2008 Women’s Soccer Game Notes

Storylines

FOR THE 14TH TIME: The 2008 season marks the 14th season for the Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team. The program was started in 1995 under Paul Scicluna, who was the head coach from 1995-1998. Current head coach Scott Hall has been the coach ever since, entering his 10th year as head coach this season. The program has an all-time record of 130-104-22 in 13 years.

ABOUT THE WOLVERINES: The University of Michigan women’s soccer team has a new look this year, as Greg Ryan is the new coach for U-M. Ryan was previ-ously the U.S. Women’s National Team coach, compiling a 45-1-9 record in three years with the team. Michigan is coming off a 3-9-6 season in 2007, failing to qualify for the Big Ten Conference Tournament. Amanda Bowery is the lead-ing returnlead-ing scorer, havlead-ing scored fi ve goals with two assists last season. The Wolverine’s incoming freshman class was ranked fi rst in the Big Ten and 16th nationally by Soccer Buzz Magazine. The Washtenaw County rivals have met fi ve times, with U-M winning every contest. Before taking on the Eagles, U-M is scheduled to play at Notre Dame, Aug. 22.

SCOUTING THE DONS: IPFW and Eastern Michigan will be facing off for the second consecutive season, with the Eagles winning last season’s contest in Ft. Wayne, Ind., 3-1. IPFW went 1-16-0 last season, defeating Centenary College for its only win on the season. The Mastadons return fi ve starters from last year’s squad, led by Danielle Orlandella, who scored three goals with one assist in 2007. Head coach Margaret Saurin is in her second year leading the Dons, be-coming only the second coach in program history. She is currently the NCAA record holder for assists in a career. Before making the journey to Ypsilanti, IPFW has a road contest at Illinois State, Aug. 22, to start the 2008 season.

GAME MOVED TO YPSI: The opening game between Eastern Michigan and the Uni-versity of Michigan was originally scheduled to be played in Ann Arbor, but incomplete construction has forced the change of venue. In addition to moving the contest to Sci-cluna Field, the game time was changed to 1 p.m.

SEASON OPENERS: Since the inception of the women’s soccer program in 1995, the Eagles sport an 8-4-1 mark in season-opening games. From 1996-2001, the Eagles were perfect in season lidlifters, going 6-0 during that span.

CHRISTENSEN TO MISS SEASON: Junior Maggie Christensen will miss the entire 2008 season, due to a knee injury. Christensen injured the knee during the spring sea-son, forcing her to redshirt this season. In 2007, the versatile forward played in all 19 games, scoring a team-high six goals (two game-winners) with two assists en route to earning All-Mid-American Conference second team honors.

MAC POLL: In the annual preseason MAC Coaches’ Poll, the Eastern Michigan Univer-sity women’s soccer team was picked to fi nish tied for sixth. Toledo, last season’s tour-nament champions, were picked to win both the regular season and tourtour-nament titles this season. Ball State, the reigning regular season champions, were picked to fi nish second, with Bowling Green, Miami and Ohio placing third, fourth and fi fth, respective-ly. EMU and Northern Illinois tied for sixth, with Central Michigan, Kent State, Buff alo, Akron and Western Michigan rounding out the 2008 poll.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team will be keep-ing its bags packed throughout the non-conference portion of the season. The Eagles play their fi rst two games of the 2008 season at home, but those are the only non-conference home games on the slate. EMU will stay in-state with games against Detroit (Sept. 2) and Michigan State (Sept. 5), before heading out of the Great Lakes State for fi ve straight contests. A quick trip to Illinois to take on the Panthers of Eastern Illinois (Sept. 7) is scheduled before the Eagles head to sunny Florida for contests against Mi-ami (Sept. 12) and Florida Atlantic (Sept. 14). EMU wraps up the non-conference sched-ule with a two-game trip to the Hoosier state against Indiana State (Sept. 19) and IUPUI (Sept. 21). After seven straight games on the road, the Eagles open up conference ac-tion at Scicluna Field.

COMING BACK FOR MORE: Despite losing seven seniors from last year’s squad, the Eagles bring back the top four point scorers from last season. Ashley Rodrigues (16 points), Maggie Christensen (14 points), Stephanie Janssens (14 points) and Katie Lozar (six points) all return for 2008. The 2007 senior class totaled only eight points last season, giving the Eagles a veteran presence on the off ensive side of the ball this year.

Head Coach Scott Hall

The countdown to 100 wins is on for 10th year head coach Scott Hall. With a career record of 92-72-20, Hall is only eight wins away from hitting the century mark. He would become only the second active Mid-American Conference coach with 100 wins at a MAC institution, joining

Miami’s Bobby Kramig in the exclusive club.

Since Hall took over the program in 1999, he has led the Eagles to two regular season MAC Championships (1999 and 2003), includ-ing a tournament title and NCAA berth in 1999. He has been named Coach of the Year twice, in 1999 and 2001. He has coached two MAC Players of the Year, 37 Conference selections, 40 Academic All-MAC picks and seven All-Great Lakes region performers.

Hall has been with the program since its inception in 1995, serv-ing as an assistant coach under Paul Scicluna. After Scicluna’s tragic death in the fall of 1998, Hall has been the only other head coach for the Eagles. He has four double-digit win seasons to his credit, includ-ing two 10-win MAC campaigns.

STRONG IN GOAL: An injury forced Monique Budani to miss the entire 2007 injury, paving the way for Maggie Manville to take over in goal. Manville delivered for the Eagles, compiling a 1.04 goals against average, en route to earning All-Mid-Amer-ican Conference freshman team honors. Budani, the starter in goal from 2006, sports a 1.10 career goals against average. Head coach Scott Hall expects a spirited competition between the two, helping both players improve.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: With seven seniors gone from last year’s team, the freshman class of 2008 has an opportunity to play right away. Six freshmen join three redshirt freshmen hoping to make their mark on the 2008 season. Redshirt freshmen Kaitlin Eh-man, Abby Keener and Brandi Wood join true freshmen Van-essa Atanasoski, Chelsea Detrick, Julie Kaim, Amanda Marsh, Katie Marsh and Katee True as the newcomers this year. SENIOR SEND-OFF: This year’s team features three seniors who will all leave their mark on the EMU program. Katie Zundel has played in 57 games during her career, starting every game she has played in, only missing one game during her tenure. She was selected to the All-MAC Freshman team in 2005 and was a fi rst team selection this past season. A talented defender, Zundel has three goals and fi ve assists during her career. Ashley Upton, also a 2005 All-Freshman selection, has played in 52 games over the past three seasons. Upton has amassed four goals and four assists during her time in the Green and White. Jessica Lathrop has played in 58 games, scoring two goals with one assist. COUNTDOWN TO 100: Head coach Scott Hall is closing in on 100 career victories as he enters his 10th season at the helm of Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer. Since taking over in 1999, Hall has a career record of 92-72-20, only eight wins away from 100. He would become the fi rst coach in school his-tory to hit the century mark in wins and become only the second active Mid-American Conference coach with at least 100 wins at a MAC institution.

ALL-MAC PERFORMERS RETURNING: The Eagles have fi ve All-MAC performers returning from last year’s team that fi n-ished fi fth in the conference. All-MAC Freshman team members Stephanie Janssens and Maggie Manville return, along with fi rst team selections Ashley Rodrigues and Katie Zundel. Ju-nior Maggie Christensen was named to the second team, but will miss the 2008 season.

ALL KNOTTED UP: Last season, the Eagles tied their opponents four times, the most-ever in program history. EMU has had three ties in a season three diff erent times (1999, 2003 and 2004). EAGLES IN THE RECORD BOOK: Several Eagles have etched their name in the record book in various ways. Junior Ashley Rodrigues set the single-game mark for points in a game (7) last season when she tied the single-game record with three goals while also chipping in an assist against Buff alo (10-19-07). Sophomore Stephanie Janssens is second on the all-time list with eight assists in a season. Sophomore Maggie Manville had the second-lowest season goals against average (1.04) in 2007,

while also playing the third-most minutes in EMU history. Junior Maggie Christensen is currently 12th on the all-time career scoring list with 25 points, but will have to wait until 2009 to move up the ladder.

FAIRING WELL AGAINST THE OPPONENTS: Of the 20 op-ponents the Eagles will face this year, EMU has a losing record against only two teams, Michigan and Michigan State. EMU is tied in the all-time series against Bowling Green, Florida Atlantic, Ohio and Western Michigan. The Eagles boast winning records against Akron, Ball State, Buff alo, Central Michigan, Detroit, East-ern Illinois, IPFW, IUPUI, Kent State, Miami, NorthEast-ern Illinois and Toledo. EMU will face off against Indiana State and Miami (Fla.) for the fi rst time in program history.

NEW FACE ON THE SIDELINES: Dan Diac, a former professional goalie, has joined the EMU coaching staff for the 2008 season. Diac has experience coaching with the ODP program, in addi-tion to his playing experience. Joe Malachino, a former volun-teer assistant coach, was named a full-time assistant during the off -season.

EMU SOCCER ON THE WEB: If you can’t make it out to a home game, check out www.emueagles.com for LiveStats at all home games. Go to the women’s soccer page and click on LiveStats for home games to track the Eagles from your computer. The web-site also features up-to-date statistics, stories, game recaps and game notes to help you keep up with EMU.

ALL OVER THE MIDWEST: This year’s women’s soccer team has a large Midwestern presnce, as all but two players hail from ei-ther Michigan, Ohio, Indiana or Illinois. Monique Budani and Ashley Rodrigues are originally from Ontario, while everyone else calls the Midwest home. Of the remaining athletes, 13 come from Michigan, fi ve from Ohio, two from Illinois and one from Indiana.
