GETTING INFORMATION FROM A NEWSPAPER
To many people, the newspaper is part of their daily routine.
Breakfast is not complete without it. Others don’t mind if they hadn’t
seen one or read one.
The newspaper is the source of the latest events or news here
and abroad. They are designed to give us information within a small
space. It has several parts that deal with different subjects matters. It
contains news, horoscope, obituary, movie guides, television guide,
sport page, feature page, editorial page, lifestyle page and other
related things.
In this module you are going to enhance your skill in getting
information from newspaper. Furthermore, you will also learn to
answer who, when, where, why, what and how questions.
Let’s start the activities by answering the Pre-test. Read the
instruction carefully. Don’t forget to write your answers in your
notebook.

Direction: Read the given information about the newspaper, its part and content.
A newspaper is a printed publication, usually published daily or weekly, which reports the latest news of current events and offers opinion on them. It also contains features of human interests, stories and
entertainment.
A newspaper has several sections. These are the news, editorial, business features, and sports sections.
The most important page of the newspaper is the front page. This is the page where the top news is found. It is given the biggest and boldest title or headline called the banner. There are also news pages for foreign news or events.
Next, is the editorial page or sometimes called the opinion page. It contains the opinion or stand of the newspaper staff about the top news or issues. The other columnist also give their views on other important issues. They sometimes support or criticize. They seek to influence or persuade readers to listen to their news and to encourage careful and enlightened about various subjects and issues.
The sports page gives about local sports events as well as foreign sports events. It also talks about sports luminaries, popular players and athletes, coaches, managers and even racehorses.
The obituary page publishes people who passed away for their relatives to know where they lie in state.
The classified ads publish job opportunities. This is where the “HELP WANTED” can be found. People who look for work buy newspapers solely for this page. Buyers and sellers of house and lots or even cars are
advertised here.
The Leisure page advertises about food trips, vacations, nightlife, resorts and hotels.
The entertainment page gives the readers their horoscope for the day, the TV guide, the movie guide and the comic strips. It also gives news about local and foreign movies as well as local and foreign actors and actresses. Sometimes, movie and book reviews are also featured here.
