Just as our Blessed Mother Mary and the Evangelist, called John, came together at the foot of

the Cross to serve Christ crucified, so also do the parish families bearing their names come

together to serve God by serving each other and all who make up the Body of The Risen Lord.

St. Mary’s Conference

Each year, as the Christmas

season approaches, we ask

parishioners to consider

making a charitable

donation to the Saint

Vincent de Paul Society.

Your past generosity has

helped our dedicated members provide

financial assistance to our needy neighbors in

the parish community. Our financial report

published annually in the bulletin shows the

extent of our work in the parish and how your

donations are spent.

The pandemic has affected all our lives but

impacted individuals working in restaurants,

travel, entertainment, sports and retail

industries disproportionately. Many of the

rent and utility moratoriums as well as

extended unemployment benefits have ended

disrupting family budgets. Our society has

received increasing requests for food

assistance and provides gift certificates to

local supermarkets to provide temporary

relief. We expect this trend to continue well

into 2021. Over the holidays, our society will

provide vouchers to struggling individuals and

families to buy food and gifts. When our

society cannot handle individual requests, we

provide information about food pantries,

food programs, fuel and rent assistance, and

social services. We also offer and suggest

prayer to ask God for the strength to cope

with their crises.

Your contributions help us make a difference

in people’s lives, so we ask for your continued

support. You may mail a check made out to

“St. Mary’s SVdP” to the church offices at

115 Middlesex Street, North Chelmsford, MA

01863, place an envelope in the drop boxes

that are located at the entrance of each

church, or drop off into the black box located

at the entrance to the parish offices. You may

also donate electronically through the

Online

Giving

link found on the parish website.

We wish you a blessed Christmas and thank

you for your generosity.

Christmas Masses

· You will be unable to attend Mass without a reservation

UNLESS there are seats available. All members of your reservation/party must be present in order to be seated. There will be no ‘saving of seats’ permitted.

· Arrive 15-30 minutes prior to the start of Mass. Latecomers

will NOT be permitted into the church.

· **IMPORTANT** If those with a Mass reservation have not

arrived within 10 minutes prior to the start of Mass, we have no choice but to assume that you will not be attending Mass, and your seats will be given to those who have arrived without a reservation. The reason for this is our need to keep the Mass schedule flowing in a timely manner, especially since our 6 Christmas Eve Masses are being celebrated 1 hour apart from each other.

· You will be seated according to the mapping knowledge of

our trained ushers. Please be aware that you will be unable to choose where you sit.

· Per the Board of Health, only members living in the same

household will be permitted to sit with one another

· We will most likely require the use of the hall for overflow

seating. This will NOT be a separate celebration, but rather an on-screen projection of the upstairs celebration. Eucharistic Ministers will distribute communion in the hall.

· To allow for proper ventilation, windows will be open, so be

sure to dress warmly.

Support St. Mary and St. John Parishes

with an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) before December 31, 2020

People who are 70½ or older and have traditional IRAs may use them to make charitable gifts in 2020, even though an RMD is not required this year. Both convenient and tax-advantaged, a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from an IRA allows a donor to

direct pre-tax assets to charitable organizations, like St. Mary’s or St. John’s, without incurring

any tax. The charitable distribution is not recognized as income, so donors receive a tax benefit regardless of whether they itemize. Gifts of any amount, up to a ceiling of $100,000 per IRA plan owner per calendar year, may be made this way.

Another reason to consider a QCD is that it can provide a way to reduce the balance in IRAs so that future RMD income may be reduced, minimizing exposure to increased Medicare premiums and other tax issues.

As we need to keep the finances separate, when making a gift, please be sure to indicate to which parish, St. Mary or St. John, you would like your gift processed.

Your generosity will help St. Mary or St. John to continue building the programs and ministries for the present and future growth of our faith communities. Please feel free to contact your financial advisor for additional information about using your IRA to make a gift to your parish.

All monies collected at the Christmas Masses will support the retirement, medical, and financial needs of our priests in the Archdiocese of Boston. On behalf of our priests, like our very own Fr. Colletti, we thank you in advance for your generosity. For more information, or to donate on line, please visit www.clergytrust.org.

When I was a kid I worked at Mars Bargainland as a maintenance person. And I remember the first week in November the Christmas decora!ons would go up and the Christmas music would start. I always found it a li%le absurd that it started that early. And honestly, I quickly learned to tune out the music. I love Christmas music but two months of the same songs in the same order could be torture if you constantly pay a%en!on to it. And inevitably, people would begin to complain about the whole situa!on. Some!mes Christmas can get lost in the “Christmas Wars.” What I mean is—do you say “Merry Christmas” or

“Happy Holidays”. When do you put up your decora!ons and when do you take them down? How much !me do you spend on presents and how much !me do you spend on the religious stuff? Is your favorite part of Christmas secular or religious? And so on. I think you get the point. For me, the power of this celebra!on is discovered in its simplicity. It is so easy to get caught up in the trappings of the season, no ma%er what side of the “wars” you fall on.

The power of Christmas for me can never be taken away or lost by what others may or may not do. I love the celebra!on of Christmas for the simple reason that each year I am reminded of the depth of love that God has for me. “God so loved the world that He sent his only Son, not to condemn the world but that it might be saved.” It is so easy to focus on all the things that are wrong in the world. It is so easy to focus on the things that we disagree about. It is so easy to focus on how “wrong”

other people are in their beliefs and ideas. It is so easy to focus on what separates us and makes us different. It is so easy to forget that ul!mately we are all in the same boat.

Let us ponder the meaning of the Christmas Gospel:

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

All things came to be through him,

and without him nothing came to be.

What came to be

through him was life,

and this life was the light of the human race.

the light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has not overcome it.

But to those who did accept him,

he gave power to become children of God,

to those who believe in his name,

who were born not by natural generation

nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision,

but of God.

And the Word became flesh

and made his dwelling among us,

and we saw his glory,

the glory as of the Father’s only Son,

full of grace and truth.

Christ came to bring his light into the world. He came to bring the very presence of the living God into our midst. He came to walk our walk and to experience life as we experience it. He came to bring God’s grace into our lives. He—the creator and sustainer of all—came that we might have life and have it to the full. Our God came to be one with us in order that we might ul!mately know his love.

Most powerfully, He came in order to die for us. The babe in Bethlehem was born to die. The reality of this day, of this season, is found in the reality of God’s saving love. Christ would experience all we experience and, in that, have the ability to take upon himself all our sins. The deepest meaning of this season is discovered in this essen!al truth. It is not about the “Christmas Wars”. It is about one single truth: our God will go to absurd lengths to demonstrate his love for us; He will do whatever it takes to help us realize how much He loves us.

If you have any ques!ons about anything, please do not hesitate to ask me directly, or email me at [email protected].

Please keep me in your prayers. In Christ,

Fr. Brian

THE GATE OF THE YEAR

No one can say that the year 2020 has been unremarkable or unrememberable. I don’t think that anyone could have imagined what was looming before us as the ball dropped in Times Square last New Year’s Eve. The pandemic, a raucous general election campaign, holidays in confinement, and then—the murder hornets. But it seems as though the hornets were tracked down and dispatched so that at least one thing can be crossed off the list as

‘overcome.’

Here is the thing: for what we have been through and have endured this year, I think it is safe to say that the hand of God has been with us and has guided us through the tumult. I see it everywhere—in the kindnesses people do for others, the phone calls, the creative ways to gather and still be safe. God’s love has permeated this entire year in ways unseen but not entirely unfelt. Surely 2021 will be no different, but hopefully on much more, relieved collective terms. No matter where we are, what we are doing, or what is going on—good, bad, thick or thin— God never has and never will abandon us. Scripture tells

us in Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not

dismayed, for I am thy God, and will still give thee

aid.”

As we make our way into the festive Christmas period under continued altered circumstances, keep these words of scripture in mind. Why else would the good God send a child into the world in a stable crude and bare? Simply because He desires us to be united to Him, heart, body, and soul. He will stop at nothing to draw our hearts to Him. So surely, we will never be abandoned.

In closing, I would like to share a text with you that is always read at this time of year. It’s called “The Gate of the Year.” His Majesty, King George VI of the United Kingdom, famously read these words to his Empire as it stood down the abyss of the Second World War. I truly believe these lines are as important now as they were then:

“And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And He replied: ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.’ So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.”

Wishing you all a blessed Advent and a very Happy Christmas!

PUT YOUR EYES UP

When my oldest son was little, he would come into our bedroom

in the morning and say, “Mama, put your eyes up!” Then he would ask, “What’s our adventure today?” Over the years we

had plenty of adventures, some planned and some not. Some were wonderful experiences and some I would have rather not experienced.

Adventures can be exhilarating but they can also be frightening.

What’s going to happen? There are no precedents, no assurances when things are turned completely upside down. It’s impossible to

imagine what the future will exactly look like. We begin to embrace the adventure when we realize that we must necessarily live with unsettled questions, with not knowing, and that this is how much of life really is.

The Church in her wisdom knows that passing through Advent has all the qualities of such an adventure. Advent is and should be for us a faith adventure. The angel broke the news to Mary, but

announced first: “Do not be afraid.” This is the right counsel for a

faith adventure. Advent is about waiting, being uncertain, and

maybe even being a little fearful of what’s coming. But, it is also

about joy in the journey.

Some days I have no idea where I am going with my day. There is just so much of EVERYTHING that requires my attention that I find myself momentarily paralyzed, trying to discern my priorities for the day. I can chalk it up to small unsubstantial things, but I know in my heart it is because I have lost my focus and let the little fears of life take precedence over the joy of each day. I have lost sight of the grace available to help me focus on things that truly matter. I have lost my sense of adventure.

Jesus’ whole life and ministry is shaped by his profound

awareness of where he must go and what he must do in response to the Father. What does this have to do with the moment we are living right now? We are contending with an ongoing pandemic; we are worried and frightened and overburdened. Many of us are overwhelmed by the amount of focus that this time has demanded. We need more time for prayer and reflection to seek and do the work that God has given us.

Focus and paying attention to our faith life doesn’t mean we

know the way or even the exact outcome. It does mean staying still to hear the voice of God and remembering that God is with us on this adventure. The earliest Christians faced many dangers and had no idea how things would go or where their lives would end up, but they did know they needed to follow Jesus. The same is true for us. After all, God looks always with attention and infinite love at each one of us; we become more like God when we seek to pay similar attention. We need to actively listen to each other and God and seek his will in our lives. That will be our way forward—following Jesus.

This Advent season, as we wrestle with “COVID Fatigue” and all

the fear and frustration of this moment in time, let us remember that the spiritual essence of the season is waiting and paying attention; of looking with patience and hope for the future that God has prepared for all people and the joy that will come.

Rose for Life

Someone special you’d like to honor?

You can do that by having a rose

for Life, contact the parish office.

The suggested offering is $5.00.

St. Mary Memorial Altar Flowers

Parishioners are invited

to donate a floral

displayed on the altar

in memory of, or in

honor of, a loved one.

The requested donation

for an arrangement is

$40, and includes an

acknowledgement in the bulletin. If you

would like to donate altar flowers, call the
