THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poul-tice that joins them at the splice must
be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had be-come fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance,
Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES
Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe regarse constante-mente. Los jardineros dicen que esto “teje” el césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede cuando se injerta una rama a un árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe estar hú-medo en todo momento. El agua es lo que mantiene unidas a las células de nuestro cuerpo. Con razón las religiones de todas las épocas y culturas han usa-do tanto este símbolo. Cuanusa-do Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para ser bautiza-do, se “teje” a todo aquello que lo pre-cedía. Al sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de Israel que había cruzado el río para llegar a su Tie-rra Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista, Cristo se tejió a la tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del Reino de Dios. Jesús se había convertido plena-mente en humano en las aguas del vien-tre de María y al participar del rito del Bautismo del arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con nuestra frágil y pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del pecado y recibimos la promesa de la gracia. Coronavirus and the Local Church
In light of substantial spikes in Covid-19 virus transmission, along with substantially increased critical hospital census numbers, the following changes to Diocese of Tucson protocols are in ef-fect as of January 8, 2021. They shall remain in effect for four weeks, until February 5th, with a review taking place early in the week of February 1st.Mass Celebrations and Baptisms
• Both Sunday and weekday indoor Masses or gatherings are suspended.
• In individual situations, and based upon local circum-stances and conditions, pastors may seek permission from the Bishop to celebrate some indoor Masses. • Masses may be celebrated outdoors in accord with
exist-ing protocols.
• Funerals and weddings may be celebrated indoors but are limited to a maximum of 25 persons; baptisms are limited to a maximum of ten persons. No gatherings before or following these celebrations are allowed on parish or church property.
• Pastors are strongly encouraged to provide pastoral care through Masses celebrated for the people via the inter-net as well as providing Holy Communion and the Sacra-ment of Penance outdoors.
Parish Offices
• During this same four-week period, parish offices must close to the public.
• Parish staff shall work from home with the exception of the priests assigned to the parish (or canonical Parish Administrator) and maintenance staff.
• A suspension of four weeks from indoor liturgies also allows us to stand in solidarity with those who are criti-cally ill, healthcare workers, the unemployed, those grieving the loss of loved ones, and all those whose lives have been far more substantially altered.
Those persons identified in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines as “high risk” are strongly encouraged to receive the Church’s ministry mediated through the inter-net while remaining at home. This caution is greatly less-ened after such persons have been able to receive a Covid vaccination.
Unlike the period of time early in the pandemic, when in-person worship was initially suspended, we now can see victory on the horizon. A period of four weeks should make a considerable difference in the availability of the Covid vaccine for those most at risk. Hopefully it also will help us to evaluate more accurately the anticipated post-Christmas spike in infections and resulting hospitalizations. Yours in Christ Edward J. Celebraciones de Misa y Bautismos
• Se suspenden las misas o reuniones interiores tanto los domin-gos como los días laborables.

• Las misas pueden celebrarse al aire libre de acuerdo con los protocolos existentes.
• Los funerales y bodas se pueden celebrar en el interior, pero están limitados a un máximo de 25 personas; los bautismos es-tán limitados a un máximo de diez personas. No se permiten reuniones antes o después de estas celebraciones en la parro-quia o propiedad de la iglesia.
• Se recomienda encarecidamente a los pastores que proporcio-nen atención pastoral a través de misas celebradas para la gen-te a través de Ingen-ternet, así como a proporcionar la Sagrada Co-munión y el Sacramento de la Penitencia al aire libre.
Oficinas Parroquiales
• Durante este mismo período de cuatro semanas, las oficinas parroquiales deben cerrar al público.
• El personal de la parroquia trabajará desde casa con la excep-ción de los sacerdotes asignados a la parroquia (o administrador parroquial canónico) y el personal de mantenimiento.
• Una suspensión de cuatro semanas de las liturgias en el interior también nos permite solidarizarnos con aquellos que están críti-camente enfermos, los trabajadores de la salud, los desemplea-dos, los que sufren la pérdida de sus seres queridos y todos aquellos cuyas vidas han sido mucho más sustancialmente alte-radas.
Se recomienda encarecidamente a aquellas personas identificadas en las pautas de los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades (CDC) como de "alto riesgo" que reciban el ministerio de la Iglesia mediado a través de Internet mientras permanecen en casa. Esta precaución se reduce en gran medida después de que dichas per-sonas hayan podido recibir una vacuna contra Covid.
A diferencia del período de tiempo al principio de la pandemia, cuando la adoración en persona se suspendió inicialmente, ahora podemos ver la victoria en el horizonte. Un período de cuatro se-manas debería marcar una diferencia considerable en la disponibi-lidad de la vacuna Covid para quienes corren mayor riesgo. Es de esperar que también nos ayude a evaluar con mayor precisión el aumento esperado de infecciones y las hospitalizaciones resultan-tes después de Navidad.

In December our volunteers prepared 27 dozen hard boiled eggs, 710 sandwiches, and 300 bags of cookies and chips, and St. Vincent de Paul vol-unteers donated 103 loaves of bread from Knead-ers Bakery. Thank you for your generosity!
Share-A-Lunch Ministry is again organizing volunteers to prepare sandwiches in their homes on next
week-end. The ministry leaders will provide all the supplies for

Baptism Preparation in English
The next baptism preparation session for parents will be online on Sunday, 17 January from 11:30 AM to 1:30

baptism are scheduled for Sundays, 10 January and 14
February, at 11:30 AM in the church. Attendance will be limited by the COVID-19 guidelines in effect at the time. Lent begins on February 17. The sacrament of Baptism is not cele-brated during Lent.

From the Diocesan Office of Religious Education… Arizona currently is experiencing the fastest spread of Covid-19 of any state in the nation. Due to the community spread, we are seeing an alarm-ing surge in cases and decreased availability of necessary healthcare resources.
Based on this information, it is necessary that Religious Education and Youth Ministry continue with remote learning. Although we had hoped to begin in-person classes in January, in-in-person classes are post-poned until next school year.
We are hoping that by May, Arizona will be in a better place and that Parishes may be able to host an end of year in-person event for children and families.
January packets will be distributed on 10 January. If you have questions about our program for this year, please contact Becki Jenkins (bjenkins@stcyril.com or 520 -795-1633 x 104).

Arizona actualmente está experimentando la propagación más rápida de Covid-19 de cualquier estado de la nación. Debido al aumento en la comunidad, estamos viendo un au-mento alarmante de casos y una menor disponibilidad de los recursos de atención médica necesarios.

Plenary Indulgences
A plenary indulgence remits all temporal punish-ment due to sin and must be accompanied by full detachment from sin. It is defined in the Code of Canon Law (can. 992) and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1471):“An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under cer-tain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.”
A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day and can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.
The gaining of indulgences requires prescribed conditions and the performance of prescribed works.
Conditions for the Plenary Indulgence
To gain indulgences, it is necessary to be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. It is granted under the three usual conditions:
• Sacramental Confession (which, under the usual condi-tions, means going to Confession within 20 days before or within 20 days after the day the plenary indulgence is sought);
• also, the reception of the Holy Eucharist on the day the plenary indulgence is sought;
• and prayer for the Pope’s needs and intentions on the day the plenary indulgence is sought (which, under the usual conditions is understood to be an Our Father and Hail Mary; or, one may also recite the Creed).
Also required is a spirit that is sincerely and willfully de-tached from any sin, mortal and venial.

Indulgencias Plenarias
Una indulgencia plenaria remite todo castigo tempo-ral debido al pecado y debe ir acompañada de un desapego total del pecado. Está definido en el Códi-go de Derecho Canónico (can. 992) y en el Catecis-mo de la Iglesia Católica (n. 1471):
“Una indulgencia es una remisión ante Dios del castigo temporal debido a pecados cuya culpa ya ha sido perdonada, que el cristiano fiel que está debidamente dispuesto gana bajo ciertas condicio-nes prescritas mediante la acción de la Iglesia que, como ministro de la redención, dispensa y aplica con autoridad el tesoro de las satisfacciones de Cristo y los santos.”
Una indulgencia plenaria se puede obtener solo una vez al día y siempre se puede aplicar a uno mismo o a las almas de los difuntos, pero no se puede aplicar a otras personas que viven en la tierra.
La obtención de indulgencias requiere condiciones prescritas y la realización de trabajos prescritos.
Condiciones para la Indulgencia Plenaria

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys
(1620–1700) Feast Day: January 12 Growing up in Troyes, France, Marguerite formed a special relationship with Our Lady. She was turned away by two religious communities, but met the founder of Montreal, Canada, when he returned to France to visit his sister. He invited Marguerite to open a school in the New World; she went, despite misgivings, after praying to Mary. From that first school in an abandoned stable, her ministry grew to include teachingwomen crafts and founding the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame. She managed to keep her sisters unclois-tered, despite opposition from the bishop, and served as superior for many years. When Pope John Paul II canon-ized her in 1982, she became Canada’s first woman saint.

Durante casi cuarenta años, la Semana Nacional de la Migración (NMW) se ha celebrado la semana posterior a la Epifanía de enero. Una de las principales razones para la selección de estas fechas se debió a la fecha del mensaje del Día de la Migración del Papa, que se celebró a mediados de enero.
En 2019, el Papa Francisco anunció que, en lo sucesivo, la Jornada Mundial del Mi-grante y del Refugiado se celebraría el últi-mo domingo de septiembre. Para mantener la costumbre de alinear NMW con el Día Mundial de los Migrantes y Refugiados, los obispos católicos de los Estados Unidos decidieron recientemente trasladar la Semana Nacional de la Migración a la última semana de septiembre. Da-do que ya hemos celebraDa-do NMW 2020 en enero de este año, la próxima Semana Nacional de la Migración que celebraremos será del 20 al 26 de septiembre de 2021, con la Jornada Mundial de los Migrantes y Refugiados del Vaticano el domingo 26.

National Migration Week 2021 Is Moving! 20 – 26 September 2021
For nearly forty years, National Migration Week (NMW) has been celebrated the week after the Epiphany in January. One of the primary reasons for the selection of these dates was due to the timing of the Pope’s Migration Day message, which was celebrated in mid-January.
In 2019, Pope Francis announced that that the World Day of Migrants and Ref-ugees would henceforth be celebrated on the last Sunday of September. To maintain the custom of aligning NMW
with the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, the Catholic Bishops of the United States recently decided to move Na-tional Migration Week to the last week in September. Given that we have already celebrated NMW 2020 in January of this year, the next National Migration Week that we will celebrate will be 20 – 26 September 2021, with the Vatican’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees taking place on Sunday the 26th.
More information about the celebration, next year’s Nation-al Migration theme, and resources will be made available on the USCCB Justice for Immigrants website in the spring of 2021. For any questions related to National Migration Week, please send an email to MigrationWeek@usccb.org.
