ENTROWATCH – SOFTWARE INSTALLATION TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
This guide is intended for users who have attempted to install the EntroWatch software package and have encountered errors, lockups, or other issues. In most cases, reattempting installation using the listed steps will result in a clean installation.
The information provided here is not needed if you are beginning a fresh installation on a clean computer. To ensure proper functionality, please check that your system meets the published requirements before launching the installation process.
How To
Install EntroWatch
On Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
This guide explains how to install EntroWatch on a Windows 7 computer. Not all these steps are needed but much of this guide forms a useful reference to understand how EntroWatch works and what its dependencies are. To start with you need some installation media. It is possible that you have a DVD in which case the files should look like the following:
Alternatively you may have downloaded the file as follows:
While the files are being extracted use Windows Explorer and find the following folder:
You should see the folder “RarSFX0”.
The contents of folder can be copied to another folder if needed or preferred.
Now cancel the “Setup” and go through the various steps in this document to prepare to install. If you made a copy of the extracted files you can simply run “Setup.exe” directly from the new folder as shown above.
Step 1 – Remove Previous EntroStar and EntroWatch Parts
Find Programs and Features
Using the Windows Control Panel and open “Programs and Features” as shown below in the two possible views of Control Panel below.
Programs and Features
On a clean computer you should see any one of the items in the list above installed. Start first to remove “EntroStar V1.1.2”.
Click on yes to confirm uninstallation.
You may be prompted to allow the uninstall to run as shown.
Click “Yes” to continue.
Repeat
Now repeat the un-install for the following in turn.
Access System DAU
Click “OK” to automatically close and remove this service from Windows.
Step 2 –Remove SQL Server 2012
Programs and Features
Again from programs and features click on “Microsoft SQL Server 2012…” and remove exactly as shown below (make sure you get the right one!)
Remove SQL Server 2012
Then the following:
Click “OK” to continue…
The following instance should be shown – select “ENTROWATCH_RDQ” if there are more instances.
When the following dialog appears click next….
Now click “Remove” as shown below….
Step 3 – Remove SQL Server 2012 Other Components
Remove the following components in order as shown. You may see the following dialog appear if the component was already removed…
Just ignore this error and click “OK”. Repeat in order as shown…
Step 4 – Remove Any Remaining Database Files
These files may or may not exist depending on the previous install.
Using Windows explorer browse to the folder as shown to find the “DATA” folder within the folder structure of the ENTROWATCH_RDQ server files (usually prefixed as MSSQL…ENTROWATCH_RDQ.)
Accessing this folder may require you to confirm that you have rights and that you are accessing a secure folder. Simply delete the files that have EntroWatch in the name as follows:
EntroWatch.mdf EntroWatch_log.ldf
Step 5 – Check Windows 7
Service Pack 1
Using the Start menu select “Computer” and right click to open properties. The following shows that Server Pack 1 is installed.
Professional or Ultimate
Ensure that the computer is running on Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate and that it is 64 bit.
4GB RAM
Screen Resolution
It is recommended that a minimum display resolution of 1440 x 900 be used for EntroWatch and typically 1600 x 1050 or higher is preferred. Lower resolutions like 1366 x 768 or 1280 x 800 are not recommended.
Step 6 – Local Area Network Dynamic IP Address
EntroWatch cannot work on a computer that has a static IP address.
Go to the Network and Sharing center from the Windows Control Panel. Click on adapter settings and the following window should appear.
You may have several network adapters. Select the one that is enabled and active for the “Local Area Connection”. Right click and open properties and as shown.
Step 7 – This step is optional but recommended
Unless you intend to only install a client and this guide is primarily for installing the first and only EntroWatch system on your network it is a good idea to check if EntroWatch has already been installed as this can prevent a successful install on another computer.
BACNET Browser
On the supplied EntroWatch media look for the folder “BACNET Browser” and launch the program called “Browser.exe”.
When it starts windows will show a firewall warning about accessing the network. Simply click on “Allow access”.
Some of these devices could be “EntroStar” panels and this is good. It means that you have powered up and connected an EntroStar panel to your network.
Go through each device and double-click to drill down to the properties. If a device is found that had the details shown as “DAU” it means you already have an installation of EntroWatch on the network and you will not be able to install another EntroWatch and use the panels on the same network.
Step 7 – Use the supplied Media and install EntroWatch automatically
Use this step if you would like to install EntroWatch automatically and so immediately advance to Step 15. Alternatively if you would like to install manually and follow each of the required pre-requisites you can go to Step 8.
Step 8 - Windows 7 – Check and install .NET Framework 4.5
Check to see if .NET Framework 4.5 is installed and then if not proceed to the EntroWatch media and install from the folder as follows:
D:\ISSetupPrerequisites\{72D7E3D1-C9DF-4FA6-9F9B-4E5117AB2919}
Then open/run the following executable file:
Step 9 – Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86)
Check to see if Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86) is installed and then if not proceed to the EntroWatch media and install from the folder as follows:
D:\ISSetupPrerequisites\{340b0957-35ca-1324-bbc9-ba5db9082dad}
Then open/run the following executable file:
Step 10 – Install SQL Server 2012
Installer
Look on the EntroWatch media and find the following folder:
D:\{67DF1DDB-C3E7-4D6C-AD14-F5698BE86A94}
Then open/run the following executable file:
SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe
Unpacking
SQL Server will take some time (between 2 and 10 minutes depending on your computer’s speed) while the installer unpacks and saves all necessary installation files to your computer.
Confirmation Prompt
When this prompt is shown click on “Yes” to proceed.
When this window appears click on the “New SQL Server…” link highlighted in blue. It will start to prepare for the installation and prompt you to agree to the license terms.
Click “Next” after checking the license terms.
Product Updates
If you are connected to the internet it is possible that SQL install will prompt for product updates as shown.
Feature Selection
SQL Install will prompt you for the options to install – you can select all of these or if you prefer to only install what is needed check the following items as shown.

Select the service called “SQL Server (ENTROWATCH_RDQ)” and then right click to “Restart” the service. If the service restarts successfully proceed to Step 14.
Step 15 – Other EntroWatch Databases on Network
It is possible that other installations of EntroWatch have occurred on the network and other database instances are found.
Start Management Studio
From the “Start” button navigate to the “Programs” and “Microsoft SQL Server 2012”. Then open the program called “SQL Server Management Studio” as shown.
When SQL Server Management Studio starts it should prompt to connect to the database instance as shown.
Select the “Network Servers” tab and check to see if other computers on the network have instances of
“ENTROWATCH_RDQ”. These may not cause a problem but it will show that other computers have been used to install EntroWatch…some care may be needed. It would be advisable to check these computers and remote EntroWatch and remote the EntroWatch SQL instance.
Step 16 – EntroWatch

For each door you can change the name and assign readers as required. When you are satisfied with the setup click on “Next” to continue.
Complete
Step 18 – Using EntroWatch
Home Page
The home page of the EntroWatch interface shows an arrangement of live tiles and if all is well the “Health” tile should be green as shown.
Equipment Page
Step 19 – Rogue Systems
It is important to be aware that attempts to install multiple EntroWatch systems on the same network will not work. It is possible to install a second workstation or client that allows another user to access an existing install, however it is not possible to run two systems side by side on the same network as they will both be fighting for the EntroStar panels.
When the first system is installed and operational and a second system is installed it will not install correctly and the first system will show an alarm/error as can be seen below.
Step 20 – Windows Firewall / BACNET UDP Port 47808
It is important to be careful with third party firewalls or any network equipment that can block access to EntroStar panels.
For correct discovery and operation of EntroStar it is import to ensure that UDP port 47808 is open for inbound and outbound network traffic.
On the EntroStar computer the windows firewall will automatically be configured to allow BACNET discovery and communication with the EntroStar panels as shown below.
First open Windows Firewall using the Windows Control Panel to reveal the following page.
Click on “Advanced settings”.
Select the “Inbound rules” and scroll to show the rules applied by the EntroWatch setup. No changes are needed and this is the normal setup.
Step 21 – If all else fails
If you are still not able to install EntroWatch please obtain the log files and send them to DAQ via email to
Open Windows Explorer and browse to the folder “C:\Users”. Then look for the folder name that corresponds to your Windows login name. So if you login as “RMD” then you should see a folder as shown below “RMD”. Browse into the RMD folder.
Browse to the log folder by typing into the windows explorer bar – you will need to enter the path name because the required folder is hidden as shown below.
Enter the path name so that you access your folder “…\appdata\Local\Temp”.
In this step you should have the “appdata\Local\Temp” folder in view and then you need to click on the column shown as “Date modified” making sure that the most recent files appear at the top of the file list.
The files to copy include the most recent log files shown and typically are:
SqlSetup.Log
SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU_decompression_log.txt
SQLCheckerInstall.log
MSI…log
In the example above the MSI log is shown as “MSI41ec7.log” but on your computer this will be a different name but always be prefixed with “MSI…”.
