Urbanization is progressing and traffic

density is growing. Drivers feel like they

are moving from one bottleneck to another.

Traffic in the 21

st

century is going to be

a challenge for society and road users.

Digital information and communication

technology in vehicles is going to be all

the more important. Only those who are

connected and use supporting telematics

services when on the move will have

economic benefit, save resources, be

punctual and travel relaxed. ZF and Intel

have created a telematics platform that will

(3)

“We must understand traffic as a complete system.

It is no longer sufficient to just concentrate on partial

solutions. With Openmatics, we have created a basis

that offers a chance to all telematics providers to

come out of their detached island existence.”

Openmatics

One platform, several opportunities

Whether bus, van, truck or commercial vehicle, fleet operators can

profit from modern telematics services – digital information communication

to and from moving vehicles. The problem: every application, be it with

reference to environmental zones, tolls or fuel consumption, is currently an

isolated solution. Openmatics will change this.

Thomas Rösch, Managing Director, Openmatics s.r.o

The telematics market is fragmented. Component and vehicle manufacturers offer their own systems. The partially specific isolated solutions do not follow any uniform technical standard. A disadvantage for the fleet operators require seperate telematics systems for every application and if the operator has a mixed fleet, he/she has to repeatedly invest in hardware and software for every vehicle brand that has a specific telematics system.

In the future, one telematics platform will cover all: Openmatics. With Openmatics, ZF and Intel establish a new telematics standard in the market, which allows combining a range of varied applications on one platform. Openmatics can exchange data with all the relevant vehicle systems, which makes it suitable for fleet

management as well as for passenger information, vehicle diagnosis, multimedia applications, etc. The openness of the platform is innovative as well. It is independent of

vehicle manufacture, thus suitable for third-party suppliers such as vehicle and component manufacturers or other application developers can offer their telematics services in the form of Apps to Openmatics.

A few pre-requisites: the quality must be of the highest. Every App is checked and certified before its release.

A product of strategic partnership

ZF and Intel – two global players – have jointly developed and implemented Openmatics. In addition to the chip technology, Intel also brings its expertise in the architecture of IT and communication solutions. ZF contributes its know-how as a specialist in drive trains and component networking in vehicles.

The concept of the system

As simple as possible

All that one will need in the future to cover multiple telematic support, is

an onboard unit and an internet connection. Openmatics makes it easy

for fleet and vehicle operators to use telematics to meet their demands.

The components of the Openmatics system

Onboard unit in the vehicle Data recording and transfer

Openmatics provides onboard units for the vehicles

of the fleet operator for the duration of the contract. Openmatics charges a monthly fee for the services provided. In addition to the basic contract, additional services (Apps) can be purchased / subscribed to in the App-Shop. The system can thus be upgraded with almost no restrictions.

Third-Party Apps by vehicle and component manufacturers, fleet operators, etc.

Web portal

Data access and visualization via the Internet on a computer, tablet or smartphone

The Openmatics system is easy: an onboard unit in the vehicle records the data for all the desired telematics applications. Outsourced servers take over the data conversion and storage. The users access the data via a web portal, for instance on the computer, tablet PC or via a smartphone. The different telematics services are offered as modular software applications i.e. Apps, so that the fleet and/or vehicle operators can freely select and combine them as desired. The result: customized telematics solutions.

A flexible telematics solution

Users can use Openmatics to update and upgrade their individual set of functions using the selected basic Apps – by adding additional Apps or deleting them if they are no longer necessary. Also, all additional Apps will still be available for future use. The decision for Openmatics is a decision for a safe future.

An economic telematics solution

Simplicity is also the economic side of Openmatics, too. The users pay for only those telematics functions they use – nothing more and nothing less. Moreover, the investment and installation costs are modest. This is because the users do not have to buy and operate the technology themselves, just enjoy using the device, transferring the data, saving the data and the web portal managed services. Monthly charges are invoiced for the system management, basic Apps and any additional Apps. The operability of the system is ensured for the entire contract duration.

The onboard unit

All-encompassing as regards to data traffic

The Openmatics onboard unit ensures smooth data traffic. The compact,

powerful hardware can be easily integrated into every vehicle with intelligent

chip technology – the Intel® Atom

TM

processor.

Depending on the user requirements, the onboard unit is available with different performance capabilities. A Linux based operating system is used. As an all-encompassing onboard unit, it understands varied communication logs and mediates between different systems. It has enough interfaces for collecting the relevant vehicle data for present and future telematics applications.

The onboard unit can also be use to transfer data to and from the vehicle. Thus, service and position data can be sent on the one hand and changes in the route and directions can be received on the other hand, or current infotainment programs can also be recorded for bus passengers. These are three examples of possible data exchanges that help vehicle and fleet operators optimize life cycle costs and increase the load factor or the passenger comfort.

Data is transferred in an encrypted manner via GSM (2G), UMTS (3G) or WLAN (WiFi) either immediately or at a desired time. The latter proves to be economical during international trips or in the case of larger data volumes. Data transfer resumes once the vehicle is in range of the domestic network or back in the depot.

Display in the vehicle

If information is to be displayed in the vehicle, it can be done using the interactive Openmatics display. This is just one example of how the platform can be upgraded using external devices.

“Instead of several individual solutions, Openmatics

combines several functions into a single, highly

developed communication system. In addition to its

hardware and software expertise, Intel also brings

its experience in the field of standardizing open

IT solutions.”

Business Development Manager IntelOliver Roos,

The onboard unit has interfaces such as CAN, USB or Ethernet. It communicates via GSM (2G), UMTS (3G) or WLAN (WiFi). The power supply is suitable for the connection in the car (12 Volt) and in commercial vehicles (24 Volt).

“Telematics becomes simple and transparent

via the Openmatics web portal. Every user

configures his/her telematics system and

works with the software applications they

think are useful without needing to consider

the manufacturer and underlying technology.”

Prof. Dr. Eng. Heinz-Leo Dudek, Head of Department, Industrial Engineering and Management Technical Management (ET/IT) DHBW Ravensburg, Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University)

The web portal

Data access via Internet

Users can simply connect to the Internet on a computer or via a smartphone to

communicate with the onboard unit. In the Openmatics web portal, users can

access the collected telematics data, visualize evaluations and manage Apps.

The Openmatics web portal is operated using central servers. This means that the data is received, evaluated and archived externally by an independent service provider. The advantages for Openmatics users: save investments in hardware in the vehicle, in the communication technology and in the IT infrastructure. In addition, data security, data availability and back-up efficiency increase. Fleet operators can thus concentrate on their actual work, free from the technology in the background: the most economical, safe, reliable and environmentally friendly way to operate their vehicles.

In order to access the telematics data or its Apps, authorized users connect to a web-enabled end device of their choice via the standard browser in the web portal. Additional software is not necessary. To work with Openmatics on a daily basis, they can design their

individual dashboard in the portal and freely put together their desired telematics functions. If a user has multiple fleets, can each have a separate dashboard design. The compatibility with all the current fleet management systems is ensured. New telematics services can be integrated in the dashboard at all times using the App-Shop in the portal.

Driveline Consultancy

Driveline Consultancy helps save fuel. Different vehicle configurations are calculated for public service buses on the basis of route profiles or SORT cycles. The fuel consumption is subsequently compared.

ZF-EcoLife Transmission Diagnostics

The diagnostic App follows the operation of the ZF-EcoLife Transmission and simplifies its maintenance. Statistics are prepared for idle operations, load classes, speed profiles, route profiles, etc.

Area Monitoring

Fleet operators keep their vehicles in view with Area Monitoring. As soon as they drive into a defined area or leave it, the operator receives a message via SMS, email or via the web portal.

“Transportation companies operate in a liberalized

market. The optimization of the life cycle cost is

thus gaining increasing importance. Costs can be

saved systematically with the help of telematics

services.”

The App-Shop

Telematics services for downloading

Telematics services can be purchased independent of the manufacturer in

the Openmatics App-Shop. Apps by Openmatics and so-called Third-Party

Apps of other providers are available.

The telematics services offered in the shop are different software applications, which, for instance, help fleet operators reduce fuel consumption and operating costs. They can be used to initiate better time management or increase safety. Additional turnover can be generated by means of position-dependent advertising in busses and vehicle availability can be increased by means of predictive maintenance. The sky is the limit for the ideas of the application developer.

The Openmatics App-Shop informs about all the available Apps in a brief description and preview. The users can browse and search for specific telematics applications and compile their individual App portfolio as required by downloading. Depending on the type, the Apps are either free of charge, paid for once or monthly. In addition, an App ranking gives details about the bestseller.

The App-Shop

A market place for good ideas

Openmatics is a platform open to good ideas. Whether component

manufacturers, vehicle manufacturers, insurance companies or publishing

houses – everyone can become a third-party provider, develop Apps and display

them in the shop – even the users themselves if they have telematics ideas for

their fleets or other fleets.

The App development

The third-party Apps are developed exclusively using a provided software development kit (SDK). It is thus ensured that all the Apps have the optimum structure for their use in Openmatics. Every App comprises four functional areas: the App uses Boxlet to subscribe data from the onboard unit, and the worklet organizes the transfer, processing and saving of data on the application server. In Portlet and/or Displet of the App, the data about the web browser used by the user or about a display is finally indicated in the vehicle.

The App quality

All the Apps are checked and certified by Openmatics or by an external independent authority. The technical certification ensures that the Apps of different providers do not interfere with each other and function optimally in Openmatics. Among other things, careful handling of

the App with resources such as memory or CPU consumption, its behavior under stress or in case of interferences, the robustness of the App as well as compliance with the process interfaces are tested. The objective is that Openmatics users can rely on the high quality standard of the software applications irrespective of the provider.

The App sale

If a third-party App is released for Openmatics, its developer decides whether it can be used only for the developer-specific applications or whether it should be generally available in the shop. The developer is also responsible for its pricing. From the turnover, 70 % goes to the developer, Openmatics retains 30 % for the App testing and certification, distribution, material requirement, data storage and marketing.

“With Openmatics, the door is wide open so that

developers can let their imagination run wild.

It also makes sense from the economic viewpoint to

develop and offer the necessary telematics services

for niche areas as well.”

Dr. Marc Gerlach, Managing Director,

Openmatics

Safe for everyone

Openmatics is an open telematics platform. Nevertheless, optimum data

protection and safety is ensured in all the system areas – thanks to the

integrated safety measures.

Partially sensitive data circulates between the onboard unit in the vehicle and the computer of the fleet and/or vehicle operator. The Openmatics platform secures against data breaches and data loss multiple times.

Safety aspect 1: data transfer

The onboard unit works with encrypted software and prohibits third-party access. Encrypted data is transferred to and from the vehicle.

Safety aspect 2: hosting

An independent service provider takes over the hosting. This increases the data security, data availability and back-up efficiency.

Safety aspect 3: user and rights management

The Openmatics web portal has a professional user and rights management. Only users authorized in advance have access to the data.

Safety aspect 4: quality checks

All the components of the Openmatics system are constantly subjected to quality checks and the Apps are thoroughly tested and certified before their release.

Independence of the platform

Openmatics is an independent company that uses external hosting. Hence, in case of data management there are no similarities with ZF. ZF competitors can also offer Apps for their customers on Openmatics without restrictions.
