Ph.D. Study Programs

Postgraduate Doctoral Studies, one of the priorities of CU, train students in independent research work and provide them with the appropriate qualifications in the given academic discipline. Those who successfully complete doctoral studies, usually taking three years and culminating in a doctoral examination and the public defense of doctoral (dissertation) thesis, obtain the academic title of Doctor (Ph.D. or Th.D. – in case of the theological studies).

Entry into doctoral programs is based on submission of certificate of graduation from master‘s studies and an entrance examination. More specific entry requirements are determined in accordance with the law by the Dean of the faculty.

Th.D. and Ph.D. Programs

The program is open to those who have graduated from a university or other institute of higher education with a master's degree in Protestant Theology (or a related discipline) and have given proof of their academic abilities. Applicants also need to have passed examinations in at least one of the languages important for European theology, other than their mother tongue (i.e. German, English, French, Italian, or Spanish).

Postgraduate doctoral studies consist of research activity leading towards a written dissertation, broadening and deepening the student's knowledge in the field of study, and mastering the techniques of academic work. The dissertation may be written in another language than Czech if there is an appropriate supervisor for that language. Students are also required to attend certain lectures, seminars or convocations, pass an examination in a second language, write various papers, reviews, or literature searches, pass three examinations in theological disciplines, and publish articles in specialist journals. The individual study plan is worked out together with the student's supervisor. Students who fulfill these requirements, and successfully submit and defend their dissertation, are awarded the title of

Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) or the title of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) by Charles University in Prague.

Postgraduate doctoral studies (PDS) at the Protestant Theological Faculty are offered in one of the following four fields:

 Biblical Studies (comprising Old and New Testament); Title Th.D.

 Systematic and Practical Theology (comprising dogmatics, ethics and all practical disciplines such as homiletics, catechetics, poimenics, ecumenics, etc.); Title Th.D.

 Historical Theology and Theology of Religions (comprising church history and history of dogma, and the comparative study of religions); Title Th.D.

 Philosophy (This programme will probably be offered in the academic year 2014-2015). Title Ph.D.

The normal length of postgraduate doctoral studies is four years. The maximum duration of the studies is nine years.

Application procedure

Potential applicants should first contact the appropriate Head of Department (see the web site) for the field in which they wish to write their dissertation, giving details of the topic for the dissertation and the language they will study in. The Department will then consider if there is an appropriate person available to act as a supervisor. If so, and if possible in consultation with the prospective supervisor, the applicant should submit a written application including the following:

 curriculum vitae including a detailed description of theological studies undertaken so far

 certified copy of Master's degree

 if possible recommendation from a previous academic supervisor or teacher

 an outline of the proposed dissertation project, including the topic, field, methods and aim of the research (2-3 pages)

Entrance examinations then usually take place in June, consisting of an interview with members of the Faculty's Inter-Disciplinary Council for Postgraduate Studies, in which the applicant defends the outline of his or her proposed dissertation project.

The Faculty provides postgraduate doctoral studies in biomedicine together with the 1st Faculty of Medicine, the 3rd Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, with Institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic oriented to biomedicine and the departmental research institutes of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic. An Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate

TEEME is an international doctoral programme in early modern studies funded by the European Union. English and American Literature

The Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures offers a doctoral programme in Anglo-American Literary Studies. Applicants may choose one of two modes of study:

Film Studies

The Film Studies Department currently offers a doctoral programme in Film Studies. Applicants may choose one of two options:

Film Studies at the Charles University is particularly interested in projects that assume innovative approaches to visual culture under totalitarianism and to societies in transition. Faculty specializations include:

Translation Studies

The Institute of Translation Studies offers a doctoral programme in Translation Studies. Applicants may choose one of two modes of study:

Single round, oral interview consisting of:

1) discussion on the dissertation proposal (subject and proposed methods) proving the applicant’s aptitude)

2) interview focused on the previous professional experience of the applicant

3) interview focused on subject-related literature (based on the applicant’s reading list)

In order to be able to read academic literature and study sources written in Czech, the students will be encouraged to improve their Czech language proficiency in the course of their studies.

Logic

The Institute of Logic offers a doctoral program in Logic. Applicants may choose one of two modes of study:

The Ph.D. Programme Board does not offer specific topics for Ph.D. candidates. Candidates can choose their topics freely. However, they should be aware of the primary fields of interests of the members of the Department of Logic, i.e. nonclassical logics, set theory, metamathematics, and interactions between these fields, including the historical aspects. Each Ph.D. student should have a qualified supervisor committed to close cooperation with the student. The supervisor—a member of the Ph.D. Programme Board or a researcher whom the Board finds

eligible—must be known already at the entrance exam. Topics outside the fields of interests of the members of the department should first be discussed with the chairman of the Board.

Mathematics and astronomy have been taught at Charles University since its foundation. At that time, these subjects were part of basic studies in the Faculty of Arts. In 1920, the Faculty of Science was created by separation from the Faculty of Arts in 1920. The Faculty of Science was divided in 1952, creating two new faculties - Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Faculty of Natural Sciences.

The Public and Social Policy (PSP) doctoral study programme prepares students

for basic and applied research and teaching in the academia as well as other types of activities requiring a high level of theoretical and methodological education in PSP. This programme is open to all master degree graduates or equivalent. The admission proceedings take the form of oral discussion over a written research proposal and a list of literature read within the field that have been submitted by the applicant. The goal of the discussion is to verify the applicant’s ability to comply with the requirements of the PSP doctoral programme. During discussion

Kinanthropology is a multidisciplinary scientific branch which deals with the complex effect of intentional and spontaneous movement activity on human personality development in bio-psycho-social context and conditions in the area of physical education and sport, physiotherapy, health physical education including their effective management.

Biomechanics

Biomechanics is an interdisciplinary scientific branch which deals with the mechanic structure and behaviour of living systems and their mutual mechanic

interactions based on detailed knowledge of anatomy and biochemistry. The main theoretical aims are formulations of generally valid rules both on a cellular and organic level, and on a human level. Biophysical and engineering methodological approach to task solution is supported by high-level knowledge of biological character. The research takes place at various distinctive levels, from micro-biomechanics (cellular level) to living macro systems (e.g. micro-biomechanics of humans). It is possible to come across biomechanics applications in a wide range of sciences and professional activities. Biomechanics in this form could be used not only in the area of basic research but also in a wide range of professional activities such as rehabilitation medicine, ergonomics, forensic and biomedicine engineering, sport etc. The training department of Charles University and Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic enable interdisciplinary education in doctoral studies in large scale and in the direction of a particular application. Students' study programme is highly individualized according to the requirements of the topic and specialization. The main focus during studies is set on students' individual research activity within the context of teamwork with the training department. Experimental facilities are provided by laboratories of particular training departments. Students are published in respected scientific magazines and active participation in congresses is considered a part of doctoral studies. Financial coverage of dissertation works is provided mainly by the grant policy of training departments.

Environmental Studies

The objective of the doctoral programme Environmental Studies is to provide the concept of sustainable development with support in the form of scientifically conducted research. An important aspect of the program is the interdisciplinary character of the defined research domains and the synergies among them. Although it is not the main goal of the study, we assume that the research outputs could be an important source of scientifically validated information for objective, relevant and qualified decision - making on environmental aspects of the economic and social development of the Czech Republic.

Civil Sector Studies

The aim of the program is to prepare highly qualified experts in civil society studies with knowledge of the relevant theoretical approaches, sound knowledge of research methodology and in-depth knowledge of the actual situation and practical problems in this area both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Alumni are able to take part in both basic and applied research in academic institutions and higher education institutions as well as become involved in the civil sector, public sphere (above all the state administration) and for-profit sector (corporate social responsibility, philanthropy and volunteering). The program is focused on

sociological or socio-economic analysis of the civic sector. The study plan of a PhD student includes planned publication activities, participation at conferences and exams from obligatory and obligatory-optional courses according to the accreditation documents. Upon completing the study with a doctoral exam and the defence of a PhD thesis, the student receives a Ph.D. title. The content and framework of the study is determined by the Program Council.

General Anthropology

The postgraduate doctoral study programme at FHS CU is organised in the full-time (3 years) and correspondence form of study. The programme allows studies focused on philosophical, historical, socio-cultural and socio-linguistic anthropology and human ethology. The task of the programme in general is grasping the theoretical basics and methods of this field and mastering the methodology of academic research. The curriculum of PhD students includes: - The studies are organised in two modules, whereas the first module is compulsory for all students in the programme, the second one is selected on the basis of the consultations with the supervisor. - Ph.D. seminar - a compulsory exam in a living language - the defence of the student’s dissertation. The concept of the study programme is determined by the department council.

Historical Sociology

The main topics of Historical Sociology are the questions of social change, modernization and its processes, civilization analysis, the formation of states and nations, and the formation of global systems and globalization. These are observed by means of large scale comparative analysis, which includes both broad territorial areas and time intervals. The field comprises a number of specific research areas, including the question of collective mentalities, habits and social memory. Historical sociology is a varied and internally differentiated discipline, which feeds into a number of specialized research directions and also supports research at an empirical level.

Applied Ethics

Study of Applied Ethics is about systematic training in critical reflection on own and others attitudes, in recognition of hidden assumptions and prejudices and overlooked ethical issues. We can say in other words that it is about deepening understanding approach – and in this case it is the area of humanities in a broad

sense. The aim of these studies is therefore an effort to create a space for systematic scientific work that focuses on the ethical dimension of various disciplines or professions. During the studies the adepts have to manage also the methods of scientific work and its professional presentation. Study plan for PhD. students includes: - so called comparative examination: one-term course completed by an examination in the fields, which the candidate has not studied, but which are necessary for doctoral studies; - compulsory part: two two-term courses completed by an examination; - optional part: a choice of six one-term courses completed by an examination; - other duties: an article in peer-reviewed publications, 2 reviews, 2 lectures, seminar for students, participation in two conferences.

Philosophie allemande et française

Ces études doctorales de troisième cycle sont ouvertes sous la forme interne et externe. La filière « philosophie allemande et française » s’oriente sur la philosophie classique allemande (à partir de Kant), la réaction à celle-ci, puis la phénoménologie (tout particulièrement celle de Husserl) ainsi que sa réception et son développement en France, de la philosophie de la vie et de l’existence, de l’herméneutique, de l’ontologie phénoménologique, jusqu’aux modifications actuelles de la phénoménologie et aux derniers développements de la philosophie française contemporaine. Elle permet l’étude de leurs conditions historiques et de leurs influences mutuelles dans l’espace intellectuel et culturel européen. Cette filière propose ainsi une préparation exigeante et professionnelle à la recherche et au déploiement des approches philosophiques actuelles qui se sont formées en Europe centrale et en France et qui influencent fondamentalement les débats sur la scène philosophique internationale. Le programme d’études du doctorant inclut des activités de publication, la participation à des colloques et le passage des examens dans les matières obligatoires et facultatives, au choix selon le manuel d’accréditation. Les études s’achèvent par l´examen doctoral d’État et par la soutenance de la thèse de doctorat, après lesquels l’étudiant obtiendra le titre Ph.D.

Sémiotique et philosophie de la communication

Caractéristique d’école doctorale: Etant constituée de façon interdisciplinaire, l’école doctorale Sémiotique et philosophie de communication propose une préparation scientifique exigeante qui conduit à la recherche philosophique et

sémiotique qualifiée de la communication, de son évolution et de ses relations avec d’autres milieux sociaux. L’enjeu principal de l’école doctorale est l’étude philosophique des stratégies, des présupposés et des effets de communication. Bien qu’elle est conçue de manière théorique, elle peut aussi bien disposer l’étudiant à pénétrer dans la pratique médiatique de masse, parce qu’elle aide à comprendre le rôle de la sémiosis dans le processus de médiation. Les étudiants sont menés à prolonger les lignes traditionnelles de recherche en sémiotique et philosophie de communication tchèque et mondiale, ainsi qu’à suivre les connaissances théoriques actuelles et à les développer de façon créative.

Deutsche und französische Philosophie

Dieses Doktorstudium wird für das Präsenz- und das Fernstudium ausgeschrieben. Es können sich alle bewerben, die sich für die Gebiete der klassischen und neueren deutschen Philosophie, der französischen Philosophie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, der deutschen und französischen Phänomenologie sowie der gegenwärtigen internationalen Rezeption dieser Philosophien interessieren und die Aufnahmebedingungen (erforderliche Unterlagen s. u.) erfüllen. Der Studienplan der Doktoranden in diesem Programm sieht folgende, während des zweijährigen Studiums (Mindeststudiendauer) zu erbringende Leistungen vor: Neben der Anfertigung von mindestens drei Hausarbeiten im Anschluss an die Pflichtveranstaltungen laut Akkreditation sind dies mindestens drei zu publizierende Artikel, die Teilnahme an mindestens drei Konferenzen sowie mindestens zwei thematisch im Zusammenhang der Doktorarbeit stehende Forschungsaufenthalte im Ausland. Der Studienabschluss besteht im Nachweis der genannten Leistungen, der Vorlage der Doktorarbeit sowie in ihrer Verteidigung im Rahmen einer Promotionsprüfung. Die mit Erfolg abschließenden Promovenden dürfen den Titel Ph.D. führen.

PhD in Economics Program (4 years)

The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute / CERGE-EI offers PhD program of doctoral studies in theoretical and applied economics. CERGE-EI PhD in Economics program is designed for outstanding students who desire rigorous graduate education in economics at a modern, international institution with the goal of pursuing an academic career or entering a high-level position in an international organization, central bank, government ministry or in the private sector.

The PhD program consists of two years of coursework followed by two years of supervised dissertation research. The working language of the institution is English. CERGE-EI encourages its students to conduct part of their dissertation research at partner institutions in Western Europe and North America, as well as to participate in collaborative research projects in other countries.

Eligibility for study

Students are expected to have good background in mathematics as well as sufficient English language skills to understand fully the study material. Undergraduate training in economics is welcomed, though not essential.
