Anderson Valley Element ary School is commit t ed t o all st udent s achieving high levels of academic performance in a pleasant , clean, safe and caring learning environment . T he facult y of Anderson Valley Element ary School t eaches t o high grade level st andards. In addit ion t o t he basic subject s of lit eracy, mat hemat ics, science and social st udies, t he educat ional program includes art , music (bot h choral and inst rument al), physical educat ion, healt h, and t echnological applicat ions. A recent t ext book invent ory show ed t hat all inst ruct ional mat erials are st at e board of educat ion approved w it h current copyright s. Every child is know n by name. T he 20 fully credent ialed t eachers and t he 13 highly qualified inst ruct ional assist ant s est ablish an adult : st udent rat io of 1:10. T he school library has a full-t ime library specialist and t he t echnology /media lab is st affed by a fully credent ialed t eacher. A w ide range of before and aft er school programs provide enrichment and academic support for st udent s. A st at e funded preschool prepares t he youngest members of our school communit y for kindergart en.

Parent collaborat ion is a school dist rict priorit y. Parent t eacher conferences are held t w ice a year. All communicat ion from school t o home is in bot h English and Spanish. Parent involvement is encouraged and parent opinion is respect fully considered. T here are current ly 26 parent s and communit y members w ho volunt eer in t he classrooms on a regular basis. Addit ional parent s and communit y members assist w it h special project s such as reading before school in t he Breakfast Club in t he library, assist ing w it h field t rips, at hlet ic and enrichment act ivit ies. T he School Sit e Council meet s mont hly t o review t he educat ional program and st udent achievement and t o monit or budget s t o support school-w ide goals. T he English Learner Advisory Council meet s mont hly t o advise t he board and administ rat ion on issue pert aining t o English language learners. T he Parent s & T eachers of Anderson Valley group provides t w o children’s book fairs, a holiday craft s event , and raises funds for field t rips and classroom budget s for t he element ary school.

Standardized Testing and Reporting Program

T he St andardized T est ing and Report ing (ST AR) Program consist s of several key component s, including:

California St andards Test s (CSTs), w hich include English-language art s (ELA) and mat hemat ics in grades t w o t hrough eleven; science in grades five, eight , and nine t hrough eleven; and hist ory-social science in grades eight , and nine t hrough eleven.

California Modified Assessment (CMA), an alt ernat e assessment t hat is based on modified achievement st andards in ELA for grades t hree t hrough eleven; mat hemat ics for grades t hree t hrough seven, Algebra I, and Geomet ry; and science in grades five and eight , and Life Science in grade t en. T he CMA is designed t o assess t hose st udent s w hose disabilit ies preclude t hem from achieving grade-level proficiency on an assessment of t he California cont ent st andards w it h or w it hout accommodat ions.

Alt ernat e Performance Assessment (CAPA), includes ELA and mat hemat ics in grades t w o t hrough eleven, and science for grades five, eight , and t en. T he CAPA is given t o t hose st udent s w it h significant cognit ive disabilit ies w hose disabilit ies prevent t hem from t aking eit her t he CST s w it h accommodat ions or modificat ions or t he CMA w it h accommodat ions.

T he assessment s under t he ST AR Program show how w ell st udent s are doing in relat ion t o t he st at e cont ent st andards. On each of t hese assessment s, st udent scores are report ed as performance levels.

Int ervent ions are offered t hroughout t he day as w ell as during t he aft er school program. In addit ion, t he aft er school program offers homew ork club for help w it h homew ork as w ell as enrichment and recreat ional opport unit ies and a healt hy snack.

T here is a cont inuum of counseling services from t he PIP (Primary Int ervent ion Program) a half hour w eekly in t he "playroom" w it h a t rained paraprofessional for children 5 - 8 years old, a ment oring program w it h a Healt h Corps volunt eer and t w o Bilingual MFT providing w eekly counseling.

Migrant Educat ion offers academic support for our 2nd graders w ho are t ransit ioning t o English reading. Breakfast , lunch and a snack of fresh fruit s and veget ables are served t o all children free of charge.
