No. 17: Correspondence from C. H. Davis to Dr. Brown – 27/7/1840

K412

The result of your endeavours to es-cape the Episcopacy excited but little surprise amongst us. We are aware that your learning and ? were, unfortunately for us, so well known and so justly appreciated at Rome as to preclude of our keeping them any longer under a bushel. Were we to complain we might indeed be liable to the imputation self ? but we can hardly be blamed for regretting a loss which may, and I fear, will proved irreparable. Much, however, as your leaving will be felt by the whole community, I am sure there is no one in the House who has more reason to be sorrowful than myself.

? of gratitude which should and I assure you, my Dear L.P., do connect me to you can never be loosened by any action that I could make you. It is with tears in my eyes that I call to mind the many tokens of affection which I have received from you, your fraternal cares for my welfare, your kind and considerate manner of admonishing and correcting one of my many and great defects, but above all, what I can never forget, you having rescued me from the dreadful state into which my own evil dispositions had on more than one occasion, almost precipitated me. I am indeed quite overpowered when I think that I may perhaps again brought to the brink of the same precipice, and may stand in need of that charitable hand to save one from sin. You must know well to what I allude, you must know, although your humility would conceal it from you. That to you I am indebted for any peace of mind, that when reduced to a state of the greatest misery and almost to despair, I had recourse to you. I was received with the feelings of my heart. I should be quite overpowered were I to attempt to tell you by word of mouth how sensible I am of all the affectionate cares and troubles in my regard, and I take this opportunity of ? you – that they are still and even will be fresh in my mind, always reminding one of the love and gratitude I owe you.

Maurus and myself have been applying closely to out Theology during the vacation and we expect that by the end of this week we shall be prepared to answer to the treatises. As the studies commence next week and after that our attention will be ? by them. We should much wish, if you think proper, to present ourselves for Examination either on Saturday or Monday next. You told one that you thought you could get us ordained with 3 treatises. If Dr. Baines? and Dr. Brindle? Should object to admitting us with three, we must put off the preparing any more till next year as it will be utterly impossible to do so during the time of studies. We are both very desirous if our superiors think proper, that we should have the honour of being the subjects for the first exercise of your Episcopal powers.

(17)

[344]

to ordain out of the ? day will also be required. As we feel well assured that the interest of St. Gregory’s is still as dear to you as ever, we shall be perfectly reconciled to whatever course you may think fit to adopt on the subject of our ordination. Mr. Scott thinks of going to Peior Park to see MR. Shattock some day this week, and if you approve of our going for examination, we might accompany him, or if he should not go we could go together…It is a beautiful day and all are busy at the last lot of hay. The end of last week was very infavourable.

All unite in affectionate regards,

Believe one my very dear Lord and Father, Your affectionate Son,
