July 22, 2014

Morning Program:

Cloud Computing for Lawyers:

Pros, Cons and Ethical Issues

Submitted for 4 General CLE Credits, Including 1 Ethics

You no longer have to purchase software and servers for your office. Today, you can rent software and server access via the Internet thereby avoiding the traditional up-front cost. This process is often referred to as "moving to the cloud." Of course, your client data would also be stored on the rented or hosted servers. In this seminar, we'll explain the associated pros, cons and risks of doing this with your practice. You'll also learn how the Rules of Professional Conduct factor in and the criteria you must satisfy before you can ethically store client data on servers only accessible via the Internet. It is definitely possible for lawyers to get off the treadmill of buying new hardware/software, using it until obsolescence, then buying new hardware/ software again. This seminar will explain how to get there. Finally, you'll learn about the best web-based, legal-specific cloud services including case management, accounting, document assembly, document management, transcription, digital signature services, credit card processing for lawyers, secure file sharing and many more.

Afternoon Program:

Avoiding Malpractice:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

of Legal Technology

Submitted for 4 General CLE Credits, Including 2 Ethics

Legal technology is a double-edged sword in that it can cause malpractice or it can guard against it. Learn how to avoid common mistakes while using technology to your advantage by building malpractice avoidance procedures into your workflow. There is no prerequisite level of technical acumen necessary to understand these concepts, and almost all of them will improve your office’s overall efficiency and level of client service. Most of the top causes for malpractice and grievance issues are related to organization, communication and law office management. As such, they are largely preventable.
