First United Methodist Christian School
Of Homestead
Dear Parents and Students:
On behalf of First United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Christian
School, I would like to extend a warm welcome to each of you as you join the Falcon
family. It is our mission to provide the very best education to allow all of our students
the opportunity to grow and develop to their maximum potential cognitively, physically,
socially, emotionally and most of all spiritually. We have spent the last 65 years
optimizing our practices in early childhood development, and we take the growth and
development of your precious children very seriously. Every child is made in God’s
image and His love and light is in each and every one of them waiting to be brought out
and cultivated. Therefore, our preschool is exactly that; a school. With an elementary
school that runs one to two years ahead of the public schools, we have high expectations
for our youngest Falcons. Our program is designed to meet them where they are and
prepare them for our Kindergarten program and the rigorous years beyond. The sooner
we are blessed by a child’s presence; the greater effect we can have on his or her success.
We look forward to helping your child become a lifelong learner and follower of Christ.
God has a good plan for each of us. Let us strive to fulfill that good plan by working
hard, displaying good attitudes, being motivated to learn, being submissive to authority
and praying consistently. God is faithful to us! Let us be faithful to Him by doing our
very best to accomplish all He has for us to do! (Colossians 3:16, 17, 23, 24; Romans 12:
1-2; Ecclesiastes 9:10a) May God bless you and your family with your greatest year of
growth and blessing ever!
Always in His service,
Windy Parker
Principal

Philosophy of Christian Education
The differentiation in Christian education from public, secular education is the belief that God exists and that He has made Himself known through the Scriptures and that all knowledge and wisdom finds its beginning in Him.
Christian education is the free and open expression of this belief.
God’s word and work is the central core of Christian education. From this core flow six key principles in carrying out the mission of Christian education.
1. To assist the student in discovery of life purpose
Christian education addresses the questions, “Why am I here?” and “Where am I going?” In assisting students in the process of better understanding him/herself, assessing learning styles, multiple intelligence and learning modalities aide in giving students direction in understanding their unique God-given gifts and talents.
2. To support parent values
The expectation exists that a Christian education experience will support and further develop values that are distinctly faith-based and that contribute to success in the workplace as well as make for a peaceful home. These values include but are not limited to self-discipline, etiquette, manners, character and personal responsibility.
3. To provide a consistent Godly example
Administrative and instructional personnel live by the principles and values of the Scripture. Moral or ethical duplicity is not acceptable. Genuine, truthful behavior is enjoyed among personnel and modeled consistently. As personnel interact with students, attitudes and actions are characterized by empathy, love and care, understanding and accountability.
4. To provide high quality instructional teaching and learning for students
Administration and instructional staff are equipped with relevant technology, on-going professional development and exercise educational best practices thus making decisions that are data driven with school improvement in mind.
5. To provide well balanced co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities for students
Meaningful activities outside the classroom through student interest activities, clubs, sports, field trips, and out of school events enable the student to mature and grow in ways that enhance academic achievement.
6. To provide a safe, clean, pro-social learning environment that attends to all learning domains Domains are the basis for student growth and maturity. Physical development, socio-emotional, cognitive, approaches to learning, language-communication, motor and spiritual development all together contribute to the well-rounded growth of a student.

ACADEMICS/CURRICULUM
First United Methodist Christian School teachers are encouraged to increase and develop a range of lessons and activities that support and enhance the curriculum. Curriculum should be used as a tool that facilitates teaching and learning while preparing our children to be lifelong learners.
FUMCS aligns itself with Florida’s state standards.
ACCREDITATION
Our preschool is fully accredited through Association of Christian Schools International and complies with SACS requirements.
ADMISSIONS
Students are eligible for admission to First United Methodist Christian School without regard to race, creed, color, or national origin. A nonrefundable registration fee is required to secure a spot for your child. Students must reach age requirements by September 1 of the current academic year to be placed in a class. All students must be fully potty trained before beginning school regardless of grade-level.
+Initial grade level placement for preschool students is determined by the child’s date of birth as follows:
Grade Level Date of Birth Range
Beginners September 1, 2017 – March 31, 2018 K3 September 1, 2016 – August 31, 2017 K4 September 1, 2015 – August 31, 2016
Each year, students will be recommended for advancement or retention based on their academic and social-emotional readiness for the next grade level by their teachers. The final decision to advance or retain a child is at the principal’s discretion.
The school reserves the right, at any time, to terminate or suspend the enrollment of any student whose conduct, behavior or performance, or the conduct or behavior of his/her parent falls short of the standards set forth by our school.
Student class placement is at the discretion of the principal.
AFTER SCHOOL CARE/ EARLY BIRD
First United Methodist Christian School offers an After-School Care program. The After-School Care program schedule includes structured activities including arts and crafts, music, and outdoor play.
Preschool is given the choice to register for a half day (8:30 A.M. -12:30 P.M.), school day (8:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.), or full day (8:30 A.M. -6:00 P.M.).
All fees for the After-School Care program are payable on a monthly basis following the same due dates as tuition payments. All students are to be picked up no later than 6:00 P.M. Parents of students picked up after 6:00 P.M. will be charged $1.00 per minute.
Students must be accompanied by a parent or enrolled in a supervised activity or sport to remain on campus after 3:15 P.M. Any unsupervised students will be sent to After School Care.
Children in need of care before school begins may attend our “Early Bird” program Monday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. -8:05 A.M. for a fee of $12.00 per week or $5.00 per day. Students will be dismissed to their classrooms by a staff member at 8:05 A.M.
7
ARRIVAL/DROP OFF PROCEDURES
Students should not arrive earlier than 8:05 A.M. unless they are enrolled in the Early Bird (before-school care) program. The Early Bird program opens at 7:00 A.M. for the convenience of our working parents.
To drop off or pick up your child without leaving your car, enter the driveway on 6th Street and follow along the
south side of the school building. A staff member and student safety patrol will be at the gates from 8:05 A.M. – 8:25 A.M. to greet and assist your child. This is a one-way only driveway. Do not leave your car. This is not a parking area. When leaving the driveway, you will need to make a right turn on to NW 1st Ave. The north circular
drive-thru will be available for handicap morning drop off only between the hours of 7:30 A.M. – 8:25 A.M. If you prefer to escort your child to and from the classroom you may park your car on the north side of the school in the empty lot across from the gate (7th Street), or in the marked spaces along the south side of 7th Avenue facing the
church building. The grassy area on Krome Avenue is also available for parking.
Grades 4 through 8 may use the south side gate for drop off and pick up. Please be advised that the gate will be locked between 8:25 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. and again after 3:15 P.M.
There is no parking on any of the four corners which are located on the west side of the school. This is a violation as per the City of Homestead and they will cite vehicles that violate this ordinance.
Only people on the pick-up list will have access to your child. We will ask for ID if we do not recognize the person. No student will be dismissed to anyone under the age of 16 years old.
Parents who linger on school grounds after picking up their child are responsible to monitor their child’s behavior and abide by the same rules as during the school day.
For the safety of the children and the security of our school campus, all students, parents, visitors and volunteers will enter and exit through the main entrance located on 7th Street. The only exception to this will be those students
being dropped off or picked up by car.
For the safety of the children and the security of our school campus, all students, parents, visitors and volunteers arriving between 8:30 A.M. and 3:00 A.M. will enter and exit through the main entrance (the church/school office) located on 7th Street to check in and receive a visitor’s pass.
Students are to be in their classrooms ready to begin the day promptly at 8:30 A.M. Students arriving after 8:30 A.M. will need to report to the church/school office with a parent to sign in and receive a pass to class. Remember, late arrivals are a disruption for the entire class.
ATTENDANCE
A student must be in school for a minimum of three hours a day in order to receive full day credit. A student must be in school for a minimum of two hours a day in order to receive half-day credit.
Parents are urged to support our goal of perfect attendance for every student. Upon returning to school following an absence, the student must provide the office with a written note signed and dated by a parent/guardian. All absences will require a parental note within 48 hours and will be excused for the following reasons:
Illness of the student
Verifiable medical, dental, or optical appointments (these appointments should be scheduled outside of school hours whenever possible)
Bereavements
Parents are required to provide a doctor’s note for student absences due to illness if a student is out for 3 consecutive days or longer. In the case of an extended illness, or if a student is continually sick and repeatedly absent from school, he or she must be under the supervision of a physician in order to receive an excused absence. All other absences will be counted as unexcused absences. If a student is absent for three consecutive weeks or more due to
8
illness, the family is to arrange for a private tutor or homebound education. Please note that excessive absences may be a contributing factor in the Principal’s decision to retain a student for a year.
Children enrolled in the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program who have excessive absences jeopardize the voucher and the parent would be billed the full tuition for that month. The VPK parent is also the sole responsible party to properly document absences and sign the attendance records in a timely manner. Our attendance records are required by the VPK program in order to receive payment. Not signing in and out consistently can result in a parent being billed for the full tuition due to the VPK program’s refusal to pay.
BIRTHDAYS
Preschool teachers have their own ways of honoring and celebrating student birthdays. Parents are also welcome to bring in either sweet treats (cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc.) or lunch for the class. Sweets should be served during snack time and lunch will be served at noon to allow students who leave at 12:30 the opportunity to participate. Please bring all necessary items such as plates, utensils and napkins with the food. Parents should inform the teacher of their plans by the Tuesday of the week prior to child’s birthday to allow other parents to make appropriate arrangements.
Additional birthday items and events such as piñatas, party favors, games, food or ice cream trucks, or performers should be left for at-home parties. Teachers will assist in handing out invitations for these off-campus events.
BREAKFAST
Students are welcome to eat breakfast during early bird, between 7 A.M. and 8 A.M. Any student arriving after 8 A.M. should have breakfast prior to arriving at school.
The only exception to this is on Tuesday mornings. Our middle school sells doughnuts and drinks in the courtyard. Doughnut sales end at 8:25 A.M. so that students can eat them without taking up instructional time. If the doughnut serves as your child’s breakfast, please arrive with enough time to purchase and consume the doughnuts by 8:30 A.M.
CHAPEL
Chapel is held every week. Chapel helps guide students in the development of their faith in God. Parents are invited to attend any and all chapel presentations.
Chapel Times:
Preschool chapel begins at 10 A.M. every Wednesday.
CHURCH-SCHOOL FACILITIES
All of the church and school buildings are shared and available for both church and school use. Church and school calendars are integrated and coordinated with the church office.
CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT
FUMCS students should strive to exhibit Godly behavior by demonstrating the fruits of the spirit as follows: Love
o “Love your neighbor as yourself” or “do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” o Address and approach staff and classmates with love, respect, and compassion.
Joy
o Joyfully engage in classroom activities. o Praise others as often as is appropriate. Peace
o Be slow to anger and seek to resolve issues as outlined in Matthew 18:15-17
o Understand that being right is not the same as being righteous and the Lord calls us to uphold and demonstrate righteousness, not to prove others wrong.
9
o Accept responsibility when you have made a mistake or done something inappropriate. Peace, growth, and learning are greatly inhibited when someone refuses to take responsibility for his or her own actions. Patience
o Each student is responsible for his or her own words and actions. Having patience with classmates means allowing others to learn, speak, do, perform, etc. at their own individual discretion. In other words, focus on making your own words and actions as Godly as possible.
Kindness
o Use only kind, respectful, appropriate language and intonations in all conversations. o Use your hands to help others when asked to do so.
Goodness
o Goodness is demonstrated in small acts. This means following classroom procedures as you are asked to do.
o Punctuality, preparedness, honesty, respecting other’s property and being on-task are all small acts of goodness.
Faithfulness
o When in doubt, lean on the Lord for guidance. Stop, think, and pray before acting. God has given you parents, teachers, and a network of adults who can help you navigate difficult situations and the “grey areas” of life. If you don’t know how to handle something, go to one of these people and ask for help. Like you, your classmates are not in a position to handle these things or even to know what should be done. Going to other students will likely generate gossip, which is destructive.
Gentleness
o Gentleness is demonstrated through actions as well as words, and both should be used to help or uplift others. If there is no way for you to be either helpful or uplifting, it is best to simply stay silent or walk away from the situation.
Self-Control
o Self-control is demonstrated largely through being aware of the surroundings and what is appropriate in a given environment. Acts of self-control keep us safe.
o Staying with the class, sitting in a seat properly, using tools and implements the way they are intended, discreetly reporting unusual activity, and following lock-down procedures are all examples of strong self-control that can keep everyone involved safer.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Conflict resolution is a practice that will be initiated by the principal in the event of any type of conflict among teachers, staff, parent, and/or students. There are two different kinds of conflict resolution and both will be handled according to Scripture (staff to staff or parent-student-staff relations). In particular, we will abide by Matthew 18:15-17, where the problem will first be dealt with at the individual level. Conflicts arising in the workplace shall be dealt with in Christian love, and while every attempt will be made to resolve the issue, the principal shall have the final say.
Step One - The parent meets privately with the teacher to seek a resolution in a spirit of reconciliation. Step Two - The parent meets with the teacher and principal to seek a resolution in a spirit of reconciliation.
DISCIPLINE STATEMENT
Behavioral training is a shared responsibility between the parents and the school. All discipline will be handled in a tender, loving manner. The approach used is to redirect improper, disruptive, or potentially dangerous behavior before it becomes a problem. If the same disruptive behavior continues, the Principal of the school will assist the parents in finding a learning environment more suitable for the student. (A parent signature is required on the Department of Children and Family enrollment form CVF 5012 indicating you have read our Discipline Statement.)
10
DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Dismissal is at 12:25-12:45 P.M. or 3:00-3:15 P.M. via the drive-through on the south side of the school or by park and retrieve. Additionally, no one 16 years or younger will be allowed to pick up a child.
On early dismissal days (designated on the school’s calendar as well as notifications sent home) please be sure to pick up or make arrangements for your child to be picked up no later than 12:30 P.M. Drive-through and after-care are not available on early dismissal days.

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
Please keep addresses and telephone numbers current. The “approved for pick-up” list must also be kept up to date. Please call the office to add people as needed to the pick-up list for each child. This can be done at any time, even the same day that a child will be picked up by someone new. Office staff will verify the validity of the request to add a new person to the pick-up list before a child is released to the newly added individual. However, WE MUST HAVE THE PERSON’S INFORMATION BEFORE THEY ARRIVE ON CAMPUS to pick a child up and valid

conduct monthly fire drills. It is essential that the building be cleared promptly by the prescribed route when the signal is given. Every room in the school building has an exit route posted by the door.
LOCK DOWN PROCEDURES
In the event of a local emergency (within a one-mile radius), the school will go into CODE YELLOW LOCKDOWN MODE. This means that school personnel will lock and secure all doors and windows and no one is to enter or exit a room once the door is locked. If students are outside at the time the CODE YELLOW is called, they will be taken immediately to the nearest classroom or secured, indoor area (i.e. teacher’s lounge or library) and kept there until an ALL CLEAR is called by administration. During a CODE YELLOW LOCKDOWN, classroom activities should remain as normal as possible within each classroom, but no one is to leave a locked room for any reason.
In the event of an unauthorized individual or other immediate threat on campus (this includes all church and school grounds and buildings), the school will go into a CODE RED LOCKDOWN MODE. This means that all personnel will lock and secure all doors and windows. If students are outside at the time the CODE RED is called, they will be immediately taken to the nearest classroom or secured, indoor area (i.e. teacher’s lounge or library) and kept there until an ALL CLEAR is called by administration. During a CODE RED LOCKDOWN, classroom activities will cease and all students will be instructed on where to stay within the room and to remain quiet. In the event of an emergency, parents/guardians should stay tuned to local emergency broadcasts for additional information.
SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE, PEDESTRIAN, OR ANIMAL
In the event that a student or staff member notices a suspicious vehicle, pedestrian, or animal on 6th Street
or the surrounding areas while occupying the playground or P.E. field (or on 7th Street while occupying the
front courtyard), all students will immediately be taken back to their regular classroom and administration notified. Administration will then investigate and determine if a LOCKDOWN is necessary.
TURKEY POINT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AND STATE OF EMERGENCY PLAN
FUMCS will follow emergency plans dictated by county authorities.
WEATHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURE

CHURCH AND SCHOOL ENDOWMENT FEE
This $150.00 yearly nonrefundable fee per family is due on or before August 1st. This fee is waived for families who
are official members of First United Methodist Church of Homestead as of August 1st. The church welcomes all families
to attend services on Sunday mornings at 9:30 or 10:45 as well as the Spanish service at 6:30 P.M.
* VPK students are exempt from this fee.

K4 students may participate in day field trips. A permission slip as well as the cost of the trip will be required for each child. All events for beginners and K3 classes will be held on campus.
12
GRADING POLICY
Beginner and K3 students do not receive grades or quarterly report cards. Friday work, notes home, or other communication with the teacher are evidence of each child’s abilities and progress throughout the school year. K4 students will be assessed using the VPK assessments. Each time a VPK assessment is given, a copy will be sent home the same way a report card would be sent home for students in elementary school. K4 students will also receive report cards at the end of each semester.
GRADUATION
The K4 classes will partake in a commencement ceremony at the end of the year.
HEALTH POLICY
Florida Statute 232.032 states that any students enrolling in a Florida school must present documentation showing that immunization and health requirements have been met. HRS/DCF Form 680 and other important health information must be on file in the school office on or prior to the first day of school attendance.
If a student becomes ill while in school, parents will immediately be called to come pick up his or her child. The parent will be given a form explaining the child’s symptoms, and the conditions of the child being allowed to return to class. Any child who has experience vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours may not attend class. A child who is on over-the-counter medication to manage symptoms (i.e. a fever reducer such as Tylenol) is NOT considered symptom-free. If a child is sent home with a fever of 100.4 or higher, the parent will be called immediate to pick the child up. The child may return to school after two full days (that means the remainder of the day the child is sent home plus two additional days) and with clearance from a doctor. The doctor’s clearance is required for a child with a fever. Additionally, notice from a doctor does not change any part of the policies or procedures at FUMCS.
Incidents of contagious diseases must be disclosed to the principal for further instruction. Other conditions of serious and contagious nature must be accompanied with a doctor’s note to be allowed back at school.
We encourage parents to check weekly for head lice. In the event your child has head lice, we require that an office staff inspect the child before he or she return to class.
If a doctor has prescribed a medication that needs to be given to a child during school hours, the parent must make arrangements to administer these. The school reserves the right to accept the responsibility for dispensing medication on a case by case basis. If the school agrees to administer a medication it must be a Doctor prescribed medication in the original container with dosages and times clearly labeled. The medication will be administered in the school office. No over the counter medication will be administered.
Please be aware as per the Health Department, no staff member is allowed to heat up a child’s lunch from home.
HEALTH/SAFETY
The school is in compliance with all fire and (DCF) Department of Children and Families regulations and undergoes regular inspections. (Copies of the most recent certificates are posted in the school office.) All staff members are certified in First Aid and CPR.

LUNCH
FUMCS facilitates school lunches through our own approved, local vendors. Orders for school lunches are due by Thursday of the previous week. Parents who choose to provide their child’s lunches should have their child bring his or her lunch at the time of morning arrival. Any student who does not have a lunch in-hand and is not listed on the lunch order by 11 am will have an emergency lunch provided for him or her and charged the regular lunch price plus a $5.00 convenience fee. Parents may also drop off lunches or call and order lunches on their own from Jimmy John’s before 11 am, as we are partnered with them for this. We will not accept any student lunches orders delivered from an outside vendor.
Please clearly label your child’s lunch box on the outside with his or her full name. When packing your child’s lunch, it is recommended that you use an ice pack or thermos. We do not provide refrigeration. Furthermore, please include napkins, utensils, and any other necessary items since the school does not provide these. Please be aware as per Health Department regulations, no staff member can heat up a child’s lunch.
Preschool lunch is from 12:30 P.M. – 1:00 P.M. If you want your child to stay for lunch, you are committing to a school day (8:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.).
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
In the event of a medical emergency, staff member is to contact the office ASAP. If a 911 call is necessary, it should be initiated by the adult witnessing the event. Staff members will provide assistance to the student in the emergency until other rescue personnel arrive. Office staff will call the student’s family and review the student’s medical records for any notes of allergies or medical condition. Accidents require an accident report. Please be aware that all head injuries require a telephone call to the parent. Parents provide the school with accurate records, birth certificate, parent information, and any supporting document that may be helpful in case of emergency.
NAP TIME AND SUPPLIES
Quiet hours are from 1:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M. and are strictly observed. We must request that students in Beginners through K-4 who are left for nap remain until 3:00 P.M.
One small crib blanket, crib pillow, and a small sized stuffed animal may be brought from home to make naptime more comfortable. All items are to be placed inside a plastic bag (we recommend the 10-gallon zip-loc bag) labeled with your child’s full name. All nap items are to be taken home on Friday to be cleaned and brought back on Monday for the week. Every child staying for naptime will have an assigned cot to use for the school year. Cots are cleaned and sanitized with Lysol.

REGISTRATION
Registration for First United Methodist Christian School families is held in February. Open registration will begin in March for new families wishing to enroll students.
A student entering after the school year has begun, shall be required to pay the registration fee, supply and materials fee, and the monthly tuition fee commencing with the first month of attendance. There is no pro-ration for tuition based on actual days of attendance.
If a student withdraws from school, tuition is due for the full month during which the student withdraws. Withdrawal from school must be accomplished by written communication to the school by a parent or guardian. All fees must be paid before school records are released.
Parents who are interested in pursuing the entire K4 program will be asked to pay the fee of $175.00/$225.00 to hold your child’s spot in K4. This fee is nonrefundable. Once classes begin, this amount will be credited to your annual tuition.
SCHOOL BOARD (CSB)
The CSB is the policy making body of the school and is accountable to the Church Council of First Church of Homestead. Administering policies is the direct responsibility of the School Principal.
The CSB is composed of members of the First Church of Homestead, the Pastor and School Principal. All elected officers, Chairperson and Recording Secretary must be members of First Church of Homestead.
The CSB meets monthly and the meeting dates, times, and locations are available in the church and school calendars online. Any member of the FUMCS community may bring their concerns to the CSB during one of these meetings as the first 20 minutes of each meeting is an open session. Arrangements to attend a meeting will be made through the School Principal.

SPIRITUAL GOALS
FUMCS strives to teach the whole child. Under the basis of core belief values, we support the following statements: Teach students about the one living and true God through the teachings of Jesus Christ (Genesis 1:1; Jeremiah 10:10; Timothy 1:17).
Teach students about authority of Scripture, that the Bible is God’s word to us, and is Holy Spirit inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Revelation 22:18-19).
Teach students a biblical worldview that integrates biblical principles in all subject areas (2 Peter 1:3).
Teach students that God is one being in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2; John 4:24; John 3:16; Philippians 2:6).
Teach students to demonstrate God’s love through giving, caring, and sharing the Gospel (Matthew 28:19-20; Matthew 6:19-21).
Work together with the home in a partnership in the God-commissioned responsibility of teaching children (Proverbs 22:6).
Instill Christ-like character in students so that they may project His example (Galatians 5:22-23; Matthew 5:3-11; Mark 8: 34-38).
Create in our students a desire for discipleship (1Peter 3:15; Matthew 4:18-20).
STUDENT RECORDS
A file is maintained on all current students. Each file includes the student application, HRS 680 form, student pick-up list, evacuation form, field trip, receipt acknowledgement for handbook, permission to screen, and pictures/video permission form. An up-to-date parent contact log is kept in case of an emergency. If you have a change of address or telephone number, please inform the office as soon as possible. A cumulative student record is maintained on all students which includes copies of report cards and standardized test scores.
TARDINESS
Students begin their day promptly at 8:30 A.M. All students arriving between 8:30 – 8:35 A.M. are considered tardy and will be marked tardy by the teacher. Students must get a tardy pass from the office if they arrive after 8:35 A.M. Parents are responsible for signing their child in at the school office before going to the classroom if they arrive after 8:35 AM. Any time a student arrives at school late with evidence of a doctor or dental visit, the tardy will be excused. Please be advised that 5 unexcused tardies in a single quarter will result in a 1-day at-home suspension on the next scheduled school day.
