Putney is heavily weighted towards:
• The higher social profile groups, with 72% being ABC1 (versus 51% GB average).
• The highest spending age group, with 51% of catchment aged between 20-44 years (versus 15% GB average).
Transport
Putney is graded by Transport for London in the top category (6) for accessibility by public transport. The town has:
• Putney Mainline Station (Waterloo 15 minutes, Clapham Junction 5 minutes).
• East Putney and Putney Bridge tube stations (both District Line).
• 15 bus services which connect Putney with Central London,Greater London and beyond.
• Easy road access to both the nearby A3 and A4, and the A205 South Circular.
• An increasingly used river taxi service for commuters and leisure users.
Environment
Putney provided an easy river crossing pre-dating Roman times, with the first bridge completed in 1729.
• Famous for the Putney Debates held in 1647 by Cromwell’s army. Putney has an historic core, with many attractive period buildings along the high street being Georgian or Victorian.
• Has an unusually good selection of cafés, restaurants, bars and pubs, located throughout the town and along the river, making this a great place to relax and entertain for office workers, visitors and residents.

Putney town centre consists of approximately 330 shops,
comprising over 300,000sq ft of retail floor space.
• Identified as a “Major Centre” in The London Plan, it is the highest ranked centre in the Borough of Wandsworth, in terms of its multiple retailers, followed by Clapham Junction, Tooting, Wandsworth, Balham and Battersea.
• The town is anchored by the Exchange Shopping Centre, which houses 50 shops, including Waitrose, Gap, Argos, Waterstones, Next, Monsoon, Fat Face, River Island and La Senza. The Exchange has a 265 space car park and generates footfall of over 120,000 shoppers per week.

The main area of retailing is along the High Street, whichincludes Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Boots, Benetton, Jigsaw, HMV, WH Smith, Topshop and TK Maxx.

In addition, a large number of independent local retailers occupy many of the side streets, in particular, Lacy Road, LowerRichmond Road, Upper Richmond Road and Putney Bridge Road.

The town centre has two main supermarkets, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, as well as a foodhall in M&S and convenience outlets run by Tesco and Somerfield.•
In the last few years, a number of new retailers have come to the town, with a general upmarket shift. These include Laura Ashley, Fat Face, JoJo Maman Bébé, Office, River Island, Maplin, Topshop, Top Man, TK Maxx and Mountain Warehouse.•
The vacancy rates for the town are consistently low.•
The catchment spends £14,000 per household p.a. on all goods, of which £6,500 are on comparison goods (31% more than the GB average).•
On catering, the catchment spends 66% more than the GB average.•
Putney also significantly draws on the surrounding affluent neighbouring areas of Barnes, Mortlake, East Sheen, Fulham and Southfields, each of which has weaker retail offers.•
The town centre retailing area is surrounded on three sides by residential properties, meaning that a high proportion of customers visit the shops by foot and on a regular basis. In addition, the large number of office workers in Putney generate significant spend on weekdays.•
Funds are available to independent businesses from Wandsworth Council to help improve the town via the Town CentreImprovement Scheme (loans/grants).

Putney has a vibrant and growing leisure scene, with an ever
increasing number of cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars, many
taking advantage of the town’s position on the Thames.
• A recent example is the new Putney Wharf development, an award winning mixed use development by the river, comprising over 250 apartments, together with a pub, bar and restaurants such as Carluccio’s and The Boathouse.
• At the northern part of the high street, adjacent to Church Square, is an Odeon multiplex cinema.
• The town centre also boasts a number of health & fitness clubs and children’s play centres, such as Gymboree Play and Music, and Eddie Catz, which has licensed refreshments, party function room and play/entertainment areas.
• The Half Moon pub provides one of South West London’s best known and loved live music venues, with live bands playing throughout the week.
• Cultural activities also form a part of Putney life – the famous Putney Debates are commemorated at St Mary’s Church (by Putney Bridge) with a permanent exhibition, marking the
importance of Cromwell’s 1647 debates in shaping the future road to democracy in Britain.
• The Putney Sculpture Trail is a new and unique riverside trail of just over a mile, featuring nine near lifesize figurative sculptures created by veteran local and nationally recognisedscuptor, Alan Thornhill.
• Putney Bridge provides the starting line of the annual Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race, watched by circa 250,000 people each year. In addition, a three day annual Putney Music Festival is held over the Boat Race weekend to increase the fun surrounding the event, and help capitalise on the business opportunity. Established for over 10 years, the festival involves around 20 venues each year.
