Special Edition April 2010

The New York State FCCLA Conference was held March 25-27 at

the Owego Treadway Inn. This special edition Ultimate E-News

will cover the highlights of the meeting.

Distinguished Service Award

Elizabeth Kuhl

Liz Kuhl has been chosen as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for her hard work and dedication to FHA/FCCLA throughout her life. Over her 33 years of advising, Liz has supervised numerous district and state officers, served as a district advisor, been advisor-to-advisor trainer, as well as the district rep advisor-to-advisor trainer at Summer Leadership. No job is ever too much for Liz, when it comes to FCCLA.

Liz’s distinguished service reaches deep into her community at Beaver River Central. Liz is well know for her commitment to community service activities through her FCCLA chapter. Collecting can goods for the local food pantry, raising money for local fire and accident victims, fundraising for Relay for Life and Feed the Children programs are just a few of the ways she helps FCCLA support her community. With Liz’s guidance, many of her students have competed very successfully in STAR events competitions over the years. Liz fully deserves the Distinguished Service Award for 2010.

It is with great pleasure to introduce Jamie Land. Jamie would go to various local and district meetings tagging along with mom when she was an elementary school student. She kept

asking mom, “When can I become a member? In 7th grade she became a member and started competing in STAR events. For four years she competed in STAR Events at the local, district, state and national meetings.

Jamie served on many committees at the local and district level and held many offices such as president, secretary, and treasurer. She became a state officer to serve on the executive board in NYS at secretary. After graduating from high school, Jamie joined the alumni of FCCLA. Jamie attended Medaille College in Buffalo training to becomes a veterinarian assistant. She went back for her bachelors to becomes the first student to graduate in the 4 year program in 3 ½ years. During this time she helped guide many members at the local and district levels with their STAR Events and personal growth and continues to do so.

Still wanted to do more, she became the assistant trainer for the Junior Leaders and the following year the trainer. The leadership skills, public speaking, character development, critical thinking, communication and many roles that Jamie has held through FHA/FCCLA have definitely served her well to develop skills for her life no matter what she does.

School Administrator Award

Rosanne Messina

Marlboro High School Principal, Rosanne Messina was introduced to FCCLA in 2005 when she came to Marlboro Central High School as an administrative intern. Little did she know that our chapter would e in her office constantly asking for help. During her time as Assistant Principal from 2006 thru 2008 and as Principal from 2008 to present, Mrs. Messina has been especially helpful to MCHS FCCLA. She says YES most of the time to our chapter’s activities. She goes to bat for our members who are trying to accomplish projects and sings our praises to whomever will listen. MCHS FCCLA is very proud of Mrs. Messina for receiving the Administrator of the Year Award.

Honorary Membership Award

Larry Driscoll has been a quiet supporter of FCCLA for many years. He has always been a proponent of students. In his career as a school business official, principals and other staff learned if you could prove students could benefit, he would work hard to find a few extra dollars to support a project.

He first became involved with FCCLA when he supported his wife, an advisor, as she attended various state/national meetings and chapter events. His involvement took on a more personal role as he attended state meetings and even a national meeting in California when is daughter was a state officers. It did not take long for him to see the positive benefits, opportunities and leadership growth that FCCLA offered. He saw first hand how the skills and training changed students.

His most recent involvement has been as a member , and now treasurer, of the NYS Foundation. He is working to provide new funding for the foundation so scholarships and leadership opportunities will continue for this life changing student lead organization. We are pleased to present this year’s honorary membership to Larry Driscoll.

STAR Event Service Awards

Ellen Hamilton

Ellen Hamilton taught for 31 years, retiring from Randolph Central School. During this time she was an FHA Advisor having state officers, junior leaders, and STAR Event competitors. After retiring she was still committed to FHA/FCCLA and has worked at the state meetings for the past 15 years as a coordinator for various events. She would make sure the members had the folders, posters, etc. needed for competition. After that part of the day, Ellen would help with the scoring to check for accuracy and help out wherever she could.

Ellen still enjoys working with the student members and advisors. She returns every year to listen to the new projects the students have developed and are presenting. It was not enough to be helping at the local, district and state; she has attended national leadership conventions to evaluate STAR Events. We look forward to many more years of Ellen Hamilton’s continued support in Star Events!

Gloria Tanderjean was a retired FACS teacher who stayed connected to FCCLA, and remained very involved until her death in 2008. Gloria had an FHA chapter from the time she started teaching in 1960 at Charles Evans Hughes HS through her retirement from Park West High School in New York city. She was part of the Careers through Culinary Arts Program where she helped many students earn thousands of dollars of scholarships so that they would be able to afford to go to culinary colleges. She advised State officers from New York City and had culinary arts students participate in STAR events at the state and national levels.

She was involved with FCCLA as the Culinary Arts Event Coordinator for NYS for many years. Gloria also assisted with the Culinary Arts STAR event on the national level making it a point to attend and help evaluate each and every year even though she was not bringing any students. While we wish we could give this award to Gloria in person, we know that she is looking down on us smiling, and wishing she could be here to accept it.

Golden Advisor Award

Cathy Schulz

This year’s Golden Advisor Award recipient is still active and dedicated to FHA/FCCLA. Even after retirement, Cathy Schultz’s commitment to students continues as she has been an event coordinator for STAR Events and now shadowing the STAR Event Manager. She was the State Officer Trainer in 2004-05. A quiet leader herself, Cathy had the ability to develop leadership qualities in her students and still does with the students she meets while working on STAR Events.

(7)

For her continued commitment to young people and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, we are pleased to present the Golden Advisor Award to Cathy Schulz.
