smarter and more knowledgeable than you
2.
Will add value to the product and company culture
3.
Are enthusiastic, self-motivated, and passionate (not people who just want a job)
4.
Will get things done
5.
Inspire and work well with others (not people who prefer to work alone)
6.
Will grow with the team and company
7.
Are well rounded, with unique interests and talents (not people who live only
to work)
8.
Are ethical and communicate openly
9.
Finally, hire
only
when you've found a great candidate. Don't settle for anything less!

WHAT EMPLOYEES WANT
Attracting and retaining employees goes far
beyond a competitive salary and benefits
package. Employees, most notably
Millennials, are looking for something more:
an engaging company culture.
•
Attract employees by living the
company brand and culture
-
Let your company culture shine on
social media
-
Give candidates a glimpse inside your company by sharing a video tour of
your office
•
Retain employees by creating a culture that makes even the most stressful
job enjoyable
-
Hold social events throughout the year
-
Provide meaningful work
-
Back a cause and involve your employees
RAISES ARE RISING
The average raise in base pay in 2015 is
expected to be 3%, up from 2.9% in 2014,
2.8% in 2013 and 2.7% in 2012, according
to Mercer’s 2014/2015 US Compensation
Planning Survey. Salary increases for
top-performing employees, on the other hand,
are forecasted to be 4.8%. As employers
continue to focus on retaining and engaging
high achievers, they are rewarding top
performers (roughly 8% of an organization's
workforce) with incentive programs, profit sharing, team bonuses, and more. While
pay is important, companies are also providing rewards beyond compensation, such
as training and career development.
