Meeting Your educational needs These courses are designed to enhance the skills of those working to promote the prevention of HIV transmission. Each class serves to build knowledge of prevention for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Topics include risk assessments, HIV testing, prevention counseling techniques, harm reduction, communications skills, adult viral hepatitis, tuberculosis (TB) and HIV care and treatment. Our goal is to improve services to our clients and people living with HIV/AIDS by strengthening the capacity of our community partners. accreditation stateMent The University of Maryland, Institute of Human Virology, AIDS Education & Training Center (IHV AETC) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Maryland Nurses Association (MNA), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (MNA Code#PU12-09-531-531). The Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, Prevention and Health Promotion Administration, Infectious Disease Bureau (PHPA/IDB) offers several other educational and training opportunities throughout the year, such as Training of Trainers. Requests for training should be made by phoning the Infectious Disease Bureau at 410-767-5327.

The IHV AETC is an HIV training and resource center, providing services to the entire State of Maryland, including: clinical consultations, preceptorships and custom designed trainings to fit the needs of providers in a variety of settings. Through education and support the IHV AETC is committed to improving the quality of HIV/AIDS care and improving patient outcomes for persons with HIV. general class inForMation • All class times are 8:30am - 4:30pm. • For each training day there will be a

one hour lunch break (lunch is on your own) and two ten minute breaks. • Come prepared with a pen and paper,

in addition to personal items like bottled water and a sweater. • Please allow adequate time for traffic

and other delays. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early for registration check-in. • On-Site registration is not provided

for any course. Participants must pre-register and pay prior to each scheduled course.

Registration fees for each class include a certificate of attendance. See individual class descriptions for registration costs and discount availability. The IHV AETC currently accepts checks and money orders made payable to University of Maryland.

nurSing/SociAl work ceuS Nursing and social work continuing education credits are offered for an additional fee of $25/day. One day classes offer 6 credits and 2-day classes offer 12 credits. The level I Course (all components) offer 24 credits. Please note that credit will not be given for partial attendance. Total number of CEUs per class are subject to change according to changes in the program agenda. Award of CEUs is dependant on meeting the requirements listed below.

AwArD of certificAteS & coMpletion requireMents Attendance certificates and RN/SW CEU certificates are mailed after each class after verifying participants have met the following criteria:

1. Sign in at the beginning and end of each day;

2. Attend the entire program;

3. Complete the entire evaluation form; 4. Pay all fees;

5. Pass post-course evaluation test (level 1 only).

cancellation policY

Fees are non-refundable. If you need to cancel a registration, contact the course coordinator at least 24 hours in advance and paid fees will be credited toward enrollment in future courses. Failure to cancel a registration within 24 hrs of a scheduled class will result in the loss of paid fees. The IHV AETC reserves the right to cancel any program because of insufficient enrollment or for other administrative reasons. Paid participants will be given a course credit.

2. three days of face-to-face experiential training

completion of all components of this course is required for counselors working at hiv testing sites

supported by PhPA and the baltimore city health Department.

e-leArning comPonent

This online training will review basic information about: HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and other infectious diseases; harm reduction; federal reporting requirements; use of the HIV Testing Encounter Form; Maryland HIV testing regulations and legal issues; Partner Services; and linkage to care.

This component must be completed at least 14 days prior to attending the 3 day face-to-face experiential training. proof of successful

completion of the e-Learning component will be transmitted electronically to the registrar prior to the face-to-face training. anyone arriving at the training site who has not completed the online component, will be asked to leave and may register again. three DAyS of fAce-to-fAce exPerientiAl trAining

Days 1 & 2 of the face-to-face component: Preparation for providing HIV counseling as a part of the Prevention and Health

Promotion Administration (PHPA) and Baltimore City Health Department (HD) publicly-supported HIV Testing Program. Covers principles of effective counseling and their application to HIV counseling, including giving test results and supporting behavior change.

Day 3 of the face-to-face component: Rapid HIV antibody testing. Includes skills needed for administering and interpreting the rapid

test, specific counseling approaches for giving rapid results; and quality assurance measures.

target audience

This course is specifically designed for persons who will provide pre and post-test counseling and who will report HIV testing activity to PHPA and the Baltimore City HD. Priority admission is given to HIV counselors in local health departments, federally funded test sites and state institutions that provide HIV prevention and post-test counseling. For individuals doing testing in other settings, priority registration is given to those working in drug treatment centers, correctional facilities, women’s health clinics, mental health facilities and TB clinics.

pass/Fail policY

In order to ensure quality HIV counseling and testing services, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s PHPA has instituted an HIV Counseling and Testing Skills level 1 pass/fail policy. This policy states that an individual MUST pass the level 1 with an overall grade of at least 70%. Participants scoring below 70% will be required to retake the course and pay all relevant fees. Please direct any questions to your PHPA or Baltimore City HD HIV Testing Site Monitor. Counselor numbers will only be issued to those who have completed and passed all components of the HIV Counseling Skills training.

This interactive workshop was developed by the National Network of STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers in conjunction with the AIDS Education Training Centers, the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), regional family planning training programs and local and state health departments. It focuses on how providers can affect the spread of HIV by asking about sexual and injection drug behaviors, screening for both clinical and behavioral risk factors, and intervening by making the appropriate referrals for additional services like partner notification and substance abuse treatment. This workshop will focus on clinical and behavioral strategies for reducing transmission of HIV among clients living with HIV. This workshop targets clinical staff providing direct clinical treatment and is also useful for non-medical providers of prevention services.

This two day program is designed as a follow-up to the HIV Counseling & Testing Skills level 1 course. Skills to support risk-reduction and to equip clients to live well with HIV are reviewed and refreshed. Special attention is given to the importance of addressing substance use with clients in HIV prevention counseling. Topics include: emotional adjustment to HIV diagnosis; effects of commonly used substances on HIV risk behaviors; the process of addiction, and the nature of sex/drug-linked behavior. Techniques for addressing these issues will be practiced as participants work together to strategize approaches to their own, real-life challenging clinical situations. Prerequisite: HIV Counseling & Testing Skills level 1, or a minimum of two years HIV-related counseling experience with approval of supervisor and course faculty.

This two day workshop will provide new and experienced case managers with knowledge and skills necessary to provide

comprehensive case management services. Topics will include case finding and case load management, developing a relationship with boundaries, HIV clinical issues for case managers and case closure. Practical skills building will focus on assessment and documentation skills building, development of a care plan with realistic and attainable goals, and the referral process.

This two day workshop will focus on the most current local and national statistics and treatment opportunities relating to persons with HIV disease and AIDS. Discussions will focus on co-morbidities and related environmental conditions that impact the spread of HIV infection. This workshop is critical for program directors, planners, evaluators and others needing to understand the current level of disease in the community coupled with the need to project what communities are most likely to be impacted in the future.

The All Faith Communities Advancing HIV/AIDS Prevention (AFCAAP) workshop in 2015 will seek to build the capacity of faith leaders to identify, select and implement HIV activities in their places of worship and surrounding communities. The conference sessions will be conducted in a manner that speaks to the cultural and relational needs of persons in faith leadership and those they serve. The conference will also work with faith leaders to appropriately discuss and disseminate information about HIV, STIs, TB and Hepatitis and provide access to local resources where members and the community can receive testing, treatment and care services. The inclusion of hands-on planning activities, work group demonstrations and teach-backs will all serve to make the conference highly interactive and a fast-paced learning experience.

This two day course is designed to help participants convey information and prevention messages about these infections clearly and accurately to individual clients and groups. We will look first at the basics of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tuberculosis (TB) and adult viral hepatitis, including the modes of transmission and the basic classes of HIV antiretrovirals. It will answer questions like, “What do STIs have to do with HIV transmission?”, “How does HCV co-infection impact persons living with HIV?” and “What is TB’s global impact on persons living with HIV?” The second day will focus on building participant prevention and health promotion skills on how to present educational information on HIV and other infectious diseases.

The purpose of this two day training is to give case managers and others who provide client services: an overview of pharmaceutical assistance programs in Maryland; an in-depth review of the programs and processes within MADAP; instruction on how to best complete and submit MADAP applications; an in-depth discussion on the coordination of MADAP benefits with Medicare and other insurance; a review of upcoming changes associated with Health Care Reform and an opportunity to share information and best practices.

In this 2-day course, participants develop greater understanding of their own responses to sexual issues, examine the process of psycho-sexual development and functioning (with an emphasis on how substance use impacts sexual behavior, physiology and HIV risk), and identify challenges to addressing sexuality in the context of recovery work. Participants will also practice approaches to interactions which will facilitate comfort and communication for both counselor and client.
