Summer School of Addiction Studies

The Summer School of Addiction Studies (SSAS) builds on 7 decades of

successful education and collaboration and offers students a weeklong

professional development experience. With courses, lectures, workshops,

and other educational experiences to choose from, students may earn

over 50 hours of continuing education credits (CEUs).

In addition to its intensive course load, the school provides daily lectures

on cutting-edge topics (this year focuses on Keeping Practice Relevant).

Evening activities may include events such as candle light meditation

and themed movie and theater nights. SSAS presents the perfect

opportunity to network with other professionals in various fields of

addiction and behavioral health.

Who Should Attend?

Licensed service providers, supervisors, clinicians, students, prevention

specialists, and educators from a wide variety of settings including, but

not limited to, community based organizations, health centers, alcohol

and drug treatment facilities, clinics, hospitals, medical schools,

educational settings, other professional schools, and the armed forces.

The Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs

The Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs (www.jsad.com) is the oldest substance-related journal published in the United States (est. 1940) and is a strong supporter of the Summer School

of Addiction Studies. JSAD is a multidisciplinary journal, publishing both basic and clinical

research on all aspects of the use of, abuse of, and dependence on alcohol, illicit substances, and inhalants; tobacco use and dependence; and the misuse of prescription medication.

Note: Of the overall tuition, $45 is for the journal subscription.

Certified Counselor: Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-Approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. ACEP #6619.

NBCC approved courses qualify for CACD/LCADC recertification in NJ. Drug & Alcohol Counselors:

1. Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies is an NAADAC-Approved Education Provider. Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies meets nationally approved standards of education developed for the alcoholism and drug abuse counseling field. Program participants are assured that the contact hours

or CEUs provided will be accepted toward national credentialing by the NAADAC Certification Commission. Approval #124.

2. Certain courses are approved for renewal (recertification) credits by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ, Inc. Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies. Approval #225.

Social Worker (The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners): This program is approved for social work continuing education hours by Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies in accordance with New Jersey administrative code 13:44G -6.4 and recognized by The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners. Important Notice: Social workers must provide their social work license/certification/registration number and license jurisdiction on the registration form.

COSTS

Tuition - $1,300 if you register by June 1 ($1,350 after June 1). Students register for 2

courses and attend (without limits) lectures, workshops, and other exciting

educational experiences (including FOCUS DAY 15). $150 deposit must accompany

the application.

NOTE: Matriculating students, Rutgers employees, and military personnel may qualify for reduced tuition. Contact us for qualifications.

Attend FOCUS DAY 15 Only - $350. Attendance to all events on Monday, including

the plenary at night.

Housing at The Heldrich Hotel and Conference Center - $810. Monday check-in,

Saturday check-out. Rooms are single occupancy, but double occupancy available

upon request. If additional housing is needed prior to or after Summer School,

contact us for pricing. In addition to the lunch provided, housing includes hot

breakfast and dinner.

Note: Notice of cancellation of housing must be received in writing three weeks prior to the start of Summer School; otherwise, the student may be charged the full amount for housing.

Parking and Dining - Parking, continental breakfast, and lunch are included for all

registrants. Hot breakfast and dinner throughout the week is included for those

staying at The Heldrich and can be purchased on-site for commuters.

Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs - INCLUDED. All paid registrants are given a

1-year subscription to the journal as part of their Summer School registration.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The school assists in the administration of the following scholarships:

(1) Alumni Scholarship (for new and returning students)

(2) Robert N. and Jeanette Cooper Scholarship

(3) Scaife Family Foundation SSAS Medical Student Fellowship

(4) NJ - DMHAS Career Ladder Scholarship (for state employees)

The $150 deposit is REQUIRED with SSAS and scholarship applications. You will have

the option to withdraw without penalty and receive a full refund if you do not receive

a scholarship. See our webpage for full details.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS

Students can earn CEU hours by completing/participating in the following:

FOCUS DAY 15 - 5 CEU hours for attending either track. You must sign in to receive credit. Session 1 - 10 CEU hours after completion. Session runs Tuesday - Saturday.

Session 2 - 10 CEU hours after completion. Session runs Tuesday - Saturday.

Lectures/Workshops - 1 CEU hour per hour attended. You must sign in to receive credit.

FOCUS DAY 15 is the kickoff to the historic Summer School. Held on Monday, July 6, it is

designed to provide all students the opportunity to engage in important and timely

issues essential for Keeping our Practice Relevant. This year highlights:

1. The State of Marijuana

2. The Intersection of Practice and Legality

LECTURE SERIES

Each afternoon, participants choose from different lectures and workshops. The

comprehensive series will reflect this year’s theme of Keeping Practice Relevant,

including topics such as:

• Disparities in Health Care

• Issues of Justice

• Services for the Underserved Population

• Technology Influence on Practice

CEUs are given for each hour attended.

CERTIFICATION

The Summer School offers the educational hours for two certifications. To complete

the hours, the student must register and complete the required courses listed below,

as well as selected lectures (students will be provided with a mandatory schedule).
