Connect the Dots/Game of Real Life

PURPOSE

The aim of this pro bono opportunity is to provide an avenue for economically disadvantaged students to break the cycle of poverty.

APPROACH

Provide middle school students the knowledge, experiences, vision, motivation and tools to become career and college ready. Methodology includes special in-school topics, after school enrichment activities, career expo and after school classes in ca-reer selection, college planning and financial education. Culmination is participation in the two day, experiential Game of Real Life.

VALUE THAT FPA MEMBERS CAN PROVIDE

Let me count the ways!! We are all about life planning, whether it be money management, investments, insurance, taxes, employee benefits, retirement, or related subjects. Every FPA member brings beneficial knowledge to the table.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Over 100 students from Patrick Henry Middle School began this program in January and will conclude with the Game of Real Life on July 1-2, 2015.

During and after the regular school day, these students will learn about careers, college, life skills and financial “smarts.” Career mentors will enable students to talk with professionals and get a much broader view of what is possible.

Extensive financial education is provided at the conclusion of the spring semester to prepare the students for The Game (and for real life).

The Game of Real Life is an award winning, experiential event which involves students “aging” from 19 to 26 in 1-1/2 hour per year increments while interviewing for jobs, working, going to college, maintaining financial state-ments and participating in activities of daily life (paying bills, paying taxes, buying a car, a house, insurance, etc.).

This program was developed by Financial Mentors of America (FMA) with the intent of having it accepted by Houston area school districts and then beyond Houston. Community involvement is critical (individuals and pro-fessional, business and governmental organizations).

CRITICAL

NEED FOR FINANCIAL AND RELATED PROFESSIONALS

Manage All Aspects of the “Financial Planning Business

FPA Houston will manage the Financial Planning Business for the Game of Real Life on July 1-2. This busi-ness audits student financial statements (cash flow and net worth) for all students throughout the Game. On the first day we will conduct about eight speed interviews per manager, and hire and train our intermediate

school “employees.” The first couple of “years” of life (19 and 20 years of age) will also be experienced. The other six “years of life” and game wrap up will be experienced during the second day.

Throughout the game, we “keep tabs” on our employees but also help them (and other students in the Game) with their financial spreadsheets and questions. We are “working managers.”

(5)

Training for managers will be provided.

Location is Patrick Henry Middle School, 10702 E. Hardy Rd (east of the Hardy Toll Road and south of Little York).

FPA Houston volunteers are welcome to participate both days, one day or any of the four half-day sessions.

Subject Matter Experts

In late-May and early-June FPA volunteers (and others) are needed to train instructors, so they have adequate knowledge in the areas of banking, taxes, insurance, real estate, college funding, car buying, 401(k) and general financial planning.

Many of the instructors will be certified school teachers but there may be other adults or college students partici-pating. Most teachers will need help mastering the financial materials they are being asked to teach.

There may be opportunities for FPA volunteers to actually serving as instructors.

Representing financial planners and issues affecting planner practices are primary objectives of the Financial Planning Association. To enhance our efforts, the FPA-PAC was created as the federally registered political action committee of FPA, the only registered PAC on Capitol Hill representing the interests of the financial planning profession.

By contributing to the FPA-PAC fund, you're helping support candidates for the United States Sen-ate and House of Representatives — primarily incumbents, regardless of political party — who have demonstrated previous support of issues FPA believes critical to advancing the profession.
