Foreword
Football is the worldʼs most popular sport. It crosses the
boundaries that are language, culture and religion. Indeed football
can be a wonderful way to communicate and open up dialogue
when sometimes there is dispute or conflict. It can provide
wonderful health benefits in these days where in some countries
obesity is a serious problem. Above all, it can provide huge
enjoyment to players and to spectators of the beautiful game. "

At the youth level there are many coaches, teachers and parents
who do a wonderful job, giving up valuable time and energy to
help young players progress and without financial remuneration.
We who are professionals in the game of football have a duty to
help at grassroots level by acknowledging the huge importance of
youth development. The young are the lifeblood for the future. "

to be ambassadors for the game, to spread the wonderful benefits
the game can offer both on and off the playing field. In this regard

Charlie Cooke "
"
Charlie Cooke is the co-founder of Coerver Coaching and
Director of North, Central and South America.
As a player, Charlie starred for Aberdeen FC and Dundee FC in
Scotlandʼs First Division before joining Chelsea FC of the
English First Division. At Chelsea he won the English FA Cup
and the European Cup Winners Cup. He represented Scotland
in international matches 16 times and was selected to The
World All Star Team by FIFA.
Charlie completed his career as a player with the Los Angeles
Aztecs of the North American Soccer League and also coached
in the professional league.
Author Profiles
Alfred Galustian
Alfred is the co-founder and International Director of Coerver
Coaching, and has been largely responsible for the expansion
of the program globally.
He started his soccer career as a player with Wimbledon.
Alfred is a specialist technical coaches instructor and has
worked as a Coaches Instructor at the French, English,
Japanese and Australian Football Federations, and with Top
Clubs Bayern Munich (Germany), Real Madrid (Spain),
Olympique Marseille (France), Newcastle United and Arsenal
(England).
He is currently the Specialist Skills Coaches Advisor to the
Premier League.
Together with Charlie, he has authored several books, articles
and videos on Coerver Coaching and Skill Development.

Coaching History
In the late 1970s, Dutch European
Championship winning coach Wiel
Coerver
®led a revolution in soccer
coaching. He was dissatisfied with the
lack of individual skills and emphasis on
defensive play in the professional game;
an emphasis that many thought, was
stifling the more exciting, attacking style of
play necessary to score goals and attract
fans. "
Up to that point, little attention had been given to
individual skill development, because no one knew
quite how to teach these skills. It was also, then,
widely assumed that the great players of the game
were innately gifted far beyond the capabilities of the
average player. "

Coerver's early focus was on teaching ball mastery
and 1 v 1 skills by encouraging players to emulate the
“moves” of soccerʼs all-time greats, such as Sir
Stanley Matthews, Cryuff, Beckenbauer and Pele."
In 1984, inspired by Wiel Coerverʼs

The 1v1 Moves Pyramid shows our three basic categories of moves: changes of direction, stops

Changes of direction are used to shield the ball and to turn into space.

Coerver Coaching is a Step-by-Step Teaching Method.
Using our Curriculum “Pyramid of Player Development” we take each topic and divide the drills and
games into 3 categories:

Our “Skills Bridge” Works as follows:

Many of our small-sided games feature 4 or 6 mini Goals. The reason for this is that we believe the
more options players have, the more creative their decision-making becomes."
· Shooting Zones
We use Shooting Zones to develop field awareness defensively and offensively and force attackers
to be positive and use their 1v1 and combination skills to penetrate to shoot. "
· Limited Touches
We focus a lot on two-touch soccer to improve our players speed of play. Through our history we
have used Great Stars and Teams as our Models; players such a Xavi and his team mates at
Barcelona can pass creatively and accurately within fractions of seconds; thatʼs our goal."
· One Touch Finishing
We encourage this skill from the earliest age. Space and time in the penalty area becomes more
and more restricted the older players get and the higher the level of their play. We try to develop
this mental and physical skill as early as possible."
· Passes to score (Killer Pass)
The whole Coerver Curriculum is designed to produce game effective players, i.e: players able to
play with awareness and skill. The “Killer pass”, one that creates a goal chance, is a vital attacking

SET UP."
Two adjoining 8 x 5 yd. grids with 4 yard zones at each end." Two teams on the end lines of the 4 yd boxes."
A ball to each team."
ACTION."
The player with the ball pushes the ball to the mid line of the zone and passes to the opposite receiver and joins the Receiverʼs line.."
The Receiver takes the ball one touch into the adjacent 4 yard box with the inside of his right foot, passes 1 touch to the mid line with the inside of the foot then passes one touch with the inside to the next opponent and joins the end of the opponents line."
Take first touch across the grid with the inside & pass with inside of foot."
VARIATION 1."
Teams change lanes."
Now Take with Inside of Left foot and pass with inside of left."
VARIATION 2."
1. Back to original lanes."
Take with outside of right foot, pass with inside of Right foot to middle and to opponent, join opposite team." 2. Change lanes."
