Primary & Associate Membership

The first member in a household is called a Primary Member. Associate Membership is available to all other persons living in the same residence as the Primary Member. Each Associate Member receives a separate membership card and is entitled to all benefits and services at a reduced rate. Associate Members must select the same coverage (Basic, Plus or Premier) as the Primary Member.

Dues

Upon joining the Club your membership extends for a period of at least twelve months, from the date your dues payment is received through the last date of the month which occurs 12 months later. AAA Plus & AAA Premier benefits become active following a 7-day waiting period. Prior to the expiration date of your membership you will receive an invoice for dues for the subsequent twelve-month period. Renewal membership dues are due prior to the membership expiration date. You are, however, granted a forty-five (45) day grace period during which you are entitled to all of the benefits of membership. Dues payment made during that grace period renews your membership and keeps it in continuous effect for twelve months from the original membership expiration date. Continuous membership results in certain benefits such as eligibility for AAA Plus and AAA Premier membership benefits.

Should you fail to renew your AAA membership, any roadside assistance benefits you obtained during the grace period will be billed to you.

After the conclusion of the grace period, you will not be able to renew your membership. You may, of course, reap-ply for membership, and, if accepted, you will be charged a reenrollment fee and be treated as a new member. Your new membership will start from the date your payment

(6)

is received for a period of twelve months, ending the last date of the month which occurs 12 months later. You will be subject to a 7-day waiting period for AAA Plus or AAA Premier benefits.

Members may request a full refund of membership dues within 30 days of joining AAA, if they have not used Emer-gency Road Service. Cancellations requested more than 30 days after joining AAA are not eligible for refund.

AAA New Jersey Automobile Club reserves the right to can-cel any membership for abuse of its services, at any time.

Types of Membership

Just as your license allows you to drive any car, your AAA membership card covers you even when you are not in your own vehicle. You should carry it with you at all times. All AAA members are entitled to AAA Basic benefits im-mediately upon joining AAA. AAA Basic benefits include certain Emergency Road Services, discounts on retail pur-chases and insurance and travel benefits, and much more. Read through this Membership Handbook for details.

AAA Plus

AAA Plus membership increases your level of protection with enhanced Emergency Road Services. Look for “AAA Plus” throughout this handbook. AAA Plus benefits are available seven days after receipt of payment.

AAA Premier

AAA Premier members have access to AAA’s most compre-hensive package of travel and roadside assistance benefits. AAA Premier membership status entitles you to more per-sonalized services, special discounts, and expanded Emer-gency Road Service. Look for “AAA Premier” throughout this handbook and review the dedicated AAA Premier pages for details. AAA Premier benefits are available seven days after receipt of payment.

For more details on AAA Premier membership benefits, please see pages 21-28.

Student Membership

New Jersey Automobile Club offers reduced rate AAA Basic or AAA Plus memberships to persons age 17-23 living or working in Morris, Essex, or Union Counties. Student members are Primary members and may not carry Associ-ate members. Student members will be billed at full AAA Basic or AAA Plus dues on or following their 24th birthday.

Emergency Road Service (ERS) is an emergency service to be used if your vehicle breaks down unexpectedly, has a flat tire, runs out of fuel, or otherwise malfunctions without warning. It is not a substitute for proper vehicle mainte-nance. ERS is provided by official AAA-affiliated service facilities who are paid by the Club.

Members are entitled to four free Emergency Road Service calls during a membership year. Any member exceeding the maximum number of road service calls, or found to be uti-lizing AAA Emergency Road Service for convenience rather than emergency needs, may be required to pay a commer-cial rate for the service.

Mechanical First Aid

Minor adjustments that will allow your vehicle to proceed safely and that can be completed within a reasonable amount of time at the scene of the breakdown during one service call. If the service technician determines that your vehicle cannot be placed in safe driving condition, tow-ing service will be provided as outlined under the Towtow-ing Services section.

Battery Boost or Replacement

A battery boost will be provided in an attempt to start your vehicle. Our technicians will test your electrical system and replace your battery on the spot if needed. AAA batteries come with a 3-year, free-replacement warranty and 3-year prorated warranty. AAA members receive a $25 discount off retail price. You can get a battery quote in advance online at

AAA.com/BatteryService. Flat Tire

The AAA service technician will remove a flat tire from your vehicle and replace it with your inflated spare. Any tire repairs or extra trips will be at your own expense.

(10)

Fuel Delivery

A supply of fuel, enabling you to reach the nearest service station, will be delivered to your disabled vehicle. You’ll be charged the current pump price for the fuel (no charge for AAA Plus or AAA Premier members). If fuel delivery is not available, your vehicle will be towed to the nearest service facility where you may purchase fuel.

Lockout Service

If your keys are locked in your vehicle, the AAA-affiliated service facility will attempt to gain entry. If your keys are lost, broken, or the service facility cannot gain entry, locksmith service up to $50 ($100 for AAA Plus or AAA Premier mem-bers) or reimbursement for commercial locksmith service up to $50 will be provided.

Extrication/Winching

Your vehicle will be extricated/winched up to 10 feet when it can be safely reached from a normally traveled, established thoroughfare. One technician and one service vehicle (two technicians and two service vehicles are available with AAA Plus or AAA Premier) will be furnished at AAA’s expense. If special equipment, additional manpower or vehicles are required, the associated costs may be at your expense. Due to the nature of the service being provided, members may be asked to sign a damage waiver.

Towing Services

When your vehicle cannot be started or safely driven it will be towed to the ERS facility rendering service or up to three miles (up to 100 miles for AAA Plus or AAA Premier members) from the point of disablement to a destination of your choice, at no charge. AAA Premier members may use one of their eligible service calls to receive one tow of up to 200 miles per household each year. Should you choose to have your vehicle towed beyond the allocated mileage to another destination, a per-mile charge will apply, payable to the driver at time of service. AAA permits one towing service per vehicle disablement.

On certain toll roads, such as the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike, regulations restrict access for road service and/or towing to service facilities under contract with the local toll road authority.

Eligible Vehicles

AAA will provide emergency road service for the following types of vehicles:

• Properly insured and registered 4-wheel motor-driven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or recreational type (with the exception of taxis and limousines) if service can be safely delivered by automobile servicing equipment. • Rented passenger vehicles (except lockout service). • Qualified commercially-plated vehicles.

• Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks (with the exception of cube, dump, and utility body types) if services can be safely delivered by automobile servicing equipment.

(11)

• AAA Plus RV and AAA Premier RV extend coverage to include RV’s, motorcycles, pickup trucks with campers, travel trailers and dual-wheel campers and motor homes (except tire service, extrication, and towing).

• Towing of light duty trailers (except for fifth wheel trail-ers) at your expense if your vehicle requires towing, members may be required to pay for towing the trailer.

Note: The following types of service requests aren’t covered by your membership: services for unregistered/uninsured vehicles; towing from a place of repair or to a salvage yard; police ordered towing due to a traffic violation, abandonment, or infraction of a local ordi-nance; convenience tow (transporting a working vehicle); vehicles not on or adjacent to a paved roadway or surface; vehicles in an unplowed, hazardous, or restricted driveway, parking lot or roadway; and extrication or towing of a vehicle that may cause damage to the service facility’s equipment.

Who is Eligible for Service

You must be a member of AAA at the time the vehicle becomes disabled. You must present a valid AAA member-ship card, photo I.D., vehicle registration, and insurance card to receive service. Members must be with the disabled vehicle and, if towed, must accompany the vehicle to the tow destination. When feasible, the Club will accommodate

members in extenuating circumstances. Remember, AAA

membership covers the member, not the vehicle. If non-members are driving a member’s vehicle, they can be offered service at a commercial rate. Service is not available to non-members when driving a member’s car.

Road/Weather Conditions

During periods of extreme weather or poor road conditions, AAA reserves the right to delay towing or limit towing to the nearest AAA affiliated service facility, or other place of safety. If the vehicle is already in a safe place, AAA reserves the right to dispatch service on a priority system based upon potential danger.

Obtaining Alternate Services

If you have to obtain your own service facility, you are eligible for reimbursement based on the amount the Club would have paid to provide the service.

If you receive service by police order following a vehicle disablement on any road where regulations restrict access for road service or towing to service facilities under contract with the highway authority, reimbursement will be provided for towing to the nearest exit, up to three miles from the point of disablement, or back to the facility that responds to your call. If AAA is not able to provide Emergency Road Service, Basic members are entitled to a refund according to the Basic membership reimbursement schedule for any service that AAA would have provided. The maximum amount allowed on Basic ERS reimbursements is $55.50.

When AAA service is unavailable for AAA Plus or AAA Pre-mier members, AAA will provide reimbursement of prevail-ing commercial rates for up to 100 miles of towprevail-ing.

(12)

To obtain a reimbursement, submit original itemized receipt, a brief explanation of why AAA service was not used, and your membership number within 60 days of the incident to: Emergency Road Service, AAA New Jersey Auto-mobile Club, 1 Hanover Road, P.O. Box 698, Florham Park, NJ 07932-0698.

Liability

Official AAA service facilities have been selected for their ability to provide reliable Emergency Road Service. The Club acts as an agent for members and is not responsible for any damage, injury or loss to member’s property or person resulting from such service.

AAA-affiliated service facilities are required to carry insurance. Any alleged liability or property claim must be presented to the AAA-affiliated service facility involved within 24 hours and prior to any repairs.

How Do You Obtain Emergency Road Service?

If the vehicle you’re in is disabled anywhere in the U.S. or

Canada, call (800) AAA-HELP or visit AAA.com/ERS.

You can also obtain ERS on your handheld device using the AAA Roadside app or AAA.mobi. Please be advised that call-ing our offices will only delay your request.

When you call for Emergency Road Service, please be pre-pared to provide the following information:

• Club code number “074” • Membership number • Name

• Your exact location

• Year, make, model and color of your vehicle • License plate number

• Telephone number where you can be reached. Telephone calls are recorded and monitored.

After contacting us, remain with or in sight of your vehicle un-til help arrives. If you’re able to start your vehicle before help arrives, please call AAA to cancel your request. The next mem-ber waiting for service will appreciate your consideration.

Trip Interruption Protection

AAA Basic & AAA Plus

You must: (1) report the accident to police, (2) obtain itemized, paid receipts of your expenses incurred within 72 hours of the accident and (3) submit to the Club (within 60 days) a copy of the police report, a repair bill, and the original itemized receipts.
