What is IT?
Information Technology is innovative solutions that are created every day to fulfil the worlds business and social needs. IT professionals specialize in using computer and telecommunications technology to store, transmit and translate various types of information including audio, visual, textual and numerical. With the recent explosion in Applications Development, the functionality of mobile phones and computers is improving all the time.
Could you imagine a world without Facebook, Twitter or YouTube? What about doing your online banking or checking the weather on your phone?
What is the Insight Into IT programme?
Over the course of four days, this programme will allow students to explore the various exciting careers that are available within the Information Technology sector. The programme will allow you / your students to make an informed decision on their career path, which is so important in today’s competitive world.
Two of the four days will be spent in Queens University Belfast and Ulster University Jordanstown, giving the pupils a taste of what to expect from the various courses available. The other two days will be spent on observational placement in a local IT company in the field of the student’s choice. This will give the students a chance to meet role models and discuss various career options.

What are the areas of IT that the programme offers?
There are several aspects to IT which range from Software Engineering to Mobile Applications Development.
Software Development
Responsible for analysing and creating a solution for a business’ need. This can include work or play and could range from Accounting Software to the creation of an online server to host online multiplayer gaming.
Network Engineering
A network specialist will typically look after a network within a business which could include anything from 10 computers to 1000. They will generally be protecting the network from various attacks from malware and viruses. This requires constant attention in high pressure environments.
Database Administration
Creation and maintenance of databases which hold vast amounts of information. This makes information much easier to search through. Examples of this include the Google search engine facilities or, on a smaller scale, a company database which holds contact details for clients.
Business Analysts
Responsible for analysing the businesses needs and making changes that will streamline the performance accordingly. They will then co-ordinate the retraining of a workforce if there was a large scale overhaul, known as change management.
Web Development
Creation of online content such as websites for example Facebook / BBC News / Santander Online Banking. Can serve many different purposes including social media, marketing, news, banking and sales.
Mobile Applications Development
Applications designed for use on mobiles and tablets for various uses including Games, Banking, and News etc. This is a rapidly growing area of Information Technology with over 1.5 million apps now available over the various formats.
Who Can Apply?
Applications will be open to Lower Sixth students who are currently studying ICT, Software Systems Development, Maths or Physics at A Level. Students must also have an interest in a career in the IT sector.

Sentinus is the home of STEM outreach in
Northern Ireland, engaging more the 60,000
young people each year, in programmes designed
to excite and enthuse them about science,
technology, engineering and maths, support their
development and enhance their life skills.
Working with every post-primary school and about 450 primary schools each year, and linking with business and industry, the organisation supports classroom learning through engagement in activities which demonstrate the relevance of the STEM subjects in the work place. Sentinus activities include:
• Research & development projects; • Research placements and bursaries; • Insight and careers programmes; • STEM roadshows;
• STEM workshops;
• STEM Awards, competitions and celebration events; • STEM role model programmes.
To support these programmes, Sentinus uses more than 740 Sentinus Ambassadors from business and industry, academia and public sector organisations. These trained ambassadors bring the STEM subjects alive for the young people and provide opportunities for pupils to experience the excitement of STEM in the workplace.
