Trends

In 2011 we saw the market recover with upward pressure on pay rates and salaries from contractors and permanent candidates respectively. Key drivers for professionals changing jobs are working with cutting edge technologies and salary or contract rate increases.

skills in demand

The 2nd half of 2011 showed a significant increase in jobs in both networking and security. Cisco certifications are essential for any networking position with a minimum of CCNA level. We have also saw an increased demand for candidates with virtualisation experience. With the increase in IT Security outsourcing/assessment, client facing experience is also important. At the more junior end of the market there was a surge in first and second line positions with European languages as more multinationals opened European Shared Services in Ireland. Those who speak German, French, Dutch or a Nordic language can demand a premium.

What do we expect for 2012?

VMWare and other virtualisation

technologies will become more prominent. Experience and certification in this area would be advised as the server migration and consolidation continues from physical to virtual.

In 2011 we saw contractor rates rise and permanent salaries increase but not at the same level.

The development market is buoyant with the hot spots in back-end development – java, .net and Oracle. The first half of 2011 saw one organisation recruit a large amount of QA testers creating a vacuum in the market that has been largely filled by contractors. This led to an increase in rates for this skill. In addition, gaming companies continued to recruit development engineers creating vacancies in the sectors that they have come from. As in other areas of the recruitment market, the financial services and IT consultancy sectors have a strong need for developers as new projects kick off.

What do we expect for 2012?

There is a real shortage of developers in the Irish market, in particular – Java. In the second half of 2011 we saw organisations start to look overseas as they exhausted the Irish candidate pool. With the UK experiencing similar issues, companies are starting to look further afield into Central and Eastern Europe and the economically challenged Mediterranean countries. Towards the end of 2011, companies were sourcing from India once again and with the work permit application process much more fluid than in previous years, we forecast that this trend will continue.

Trends

There was an increase in demand for both PM’s and BA’s in 2011 with the financial services sector reflecting the largest jump. Managed services/IT consultancy were just behind. Salaries and daily rates have remained fairly flat. The good news is that contract durations have increased with a typical contract now 6-12 months compared to 3-6 the previous year. Contract rates have remained fairly static for most Project Managers, although those with niche skills in specific areas such as data centre migration and transition management can command higher rates.

Business Analysts with a financial services background will find that they have multiple opportunities when looking for a new position. BA’s with Agile experience are also in demand.

We have seen a jump in requirements for Service Delivery Managers with ITIL Manager Certification due to the increased number of managed service/outsourced projects. There is also increased demand for PM’s with Java experience.

As customers continue to tighten up compliance and screening processes, it is essential that Project Managers have relevant certification such as Prince 2 and PMP.

What we expect for 2012:

We expect the trend for BA’s and PM’s with financial services experience to continue as more projects kick off in the sector. We also expect the movement towards outsourcing to maintain and this will be reflected in the demand from managed service and IT consultancies.

Trends

Salaries recovered in 2011, following significant decrease in 2008 and 2009 and stabilisation in 2010. Increases in salaries have been as much as 20% on 2010 for board level appointments.

In addition, companies and candidates are looking at the overall package with benefits also becoming more competitive, including an increase in car allowances. For 2011 we saw bonuses return, but they were strictly performance based, rather than guaranteed.

skills in demand

Candidates with multinational experience are in the most demand. Organisations are typically looking for executive hires to have a holistic business and IT track record. These elements include: staff management, change management, recruitment, outsourcing, vendor management, off-shoring, staff development and mergers and acquisitions. Academic qualifications and accreditations are a pre-requisite, with a primary Degree, Masters / MBA and Project Management certification normally a requirement.

What do we expect for 2012?

With the market becoming more robust we expect more movement at the senior level. In 2011 we saw an increase of 78% of candidates from 2010 in the market and that trend is likely to continue in to 2012. With more multinationals setting up in Ireland, this will create movement as they appoint their senior management teams leaving other executive positions to be filled.
