ABEL THE INVISIBLE
Abel was facing the mirror in his room reprimanding himself. He was angry.
“How could you be so irresponsible?” his mother shouted. “You can’t go fishing on Saturday!”
Early that day, he had ran to his classroom in a hurry and was caught unaware by the banana peeling on his way which sent him stumbling infront of his classmates. Everyone laughed.
At dismissal, he knocked over one of the potted plants lining the corridor. His teacher grew impatient and shouted at him.
It seemed that a series of unfortunate events were destined to happen that day.
He was supposed to fetch his younger sister from her classroom. He became preoccupied with the accidents that happened earlier that he totally forgot about his sister. He didn’t want to disobey his mother. He just forgot.
Abel thought everybody disliked him. He thought he was a misfit. Oh how he wished nobody could see him. In that way they can’t shout, scold or laugh at him.
“I want to be invisible!” he cried and curled up in his bed to sleep. He woke up suddenly. He opened his eyes and saw streaks of colored lights entering the window to his bed.
Suddenly, he heard a tiny voice “Don’t be afraid. I am the Wish Fairy,” the voice said.
“You called me in your sleep. I heard your wish and now I am to grant it.”
“You mean you can make me invisible? Impossible?” “Oh no, it’s not! This time not to be seen is to believe!” “Wow, great! But how?”
“Whenever you feel angry, upset, ashamed or excited, just keep quiet, stand still and you’ll change your color to the color of your surrounding and be invisible.” the voice explained.
“Just like a chameleon?”
“Right! Like a chameleon. But I must tell you that this is something you can’t control everytime you get angry, upset or excited.”
“Abel, come on. You’ll be late again for school.” His mother call woke him up . He grew tensed.
She opened the door and stared at the bed. All she could see were the brown blankets and the brown and orange flowers on the pillow case. The bed is empty. She left the room and Noel heard her say to Emily, “Where’s your brother? He is not in his room”
He got up quickly and ran along the bathroom. On the way, he passed his father. He pressed himself against the wall. His father didn’t see him.
In class, Mr. Tomagan wrote some difficult multiplication sums on the board. He was about to ask Abel for the answers but when he looked at Abel’s desk, it was empty. He asked Lito instead, and Lito got them all wrong.
Abel had a wonderful morning. He was looking forward to a more fantastic afternoon because then he had his favorite lessons, English and games.
In English, Miss Del Poso asked who would like to act in a play. Abel was very excited. He stretched his hand high. But his excitement made him change color and disappear. Abel got no part at all.
In games, the same thing happened. Abel wanted to choose the teams. He pushed forward and tried to call out. But the teacher did not hear him or see him against the green wall of the gym. He was so upset.
That evening his mother cooked his favorite dish. Abel became so excited that he disappeared.
Abel went to bed early. He was very unhappy. He didn’t want to be invisible again. Just as he was about to cry, the Wish Fairy spoke.
“What’s the matter, Abel?”
“I don’t want to be invisible anymore! It doesn’t matter even people laugh or shout at me. I don’t want people to ignore me. Do you think I could give it up?”
“Are you sure?” “Yes, Please.”
He woke up with his mother touching his forehead “Mommy,” he called. “Mommy” And he sat up in bed and began to cry.
“What is it?” She reached for him and cuddled him up. “I thought you couldn’t see me. You were ignoring me.”
“I just did not want to shout at you, You were so quiet yesterday, I thought perhaps you were ill.”
Abel was so happy, he hugged and kissed her confused mother.
