FILM PRODUCTION PORTFOLIO REVIEW (Version 1.2)

Because there is a tremendous demand for film production courses, and because there is a limit to the number of people the Film Option can effectively serve, we must use the portfolio process to identify those people who are most likely to benefit from the program. The following are requirements for eligibility and acceptance into the Film Production Option:

• The Film Production Option requires both a financial commitment and a time commitment greater than other CTVA non-production options.

• Candidates must have completed all CTVA Film Production-Provisional Courses with a grade of *'C" or better in ART 250, CTVA 100. 210 and 220, plus a minimum grade of "B-" in CTVA

250, or be in progress for the remaining courses during the semester of submission. II [ERE ARE

NO EXCEPTIONS.

• The student is expected to have official Junior standing by the time he/she enters the Film Production Option (60 units).

• Students who have taken a course at another college that is not recognized by SOLAR as being the equivalent of a required lower division course, must contact the Film Production Option Head, Prof. Nate Thomas (Nate.lhomas@csun.edu). in order to get course substitution approval.

Please provide Prof. Thomas with a course description and syllabus for the course in question. Include any documentation of email correspondence with Prof. Thomas with your portfolio submission.

• It is the students' responsibility to indicate any substitutions or irregularities regarding these requirements on the Film Portfolio application form. If a substitution was accepted by a CTVA faculty member, indicate that person's name on the form as well.

• The best candidates will be able to express themselves well in written form, have something interesting to say that is based on personal life experience, and a demonstration of visual literacy. • Upon acceptance into the Film Production Option, the student is expected to begin his/her

program of study when admitted, and continue without a break in enrollment or attendance until the program is completed. Failure to do so relinquishes your place in the program. If not

accepted into the Film Option, students can submit a portfolio a second time for

consideration in a future semester (Note: No more than 2 total submissions are allowed.)

Applicants will be notified regarding their admission status via email within 3 weeks. The email will be sent to your CSUN email account. If you do not receive an email prior to the mandatory Film

Advisement meeting, please contact the CTVA Main Office to check your status.

Application materials will not be returned, but may be picked-up from the CTVA Office for ON PL MONTI I following notification. Any materials remaining after thai lime will be discarded.

TRANSCRIPT(S): Include a copy of your Degree Progress Report (DPR) from CSUN. Please also provide an unofficial transcript (if one or more of the required prerequisites does not appear

on your DPR) along with a report from wvvw.Assist.org (if you attended a community college within the state of California).

Note: You MUST include your full name, CSUN student identification number, and your phone number on the top of each page submitted.

SHORT ANSWER SECTION: On a separate sheet of paper (numbering each item), answer the following questions with a short statement or short description. Answer all questions. We are looking for answers that help us learn about you, about your interests, and your thinking. We are looking for the ability to communicate fluently, with brevity. Answers should be your own

thoughts and ideas, no longer than 7 sentences. We are NOT looking for any one particular answer or externally referenced sources, such as Google or Wikipedia citations! Instead, we are

looking for well written, thoughtful, intelligent, original, and insightful answers.

1) In the area of literature, name your favorite writer or book. Write a few sentences defending your choice.

2) In the area of fine arts, name your favorite artist or work. Write a few sentences

defending your choice.

3) What is the most important historical event to you? Be sure to explain why you chose that

event.

4) Choose one film and describe how the visual imagery and the sound both work well together collaboratively to tell the story. Be sure to list the film by name.

5) Describe some of the most important attributes and qualities of a film that distinguishes a

really great film from an average to mediocre film.

6) A student film needs to shoot a scene containing dialogue in a moving car. As the

producer of the film, explain what safety concerns you would have.

7) You are the Production Assistant (PA) for a student film, and you arrive at a warehouse

location an hour before the crew and trucks arrive, and find that the building is padlocked. What do you do?

8) Your best friend wants to DP on your film and you don't think they're the best candidate.

What would you do? How would you handle the situation?

9) You are the producer of a senior project and one of the group members is argumentative during meetings and creates tension in the group. Privately, group members complain to

you about this person - some feel threatened by this person's behavior. The group needs

this person's financial contribution to make the film. What would you do? How would you handle the situation?

10) What primary skill area did you choose? What are your personal strengths that make you

a good candidate for this skill area? Describe.

ESSAY SECTION: Write a ONE PAGE essay describing:

• A single personal experience that formed who you are as a person today. (Essay Instructions: ONE PAGE ONLY, single or double spaced, 10 or 12-point font.)

PHOTO-STORY SECTION: This section tests your visual storytelling literacy.

• Create a photo-story containing a character with a problem and a resolution to the

problem.

Use no more than 12 total photographs to tell your story in cinematic terms. Using the images that you have photographed, make 5x7 prints (color or black & white) and mount them on black construction paper (8/4x11), two images per page, inserting them into clear plastic sleeves.

Also write a paragraph summarizing your photo-story. (Note: No guns, knives, or gratuitous violence.)

REQUIRED FORMAT FOR FILM PORTFOLIO SUBMISSIONS

1) 1 inch, 3 Ring Binder/Notebook (No electronic or email submissions accepted.)

2) Tabs identifying each part of the submission, in the same order listed on instruction sheet.

3) Plastic sleeves for each printed page so that the material is VISABLE and

REMOVABLE (use both sides of sleeve, as necessary, keeping like material together).

4) Photo Story section: place written photo story summary in a clear plastic sleeve, followed by 5x7 photos mounted on 8 Vi xll black construction paper, two images per page, each

placed in individual clear plastic sleeves.

CHECK LIST: Your application package should include the following:

• 1 inch, 3 Ring Binder/Notebook to hold all of the written and photographic material. Print

your Name, Student ID #, and phone number on the OUTSIDE of the binder.

• The application form.

• A copy of your CSUN DPR and other transcripts (as required).

• The written responses to questions 1-10. • Written Essay (one page, 10 or 12-point font)

• Photo-story, up to 12 total mounted photographic images (2 images/page)

• Your full name, CSUN student identification number, and your phone number appear on the top of each page submitted.

NOTE: Notification will be emailed to you about three weeks after the deadline date. Please do

not call the office; results of the review will not be given out over the phone. Application
