Navantia is the heir to a long-standing

tradition in military shipbuilding

thanks to its historical background

with the Spanish Navy arsenals

Navantia’s history dates back to 1730, with the creation of the Ferrol, Cartagena and San Fernando historical military arsenals, dedicated to the construction and repair of Spanish Navy ships. In 1908, these shipyards became part of the Naval Shipbuilding Society (popularly known as “La Naval”), which also included civil shipyards such as the ones located at Matagorda and Sestao that would later become part of AESA. At the end of the Spanish Civil War, the State took control over the military arsenals and created Bazán in 1947, in order to apply foreign technologies to the military shipbuilding process. It was then when the company, which has since then strived to improve and adapt to its clients’ requirements, started to develop its own naval projects.

Navantia, heir to a long-standing tradition

Navantia, the Spanish public shipbuilding company, was born in 2005 as a result of Izar being divided into two companies, the aim being to improve their business efficiency.

The same docks and slipways which today bring technologically advanced ships to life (F-100 frigates and S-80 submarines) were witnesses to historical events such as the creation of the “Isaac Peral” submarine, the first electrically powered submarine in the world, and the construction of the first Spanish ship to be equipped with a gas-turbine propulsion system, the aircraft carrier “Príncipe de Asturias”.

As for more recent history, there are numerous examples highlighting the dynamism of our company.

Navantia and the Spanish Navy, in partnership for more than 250 years

Navantia and the Spanish Navy work together from the preliminary feasibility phase of the project up to final implementation, and also embark on the modernizations and overhauls required to provide support throughout the vessel’s life cycle

Navantia develops products of state-of-the-art technology and great added value that provide to the Spanish Navy a high level of operational capacity.

Navantia repairs all kinds of civil or military ships

in its shipyards located in strategic shipping lanes

on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea

Navantia has three ship repair centers: • Fene-Ferrol (Northwest Atlantic coast) • Cartagena (Mediterranean coast) • Cádiz-San Fernando (Strait of Gibraltar)

The privileged climate conditions of these three areas enable the centers to operate 365 days a year. Besides, they are located in cities equipped with all the necessary infrastructures and facilities to make the stopover satisfactory for crews while repair work is being carried out.

Our centers offer spacious and modern facilities, in which some 200 merchant and naval ships of every class are repaired each year, from gas carriers down to yachts and from aircraft carriers down to patrol boats. We count on 12 drydocks and 1 floating drydock, cranes with a lifting capacity of more than 200 tones, a synchrolift and approximately 7 kilometers of wharf for docking, which enable us to simultaneously repair up to 12 ships.

Navantia Shiprepairs is qualified to carry out work that is technically extremely complex and sophisticated, such as the repair of LNG carriers (an area in which the company has specialized since 1992), the lengthening of ships, modernization programs such as CAVIMAR (which improves the quality of life at sea aboard the Spanish Navy’s ships), refits, conversions and many other projects.

Over and above this, Navantia Shiprepairs has a workforce of 600 highly qualified personnel and counts on the support of a first-rate auxiliary industry that enables the company to undertake any project with punctuality and quality guarantees.

Our centers are backed by international certification standards regarding quality, safety and environmental compliance:
