Our participation in the „berufundfamilie audit“ is designed to create the optimum conditions for employees and Boehringer Ingelheim. It is important to us to know that our staff are content.

The family-oriented activities we offer encourage an atmosphere conducive to dependability and mutual support in a forward-looking company, thus promoting a happy work-life balance.

Career or family? Career and family!

These two areas are growing ever closer together; if we look at working hours alone, the line between work and personal life is becoming increasingly more flexible. We are aware of the changes in the concept of social values and the challenges presen-ted by demographic developments and are keen to see these as an opportunity. We invest great effort in research, development, production and sales worldwide. We are particularly concerned about the health of our employees and their safety at the workplace. Yet, we also give our employees active support in terms of family-related and social affairs in an effort to help continually improve the balance between career and family, be it in terms of child care or caring for family members.

Our family gives us the support we need in our career while our career gives us the support we need in the family. Career and family at once compete and com-plement each other. This is what prompted Boehringer Ingelheim to introduce a range of employee-oriented benefits that help us balance career and family.

Audit: Achieving a balance between career and family

Boehringer Ingelheim is not paying mere lip service when it claims to aim for optimum working conditions for every employee. That is why we take advantage of the tool known as the „berufundfamilie audit“ in an effort to find solutions that meet the individual needs of our staff in terms of working hours, organization of work, human resources development or services for families. Boehringer Ingelheim sees this audit as a strategic management tool and as a serious voluntary commitment to the further development of its family-oriented personnel policy. It helps us select the right approaches and methods to achieve a balance between company requirements and employee satisfaction. This is very important to us because we will only improve by combining efforts.

Flexible working hours

Rigid working hours would seriously hamper many employees. Different personal interests, changes in family circumstances (e.g. children or relatives in need of care) - the flexible working hours at Boehringer Ingelheim allow for all of these.

We want to help motivate our employees to assume responsibility for fulfilling the tasks required of them by organizing their working hours to suit their own per-sonal needs.

Flexi-time, trust-based working hours

Where company requirements allow, employees have very wide scope every day within which to complete their work: Flexi-time with no core time. Trust-based working hours are also possible in some areas. In both cases, employees only have to guarantee that they do their work reliably.

Another possibility is part-time work where company and personal circumstances favour this solution. In view of its family-friendly personnel policy, Boehringer Ingelheim is open to variable working hours-volume, organized according to hours or weekdays.

Telework

Depending on the job profile, we enable employees to move their workplace to their own home. This can be on a full-time basis or employees can split their time between the office and home. The possibility of working from a home office is a re-flection of the trust in responsible employees. And we see this as our way of helping assuage otherwise difficult family situations.

Parental leave

A child is expected and born, changing so much for father and mother. Individual arrangements may be made for parental leave (up to the child‘s third birthday) from full leave to part-time work. We clarify this in personal planning talks - and discuss later reintegration. If required, we also provide regular information and further trai-ning. Employees also remain in touch with the company through access to the Int-ranet. Whether work is completely or partially suspended - young parents can rest assured that their relationship with the company will remain unaffected. Parents on parental leave are not forgotten at Boehringer Ingelheim.

Child care in an emergency Ferienakademie

Our cooperation with external professionals offers free care in the home or at a day-care facility for children from nine weeks of age - immediate assistance that is always welcome.

School holidays – and then what?

The summer holidays can be very long if parents have to return to work after their holiday, but the children are still off for a few weeks yet. We offer an attractive high-standard leisure programme for „Boehringer children“ in the Ferienakademie. While it still allows for fun and entertainment, the focus is on conveying information playfully through courses geared to technical-scientific subjects.

Child care - important chapter in our service for families

Child care plays a vital role when balancing career and family. Boehringer Ingelheim offers a number of services to bring relief.

Well looked after in the crèche

Thanks to the cooperation with the Hospital of the Holy Spirit and the Waldorf Kindergarden in Biberach and with the town of Ingelheim, we can help parents have their children accepted for the crèche. And we do so gladly given the first-class management at both facilities. The crèches offer the best care and facilities possible. The children will love it and the parents can relax and get on with their work.

When the regular child-carer can‘t make it

Illness or exceptional circumstances can suddenly complicate life for anyone. What do parents do if they unexpectedly have problems finding someone to look after their child? Even then, Boehringer does not leave its employees in the lurch.

Dry cleaning and laundry? Just go to the Service Point!

Washing and ironing is not always the preferred after-work activity! Here too, Boehringer Ingelheim aims to make life easier for its employees. They simply have to take their clothes to the Service Point on the company premises and collect them again later: freshly washed, laundered and ironed. Cooperation with professional services guarantees good work.

Invaluable services

At Boehringer Ingelheim, the balance between career and family goes without saying; this prompts us to make day-to-day life easier for our employees through a number of household services. These include take-away meals, dry cleaning and laundry services, relocation assistance, accommodation service and company loans. An appetizing solution: take-away meals from the company

Work commitments also make it difficult to cook for children and other family at home. The take-away meals available from the staff restaurants in Ingelheim and Biberach solve that problem too. Every day, different freshly cooked, packed and chilled meals are available for our employees; the meals then simply have to be reheated at home. This saves so much time and allows you to dish up a tasty meal despite the time constraints.

Building your own house, buying an apartment, decorating, laying down a deposit on a rental, buying a new car - it all costs money and we don‘t always have enough when we need it. We want to stand by our employees here too in order to enable them to enjoy as harmonious a personal environment as possible. Different forms of loans, in part-payments even interest-free, are tailored to suit individual needs.

When things get tight: debt advice service

We also feel welfare includes lending a helping hand when employees are in financial difficulties. The company‘s debt advice service will work closely with employees to find solutions to financial problems and open up new positive perspectives.

Making sure you find accommodation

A good workplace also implies accommodation where you feel at home. Boehringer Ingelheim helps smooth the way, be it with relocation or the search for accommodati-on near the workplace.

Assistance in the search for accommodation

Our company helps employees find accommodation by providing furnished apart-ments and flats until they have found permanent accommodation. These flats can also help temporarily when company employees face an emergency if they are forced to move out of their accommodation unexpectedly. Our in-house Intranet also offers further assistance in the search for accommodation with a list of rentals in the town and surrounding area.

Our relocation service makes everything easier

New employees or employees transferring to another Boehringer site have come to appreciate the company‘s relocation service. Boehringer Ingelheim uses experienced carriers. They guarantee that household effects are moved reliably and punctually from the old to the new address, be it in Germany, Europe or overseas.

When can one benefit from such support?

The Individual Employee Advice Service can help when individual performance within a team begins to fluctuate, in the case of conflict, if one fears colleagues are sick or showing signs of addiction, when staff have to prepare for new tasks and changes, or where stress and mental problems put performance at risk. In many other situations, the Advice Service can help relieve the pressure, for instance on reintegration after illness or in the search for a suitable therapist, clinic or other professional department. The Individual Employee Advice Service is a reflection of the corporate culture of Boehringer Ingelheim

The company endeavours to foster the well-being and contentment of its employees. In addition to other employee-oriented services, the Individual Employee Advice Ser-vice also helps staff cope with work-related or personal crises effectively by lending professional support.

We all live in a world that is constantly changing – both at work and in our private lives – that requires a marked degree of personal stability and mobility. Difficult and critical phases are just as much a part of life as the good times.

Individual solutions

We know how the need for care can cause severe mental strain and time pressure, particularly in light of the different potential degrees of severity. As we aim to balance the needs of our employees with the needs of the job, we are prepared to develop individual solutions which can bring relief for the individual members of staff.

The challenge of caring

The Individual Employee Advice Service at Boehringer Ingelheim includes assistance when it comes to looking after elderly relatives in need of care. A subject that is assuming ever greater significance given that the life expectancy of elderly people continues to increase and almost half of all family members caring for another relative are still working. A relative in need of care can put an enormous strain on the life-work balance. It often happens unexpectedly and can often endure for a very long time. This primarily affects people from middle age on.

We offer our employees assistance with a substantial package of measures. Basic information can be readily accessed in the Intranet under the heading „The 20 most important questions“. We organize intensive seminars at the company on the basic

Importance of family-oriented management

The balance between career and family finds its roots in our Lead & Learn approach to management. The future of the company depends increasingly on the innovation, flexibility, motivation and commitment of our employees. That is why we give top priority to family-oriented management which takes account of the different phases in our employees‘ lives.

Keeping an open mind to our employees‘ individual needs is the concern and commit-ment of our managecommit-ment at all levels. Within their own areas of responsibility, they al-low for the basic conditions enabling staff to balance career and family in the different phases through life. Despite our genuine joint efforts, it will not always be possible to come up with the perfect solution, and company interests will not always be possible to reconcile with employees‘ individual interests.

However, a family-friendly approach combined with a willingness to accept flexible, individual solutions on the one hand and employees committed to the company on the other - that allows for a productive balance between giving and taking, between performance and personal latitude.
