The Award: The New Jersey Credit Union League’s Youth Involvement Board (YIB) sponsors a $1,000 scholarship award to be paid jointly to the winning student and the chosen accredited educational institution.

Bonus Award: ABCO FCU also offers additional $1,000 Scholarships. If an ABCO student member does not win the YIB Award, they can receive an ABCO Scholarship. The number of Scholarships is based on a stipend by the Board of Directors and donations to our Scholarship Fund.

Eligibility: The applicant must be a member in good standing of ABCO FCU and must be enrolled as a high school senior at the time of application. Scholarship funds must be used: (1) for tuition or textbooks; (2) only at an accredited educational institution (2 or 4 year college, university, or trade school).

Even though 2008 is officially over, there’s still plenty of time to open a 2008 Individual Retirement Account (IRA).

Why an IRA? Social Security is only intended to fill a fraction of what you’ll need to live on in your retirement years. Employer pension and 401(k) plans can also supplement your needs. In this economy, they may not be enough. A safe, secure IRA from ABCO can fill this need and can mean the difference between just “getting by” in retirement and living better.

Opening an IRA at your credit union is easy. You can set up automatic contributions from your paycheck, checking, or savings account. There are also many types of IRAs – Traditional and Roth. If you are over 50 you may also be eligible for catch-up contributions that can increase the amount you can save.

Interest earned on a Traditional IRA is tax-deferred until you begin making withdrawals from the account. And depending on your income, age and whether your employer offers a qualified retirement plan, contributions to your IRA may be tax deductible. Interest on a Roth IRA is taxable income. Ask your tax advisor which is the better option for you. Either way, saving today for a more comfortable tomorrow is always a good idea.
